SOMALIA: EYES ONLY VEIL BANNED AND BURNT IN CAPITAL http://www.adnki.com/index_2Level_English.php?cat=Security <http://www.adnki.com/index_2Level_English.php?cat=Security&loid=8.0.4131434 20&par=0> &loid=8.0.413143420&par=0#
Mogadishu, 10 May (AKI) - With a surprise measure, Somalia's transitional government has banned women wearing the niqab or eyes-only veil, whose use had increased sharply in Mogadishu in particular, when the city was controlled by the Islamic Courts. The decree, believed to be a temporary measure, seems intended to prevent the use of the full veil, and corresponding long loose garments, from being used by potential suuicide bombers to hide their identity and seek to attack the Ethiopian troops in the country. The measure has been met with protests by women in Mogadishu, especially those who wear the full veil, who feel they are being persecuted by the local authorities. When it was under Islamist control in the second half of 2006, women there were instructed to cover their heads. There are also reports of Somali security sources seizing, and even publicly burning women's veils, according to witnesses cited by various news agencies. There were reports of a large explosion in the Somali capital Thursday. According to the Shabelle network, the explosion reportedly occurred near the Ambassador Hotel that houses government officials in a zone patrolled by Somali and AMISOM troops. Witnesses told Shabelle that the strong blast which took place around 8:20 am local time shook the neighborhood, forcing the Somali and Ugandan troops to seal off the perimeter. There is no word yet on casualties. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] -------------------------- Want to discuss this topic?
