British Muslim officer takes action over removal from duties: report
(AFP)

7 November 2006

LONDON - A British Muslim police officer was removed from guarding
senior figures including Prime Minister Tony Blair amid security fears
because his young children attended a mosque associated with a suspected
extremist cleric, the Independent newspaper reported onTuesday.

Police constable Amjad Farooq, 39, a firearms officer, has now started
race and religious discrimination proceedings against London's
Metropolitan Police (Met), the paper said.

He was also told that his presence in the Diplomatic Protection Group
SO16 could upset the American secret service, it added.

The officer failed a counter-terrorism check which came through after he
spent six weeks with the group and the Met referred to the fact that his
two sons, aged 9 and 11, attended their local mosque while it was
associated with an imam suspected of links to an extremist Islamic
group, the paper said.

Farooq denies any links or inappropriate behaviour, the Independent added.

"We are very close to living in the days of Salem.

"If the head of counter-terrorism becomes a Witch-Finder General, then
any Muslim or Muslim-looking person or sympathiser best take cover," the
officer's solicitor, Lawrence Davies, told the paper.

The case comes amid continuing agonised debate over the role of Muslims
in British society following a series of suicide bombings on London's
public transport system in July 2005, which killed 52 travellers.

Last month, the head of the Met, Sir Ian Blair, ordered an inquiry after
constable Alexander Omar Basha, a Muslim, was excused from guard duty at
the Israeli embassy during the recent Israel-Lebanon conflict.
