Hi fellow PacketFence users,

Updated snapshot of the upcoming 1.9.0 release were made available on
our website moments ago.

http://www.packetfence.org/download/snapshots.html

Fresh from Holland, this release incorporates major new features since
last snapshot and a massive quantity of enhancements and bugfixes since
1.8.7. Because of this, consider 1.8.7 the last release of the 1.8.x
branch except for important security fixes. There will be no 1.8.8.

On another note, we have some important work already committed in trunk
that will shape what will most likely become 1.10.0 including a lot of
work on integration between 802.1x wired, wireless and our SNMP modules
to provide uniform functionality. Stay tuned!

But for the meantime, back to the snapshot, here is a summary of the
changes since 1.8.8-0.20100406:

New Hardware Support
- Port security and Voice over IP support for Foundry FastIron 4802
(feature sponsored by an entity who prefered to remain anonymous)

New features
- Node category support, you can assign different VLANs or whitelist
violations based on a node's category (#968)
- Added support for Floating Network Devices (See Admin Guide for details)

Enhancements
- More information available in Node Lookup (IP, DHCP lease)
- pfsetvlan is more resistant to configuration mistakes and reports them
(#766)
- Net-SNMP 5.4 support (#940 Thanks to Maikel)
- Even more work on error-reporting (#847, #964, #993)
- New helper synchronization scripts in addons/high-availability
- Even more little improvements (#866, #916, #952)

Documentation improvements
- Added directions to configure PacketFence in a routed environment to
the admin guide
- More MySQL tips (#951)

Bug fixes
- Even more captive portal stability fixes (#961)
- Fixed RPM spec to create package packetfence-remote-snort-sensor again
(#888)
- Fixed problems with DHCP Fingerprint submission
- Fixed call to non-existing script lookup_node.pl in pfdhcplistener (#858)
- Correct VLAN information shown in Node Lookup (#893)
- Minor corrections to the Admin Web UI
- Clarified some error messages
- Misc. stability and general fixes (#833, #885, #868, #869, #896, #923,
#927, #946, #950)

For the curious, a complete list of changes since latest stable release
will be provided at the end of this email.

If you are upgrading, always remember to check the UPGRADE file provided
by the RPM or in the source tarball.

Let us know if you experience any problems.

By the way, we now have a development yum repository if you want to
track development releases more easily. Instructions on setting it up
are provided in the snapshot page.

Thanks for listening,
Have a great day!
