Hello Joanna Open Space is just as you mention... fear, excitment, worries and later on, you will bring a new baby to life! What I have learnt as an OS practitioner, consultant, university professor, telemarketing instructor (would not like to mention marriage consultant) is that no matter how big your fear and worries are, act in a way no one else notices it!. Other hint is *do not take care of logistics*. Will mail a file where I have marked some usful paragraphs. Best wishes and lots of success! Hello Joanna, welcome to this space! My biggest comfort is to believe that "whatever happens is the only thing that could" and really trust that everyone will experience exactly what they need to. I don't think our, as facilitators, task/goal should be to make sure that the participants get it; it is more that we make sure the space is open so that everyone gets what they need to get out of this experience. Joanna: Add just to add a slighty different take on these great comments... Don't worry...YOU'LL get it too! Have fun and please give us the story! Chris On 9/5/06, kerry napuk wrote: Dear Joanna and Jasmine I feel the hardest task of a facilitator is to* let go and give up any notion of control*. After all, it is the participants' event, not yours. They own the process and the outcomes. You are just there to show them how it works. So, advice about trusting the process is spot on. But, more important, trust yourself! As Harrison says, if you have a good heart and know about the process, it will be fine. Brian Bainbridge gave me comfort at one OSonOS by saying that he always forgot to mention something during the introduction but the process always worked. So, don't worry about that either. People have an innate desire to engage with each other and society has created structures and organisations to stop this happening. Once space is opened, therefore, Harrison advises you to just get out of the way - human nature will do everything else! Convergence is another topic with many different views. We prefer voting by dots to create priority issues and taking the priorities with any other issues that emerge into action planning. The more time you have, the more time for planning and creation of action teams. Good luck and let the OSLIST know how you get on. Joanna, I've done 3 two hour sessions with MBA students (Different group each time) in the past 6 months. They ALL "Got it" :-) They especially got it when the issue was burning and the space open. And I'm ALWAYS terrified the night before . . . But opening the space next day seems to calm me. You'll see some wonderful things happen. Re: Virgin OSer needs reassurance!
Joanna-- My music teacher used to tell me that the terror I felt before a performance was just energy that did not yet have a place to flow. In my experience, most OS participants "get it" right away, and are only too happy to self-organize. Sometimes, a few may not, but there are plenty of others to help them find their way. There may be someone who is not comfortable releasing control over what is happening--this will be learning for them, or they just may not be able to participate at this time. Releasing my own attachment to controlling the outcome of the meeting is a powerful spiritual experience for me. And my own trust in the group to find their own way is probably my greatest contribution to "holding space." Like trying anything new, you won't know what it is really like until you try it--here's hoping that it will be a marvelous experience for you AND your students! They'll get it. No matter how much you meditate or don't, they'll get it. No matter how terrified or calm you are, they'll get it. No matter how they behave in the space that you hold for them, they will get it, even if they don't behave as you'd expect people that "get it" to do so. We have two hours and a burning question; we have the space and I've been meditating like crazy. And yet...I'm still terrified. My real fear is that all the students won't get it. I desperately want to let go and let it happen, and I'm worried about what will happen when I do. Re: Virgin OSer needs reassurance!
Hi, Joanna -- Hmmm...seems a bit like the concern some of your coaching clients might have -- when they identify what they really know inside - what they can really be doing that makes their heart sing. I'm guessing perhaps that you coach them to trust the feeling inside, do some great preparation, then take the leap... ...which is what I am guessing you are doing. Trust the people, trust the process, trust that this is the time and you (and they) are in the right place...and...breathe... ...and tell us all how it goes. I hope the room won't feel crowded as we will all be there, supporting you. Re: Virgin OSer needs reassurance!
hi joanna. you're sure to get lots of encouragement from this list. it will go fine. it could be that some don't get it. but, some will and they'll get the ball rolling. one thing i usually share in the opening of group work goes something like this: "I ask that we see silence as a friend during our time together whether we're in small groups or in this large group. if silence comes, let's not feel like we need to chase it away, remembering that frequently, it's the nudgings of silence that bring into being ideas and voices which would've otherwise remained unspoken." once you share something like this, you and others might be able to rest at ease if silence happens, waiting for what it might bring. sometimes silence and pause doesn't happen. but if it does, it's nice when all can welcome it. look forward to hearing how it goes. john --- Joanna Fletcher wrote: > Any hot tips for a newbie?
