In case this is of interest to anyone else, the issue was that the date refiner
was set to be a deep refiner. Unchecking this box allowed it to be used in the
refinement panel like Created

If the next version supports upgrade then the feature will still likely be
included. The fact that it is hidden/disabled means its deprecated and
shouldn't be used and wont be supported.

SharePoint 2010 has the 'Group Work Lists' feature that was used in the
'Group Work Site' template.
