Manila: A top level leader of a local terror group which is linked to the Al
Qaida network was arrested in the southern Philippines last Thursday, the
military said in a belated report on Sunday.
Abu Sayyaf leader Angging Yunos, also known as Abu Yunos, was arrested in
Isabela, Basilan on Thursday, said Superintendent Jaime Caringal, police
chief for western Mindanao.
"He is one of the most wanted Abu Sayyaf members," said Caringal, adding
that he was arrested from a stronghold of the militant group.
Yunos led the Abu Sayyaf Group in attacking, pillaging and burning Ipil town
in Zamboanga del Sur in April 1995, said Caringal.
The incident killed 52 people, and hundreds of establishments were burnt. It
was the first time that the group surfaced with the terror attack.
