Two army personnel, including major killed in Assam due to mistaken
identity:

Guwahati, Jan 7 : Mistaken identity cost the lives of two army
personnel, including a major, whom a joint police and CRPF team shot
dead taking them to be ULFA militants in upper Assam's Dibrugarh
district, Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) A Swargiary said
here today.

DIG (Eastern Range) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta had announced in the
morning yesterday in Jorhat two ULFA militants were shot dead in an
encounter and two 4-mm pistols were recovered from them.

However, the police later found the identity cards of Maj Mukesh
Chaurasia and sepoy Bikash Sensowa from their shirt pockets,
Swargiary said.

The two armymen in civvies were mistaken to be ULFA insurgents as
there was information that two ULFA ultras were in Tengakhat area for
extorting money there.

On being surrounded by the joint security team waiting at
Samokiagaon, Swargiary said, the defence personnel after walking out
of their vehicle parked at a distance fired at the joint team. The
securitymen also retaliated resulting in the death of the two.

As per the guidelines of the anti-insurgency Unified Command
Structure, the army, police and para-military forces should
coordinate their actions, but the slain personnel had not done it,
official sources said. So the joint team was not aware of them coming
to the area to look for militants and hence mistook them for ultras.

Senior police officials have rushed to the area to investigate into
the killing, the sources added.
