Does anyone have research to support the discontinuation of weighing placentas as a routine practice? I have worked in places that stopped doing it years ago and feel anecdotally that weighing placentas has no clinical benefit.However, I don't know if it has been discontinued as a result of

I think it was stopped more as a result of lack of research to show why it was done. I always thought we did it as students more out of interest because healthy placentas usually weigh around 1/6 the weight of the baby so it was a way for those new to view placentas to gauge whether the size was

In my training, in UK in '79, the episiotomy rate was very high. Of my 30 obligatory deliveries, 29 had epis, the 30th being a multip who delivered too quickly for anyone to push scissors into my hands. I was only taught how to deliver with one, no effort was made to teach how to protect

Dear Helen, Think laterally, get them to give you good evidence giving the reason thatthey weigh placentas, other than that they have been doing it forever - not a good reason. If they cannot give you evidence why it should continue it should be stopped, you start not weighing them and
