Mind of a shooter
Trolley Square: Catalysts of violence complex

No easy answers explain what drives people to commit unfathomable acts of
violence.
Why, horrified onlookers wonder, would a youth at the cusp of adulthood
commit a crime so deadly, so senseless, so life-altering for so many? How
could Sulejman Talovic have been so calculating? So cold?
Explanations are complex, especially when the killer leaves so few clues.
Rarely is there a single event that prompts a perpetrator to shoot random
strangers, said Frank Farley, a psychologist at Temple University in
Philadelphia. It may take time to understand what prompted Talovic to open
fire at Trolley Square.
"It's always a recipe," he said, "and it involves a lot of ingredients."
In some cases, there may be psychological problems that may or not be
diagnosed. A history of problems at home - alcohol and/or violence - can
also contribute to pushing someone to the edge, he said.
Farley said any lingering problems may have intersected with some sort of
event on Monday night, such as a personal rejection or a humiliating
circumstance, to begin the shootings that left six people dead, including
Talovic.
Adding to the challenge in piecing together a reason for this crime is that
the shooter was 18, an age at which people are transitioning into adulthood.

"Legally, he is an adult," said Paul Ragan, a psychiatrist at Vanderbilt
University, in Nashville, Tenn. "But he is psychologically not an adult."
Talovic's status as a Bosnian refugee may have added another level of stress
in transitioning to adulthood. Language and cultural barriers can be
problematic. He may have experienced problems creating a social support
network.
"How well does a Bosnian national adolescent fit into Salt Lake City
culture?" Ragan wondered. "Did he get caught in some kind of gap where he
felt he didn't belong?"
While it may take time to unravel the circumstances behind the crime, the
way it was committed offers clues into the mind of the shooter, said Michael
King, a retired profiler who worked for the Ogden Police Department.
It is likely Talovic was looking to make a statement by picking a public
place and firing at seemingly random people.
"We don't need him to tell us he wants to shoot 'em up and make a name for
himself," King said.
The reason behind the shooting spree may be found through talking to family
and friends. Talovic may have dropped clues leading up to his actions, King
suggested.
The trench coat, which could have concealed his weapons initially, and the
extra ammunition speak to the planned nature of the attack. Having a second
weapon suggests Talovic may have had a contingency plan.
Farley added that Talovic probably knew how he would meet his end - in a
battle with law enforcement officers.
"Was this a suicide by police?" Farley asked.
Ragan added: "This is a person who wanted to go out in a blaze of gunfire.
He wanted to go out in a big way."

"Fair Use" criteria established in Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976.
The principle of "Fair Use" was established as law by Section 107 of The
Copyright Act of 1976. "Fair Use" legally eliminates the need to obtain
permission or pay royalties for the use of previously copyrighted materials
if the purposes of display include "criticism, comment, news reporting,
teaching, scholarship, and research." Section 107 establishes four criteria
for determining whether the use of a work in any particular case qualifies
as a "fair use". A work used does not necessarily have to satisfy all four
criteria to qualify as an instance of "fair use". Rather, "fair use" is
determined by the overall extent to which the cited work does or does not
substantially satisfy the criteria in their totality. If you wish to use
