I am a student midwife as well as a staff member in NICU and I had an interesting experience in relation to the bonds formed with parents of babes admitted into NICU. Unfortunately, one of the babe's who had been there long-term had lost the battle to survive and passed away. A difficult situation for any parent of another infant to witness, as it starts to bring questions to the surface such as "is my baby going to make it?' and "did the staff do all they could?" and so forth. The touching aspect of the story was that two mothers of gravely ill babe's attended the funeral, to show support and grieve in their own way for the lost child. I found this to be a huge undertaking for these parents, but also a very touching gesture, which I hope was received well. I think these kinds of inevitable bonds are often forgotten by staff, and it is nice to be reminded that there are people whom, despite their own difficult circumstances are willing to offer their presence to say "im here for you".
