I have no idea where the problem could be... First thing would be to verify
that it's possible to read any temperatures at all from the device.

I'm not really sure which kind of adapter he use, but I'll try to get some
more information about that.

As it happens I do have a bundle of DS2436B devices here. I am busy
constructing a test setup to try out a few of my theories. Since I
plan on using OWFS for some of these, I shall be pleased to try out a
few of them this way.

Which parts of the OWFS set are now suspect?
