I was wondering are there any
statistics for planned unassisted birth in low-risk pregnancies published
anywhere? Since midwives are not

Hi,
I've been approached by a friend about contraception options. She's
previously been on the combined pill (Brenda I think), but had serious side
effects the main one being periods of blindness. She's been told that these
episodes would be likely to continue to occur if she took the pill
This didnt come back to me

Wow, Felicity. Thank you so much for this
info,
Hi Alice,
http://ccli.org/nfp/contraception/pill.php was one place I found with
references for further study - am too tired to dig further. I did find
that blood clots in the veins are related to the oestrogen in the
pill. Use of the pill is linked to blood clots forming which in some

Hi Paivi
At this year's Homebirth conference (Geelong), midwife Ina May Gaskin spoke about her daughter-in-law's use of dancing during labour (not sure but think she may have been from Brazil and used indigenous music to set the rhythm). Ina showed us some photos - they were great because she
Hi Angela,
I actually met Ina May last week, and she was
talking about her daughter-in-law's birth. Maybe that is , what inspired me to
start thinking of this. I didn't see the photoes though. I will email her and
ask. I loved the story how this woman was dancing with a stick trough labour.

No worries Jo - we've
spoken today and I've emailed on some further information and contacts to her
that might be of use. Sounds like you've done a fantastic favour to her,
putting out your feelers for support - as I think quality support is all she
wants and needs to have the birth she
Could anyone
enlighten me is there a course for doulas in Australia. Iam a midwife and I have
a friend who has had 2 years of mid training but due to circumstances was
unable to finish her training. She would like to continue working as a support
person with pregnant and labouring women.
Yes Debbie, you are correct in stating that belly dancing was (and still
is!!) used as a skill for women to assist them in labour not just for mens
pleasure in Egyptian pubs. It is believed that women would come together in
a circle, arms all interlocked and encourage the labouring woman in
I've just noticed that the Bubhub forums are featuring very prominent
advertisements for a bottlefeeding product - even in the breastfeeding
and advice from Pinky McKay section of the boards.
This is a site that boasts about being supported by the Australian
Lactation Consultants Association
Sure will complain Lara - I hadnt seen it - I get the threads sent to me to
answer - very displeased.

At risk of getting crucified for being commercial:
Many mainstream sites do include advertisements with formulas and bottles
because they are not motivated by birth or better outcomes for women and
babies, it's just a business and dollars to them. I often do wonder about
the endorsements too,
