The attention has come mostly due to the events of a very active Muslim Student Union who consistently create programs, bring speakers to campus, and utilize "Gorilla Theater" to denounce Israel's right to exist. These programs coupled with the administrations unwillingness to speak out directly against anti-Semitism as well as questionable strategic decisions from the university have created a very complex atmosphere. Over the past several months the local Jewish community as well as those across the country and around the world has increasingly become concerned and involved with what is happening at UCI. There are many different organizations that have a vested interested in what happens at UCI. And each of those organizations has a different style and strategy for dealing with the atmosphere on Campus. This has, at times, created a unique and challenging atmosphere with the student leaders on campus wanting one strategy and the Jewish organizations promoting many different strategies. All of that, combined with a high level of student apathy makes this a very difficult situation. The Spring Quarter at UCI has historically been the most active for the MSU in their anti-Israel campus activities. It is during this time that many Jewish students feel apprehensive and attacked. Most of their feelings are due to the programs and information being disseminated that are very anti-Semitic as well as the angry accusations against Israel and it's right to exist. The "focal-point" of the MSU's programming has been anti-Israel week which, in the past, has been named: Israel Awareness Week, Zionism Awareness Week, and last year's Holocaust in the Holy Land. The MSU is a very well organized group with a great deal of funding and generally have a single message on campus. Hillel: Jewish Student Union (JSU) and Anteaters for Israel (AFI) have been active preparing for this Quarter and planning events. Collectively they have created a pro-active "got peace? got israel." campaign. In addition to presenting a pro-Peace/Pro-Israel message their two main goals are To engage Jewish freshmen in all aspects of Jewish & Israel life on campus. To enhance the perception of Hillel: JSU and AFI to the other clubs on campus. We will be using Hillel "Chai" Lights to communicated with you on what has occurred on campus as well as providing any information about upcoming events or change in strategies. In addition, we welcome any comments or suggestions you might have. In this issue of Hillel "Chai" Lights you will find out information regarding "got peace? got israel." week at UCI, the upcoming MSU's Anti-Israel week, ways for you to get involved, as well as an open letter from our student leaders on campus, sharing with you first hand their feelings, concerns, as well as their strategy. <http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif> <http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif> <http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif> Letter from Jewish & Pro Israel Student Leaders at UCI <http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:eENEVk1o0VijJM:http://i2.tinypic.com/20 7oqd1.jpg> To Whom It May Concern: As you may already know, the spring quarter at UC Irvine is a trying time for Israel advocates, as it is generally associated with the Anti-Semitic rhetoric brought forth by the Muslim Student Union during their "Anti-Zionism Week" (last year entitled "Holocaust in the Holy Land). The purpose of this letter is to inform you of what Jewish students and other Israel advocates on campus have planned for this quarter in terms of our own message and our response to the hate-filled message of the MSU. You are getting this letter because the students of UC Irvine see you as a partner in the effort to advocate for Israel on our campus, and hope that you will continue to move forward as our partner. In the past, there has been a divide between what has been planned and what has actually happened, as this period of time can be very emotional, and even the best laid plans can fall by the wayside in favor of a more emotional and oft irrational response to the fervent hate being spewed on our campus. However, this year, we have labored to put together a strategy that we feel serves the best interests of our students at UC Irvine, and hope that you will use whatever influence you have to ensure that the Jewish community of Orange County, upon whom we rely for so much, will stand next to us as partners, rather then opposite us, as a divided people, striving for the same goals. We have decided to further the message that we promote during every other week of the school year, that being a pro-Israel message that does not waver at the behest of another group, but one that is solely ours. The Jewish Students, led by Hillel: The Jewish Student Union and Anteaters for Israel will be holding a week of events, bringing together all of our on- campus partners the week of May 7, 2007, which will proactively promote the pro-Israel message on UC Irvine's campus. We hope that in doing so we will shape the MSU's message, rather then the other way around. We look forward to your input, as we greatly appreciate any help that the Jewish Community external to UC Irvine can give to the students, but we also hope that you will partner with us in a peaceful, pro-Israel message during the following week, beginning May 14, 2007, which will serve as the MSU's "Anti-Zionism Week". We will have a message, and that is actively promoting Israel, and we will be giving out information to counter the false claims made by their speakers, but we will behave with dignity and respect for our fellow UCI students. We ask that if you find yourself making your way to our campus that you follow our lead, and behave accordingly. We do not mean to tell you what you should and shouldn't do, as we are not in a position to do so, we merely wish to inform you of what our intentions are during this period of time, and ask for your support, in any way that you can give it. But we also ask, that in your support, if you are on our campus, that you actively take part in our plan, as we are the people who are responsible for the actions of the pro-Israel community on campus. "got peace?" is a campaign to counter the hateful message being spewed by other groups on this campus. Marketing for "got peace? got israel." week. began several weeks ago with a series of different ads in the "New University." Each ad contained one of the following statements: got diversity? got democracy? got freedoms? got rights? In addition, we have branded "got peace? got israel." on shirts, banners, pens and other items. "got peace? got israel."week has focused on the following sub-themes. The themes will be displayed on campus through multiple vehicles: speakers, booths, bands, drummer, food, posters, and more. got diversity? Minorities in Israel, Arab Israelis got democracy? Voting Rights, Arabs in the Government got rights? Women's Right, Gay Rights got freedom? Religious Freedoms and Coexistence "got peace? got israel." programs and events have been made possible by the Israel on Campus Coalition, Jewish Federation of Orange County, and StandWithUs. <http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif> <http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif> <http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif> <http://img.constantcontact.com/letters/images/spacer.gif> The Forgotten Refugees is screeened at UCI as part of "got peace? got israel." week Gina Bublil Waldman from JIMENA - "Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa" shares her story <http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=iyltv4bab.0.8vphp9n6.jrdueyn6.3765&ts=S0237&p=http% 3A%2F%2Fwww.ochillel.org> Thank you to StandWithUs for bringing Gina Bublil Waldman and the David Project film "The Forgotten Refugees" to UCI. Students and community members were facinated to hear firsthand about the nearly 900,000 Jews - indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa - who lived in what are now known as the "Arab States." Today, 99% of these indigenous Jewish communities no longer exist. ~ Arab governments forced the Jewish people to leave, confiscated their personal and communal property and stripped us them of therir citizenships. Students enjoyed hiim so much that he is coming back on Thursday night to do another even co-sponsred by Anteaters for Israel, Hillel: Jewish Student Union, and Mesa Court Residence Hall. Alula Tzadik, a dreadlocked, ebony-skinned Ethiopian Jew in his late thirties, says his music is an expression of the many disparate strands of his life. His songs are in Hebrew, in Amharic or in English with an underpinning of Ethiopian, Latin and German musical influences, and overlaid by American hip-hop and reggae. The story Alula Tzadik tells of his early life is both sad and complex. His mother, an Ethiopian Jew, was thirteen when she was raped by one of the Ethiopian teachers in the Christian school she attended. The child grew up in a Catholic orphanage in Ethiopia, not aware of his Jewish heritage but living with its stigma, made aware by the other kids and some of the elders that he was somehow inferior. In his teens he went to live with his father, a prominent personage in Addis Ababa with a passion for all things Lutheran. Later he managed to find his mother, who taught him Hebrew songs and prayers and reconnected him with his Jewish roots. His musical career started, oddly enough, when he was sent by his father to Germany to study medicine. Students from Hillel: Jewish Student Union Anteaters for Israel, along with Hillel staff, members of StandWithUs and community members will be handing out information flyers - created by the research department of StandWithUS - at each of these events, as well as attending, monitering, and asking questions to the speakers.
