RE: [ozmidwifery] FW: Joan Donley

2006-01-17 Thread jo

Hi all,

Elaine
Norling is writing a tribute to
Joan Donley for Birthings Magazine. Does anyone have any further info about her;
I’m assuming she is buried in Albany
in NZ not in Aus.

Thanks in advance.

Jo Hunter

One
of the most special woman I have ever met has left us. She was a role model to
me and many others I’m sure. I had the pleasure of meeting her when I was
studying at AUT and talked with her often. It is a sad day for all NZ midwives
and woman, and I’m sure Joan also touched many here in Australia.

Joan
has achieved so much for midwifery worldwide, may she rest peacefully and may
her struggles and fights still be remembered and continue to be  fought by
us all.

Kirsten

Text from today's NZ Herald:
Donley, Elsa Joan (nee Carey) O.B.E.
On December 4, 2005 at Northaven Hospital,
Whangaparaoa; aged 89 years
Mother of Robert, Derelys, David, Adrian and Patrick.
Grandmother of Robert, Geoffrey, Michael, Tamarin,
Mandy, Shaun, Graeme, Steven, Matthew, Lauren, Hayden and Vanessa.
Great Grandmother of Madeleine, Hunter, Chloe and
Riley.
Joan was an internationally acclaimed advocate for
normal birth, and in the 1980's had a key role in the establishment of the New
Zealand College of Midwives.  As the well established matriarch of
Midwifery Joan's knowledge and wisdom will be sorely missed, but those seeking
a healthier birth and upbringing for their children will find Joan's compendium
for a healthy pregnancy and a normal birth, a legacy of her wisdom.
Thanks to the staff at Northaven Hospital
for their care.
A service will be held at the North Shore Memorial
Park Crematorium Chapel, 235
  Schnapper Rock Road, Albany
at 1.00pm on Wednesday December 7 to be followed by interment.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Joan Donley
Research Collaboration, P.O. Box
  21106, Christchurch
would be appreciated.

Smoking During Pregnancy Raises Risk for Finger, Toe Deformities

WEDNESDAY, Jan. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Smoking during pregnancy greatly
increases the risk of having a baby with finger or toe deformities,
according to a study covering more than 6.8 million births in the United
States during 2001 and 2002.

The study identified 5,171 children with either extra, webbed or missing
fingers and toes born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy. The mothers
did not report other health risk factors such as heart disease, diabetes or
high blood pressure.

Women who smoked one to 10 cigarettes a day during pregnancy had a 29
percent increased risk of having a baby with finger or toe deformities, the
study found. Smoking 11 to 20 cigarettes a day raised the risk by 38
percent, while smoking 21 or more cigarettes a day raised the risk by 78
percent.

The study appears in the January issue of the journal Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery.

"The results of this study were interesting. We suspected that smoking was a
cause of digital anomalies but didn't expect the results to be so dramatic,"
study author Dr. Benjamin Chang, of the University of Pennsylvania, said in
a prepared statement.

"Smoking is so addictive that pregnant women often can't stop the habit, no
matter what the consequences. Our hope is this study will show expectant
mothers another danger of lighting up," Chang said.

In the United States, webbed fingers or toes occur in one of every 2,000 to
2,500 live births and excess fingers or toes occur in one in every 600 live
births, the researchers said.

Chang said these kinds of abnormalities are the most common kinds of
problems he treats.

"Parents would ask why this happened to their child, but I didn't have an
answer. This study shows that even minimal smoking during pregnancy can
significantly increase the risk of having a child with various toe and
finger defects," he said.

Title: Re: [ozmidwifery] Private Health & Midwifery

I’ve just set up a new link on the main
BellyBelly website for all to access with the summary of covers, contact details
for appropriate people in health funds and ombudsman details! If anyone has
anything to add, if anything changes etc please let me know and I will update
asap. I have copied some details straight from your emails so thank-you to
those who offered the information.

Please bookmark the link to circulate next
time someone asks or to pass onto others who would like to compare covers
before making their choice. Sorry about the long link, its how my developer has
it set up and it doesn’t quite fit into a specific category.
