Thank you Birgitt, thanks all for your input!
It makes much sense to me Birgitt and you point on some key concepts including
the purpose of the voting - to collect information of where the collective
energy is strongest at this moment in time. I agree that the instructions are
important.

I actually invite participants to put their dot either at a whole report or
mark a specific aspect in a report. The dot still counts for the report as a
whole but also gives additional information that can be taken into account.

We had our planning meeting for the OST I mentioned and the group went deep to
find a powerful theme focusing on their core task re supporting rights for
minorities all over Sweden.

The OST will last from 11-16.30 (physical) + 9-12 online one week later (using
Zoom + Miro) in that online action planning part of the OST I plan to re-open
space, have two brief sessions for action planning and a closing.

Next steps will be a 1st followup in August and another to trace and reflect on
impacts, early december.

My two sponsors are taking a deeper OST learning journey with me in combination
with this assignment. Reading the GC workbook, being part of the whole process
incl setting the room up (yes I did offer them to facilitate too, but that’ll
be next step!), meetings for reflecting with me.

Next step may well be to spread OST more to people working in this area in
Sweden!
Wohoo
Thomas

Hi Michael and Thomas,
I hope that someone on this list has a good answer for the best software to use
for the voting process. In the 1990's when I had the opportunity to work with
Harrison a few times at OST meetings, he taught me about the importance of
voting as a way to show in priority order what the people at the event felt the
most energy for from the many topics that had arisen. At the time, even way
back then, he used a software that was excellent for the purpose. I forget its
name and don't know if it is still in use. A very important part of this voting
process lies in the instructions and to this day we still teach the importance
of these instructions in Working with Open Space Technology (a module of the
Genuine Contact program). The instruction, as per Harrison, is NOT to say to
people to vote what they think is important. Instead, the instruction is to say
to the people to vote based on what they feel energy for. The thinking behind
this is that if the organization wants to move something forward, it needs to
work with the flow of what people have energy for, rather than some abstract
concept of what is perceived as important. In other words, what people have
energy for is what we want to capture.

In the years since that time, I have used this form of developing collective
awareness of what there is energy for in the collective, despite the many many
good ideas that were put forward. I still do this by topic, instead of by every
action step that has been identified, although some people have expressed a
desire to be able to vote only on certain actions, and not on the whole topic.

In one important meeting, everyone in the room new that there was one VERY
IMPORTANT topic to the company. Yet, no one voted for it as they didn't have
energy for it...they were fatigued by endless discussions about it and had a
long history of it not moving forward. In the debrief meeting with the sponsors
after the OST meeting, the sponsors expressed their understanding of the lack
of energy for the topic, although they found this disappointing. They agreed to
stay on track with supporting those topics that people had expressed energy for
and not making a big deal about no votes for their IMPORTANT topic, admitting
they hadn't voted for it either. When we did a follow up six months later, many
of the hot energy topics had already been completed. We took another vote for
energy of the topics that were identified in that initial OST meeting to find
what they now had energy for. And not so surprisingly, after all the progress
they had made on other things, the IMPORTANT topic now received many votes as
the energy of the collective moved toward it.

in genuine contact,
Birgitt

Dear Thomas,

usually, the folks at the action planning part of an os event will post
their projects at the beginning of the action planning part of the open
space event.
They are the champions for acting on the projects that have heart and
meaning for them.

Against that background, what is the purpose of the "voting process"
before the action planning?

Who needs the information on "what people feel most engaged to continue
working on"?

My experience with action planning after an os event (one week and two
weeks later) is that the focusing on action projects appears to be more
grounded AND that folks that were not at the os event itself appear at
the action planning part... my assumption has been, that folks talk to
others that did not attend the os event and sometimes "recruit" those
that need to be part of the projects, that they champion.

At several occasions folks that had been at the os event and then also
took part in action planning told me that the extra person they
"recruited" for the action planning had been very skeptical about the
ost event and had felt no need to be part of it.

Have a great day in Kungsbacka on your Stiefmütterchen Weg
