Nactu backs EFF, PAC in 2014 elections

(Picture: Sapa)
Johannesburg - The National Council of Trade Unions (Nactu) has resolved to
support the PAC and EFF in this year's general election, the trade union
federation said on Monday.

Nactu had invited political parties to present their 2014 manifestos to the
federation's central committee on 18 March, general secretary Narius Moloto
said in a statement.

The parties which attended were the Azanian People's Organisation, the Pan
Africanist Congress (PAC), the United Democratic Movement and the Economic
Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Nactu held a central committee meeting on Sunday in Johannesburg where the
decision to support the two parties was taken.

Nactu resolved to endorse the manifestos of the PAC and EFF as those were
rooted in the interests of the workers, Moloto said.

The central committee meeting... further resolved that Nactu shop stewards
will volunteer their time to the PAC and EFF as party agents where
necessary and engage in campaign activities to recruit voters for these two
parties.

The trade union federation's affiliates, which includes the Association of
Mineworkers and Construction Union, would communicate the decision to their
members and encourage them to participate and campaign as well.

We implore all our members to use their vote wisely and vote the PAC or
EFF based on their individual choices, said Moloto.

This deal with the construction industry brings the three week strike to an

Ten days ago, one of the unions involved in the strike action came to an
 agreement with construction
 firms.http://fspinvest.co.za/articles/south-africa/some-of-the-construction-sectors-woes-are-over-as-one-union-accepts-wage-offer-1456.html

The Building Construction and Allied Workers’ Union (BCAWU) agreed to an
increase of between 8% and 10% with construction companies, notes
 *IOL*http://www.iol.co.za/business/companies/construction-strike-ends-1.1577181#.UjLalz9-E1I.
But the NUM rejected this offer.

*The new deal struck by the NUM benefits BCAWU members too*

NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka says that “all workers in the sector would
receive the higher increase” that the NUM negotiated, adds
 *IOL*http://www.iol.co.za/business/companies/construction-strike-ends-1.1577181#.UjLalz9-E1I

The new deal, which affects 90,000 workers, is “almost double the country’s

 Bloomberg*http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-09-13/south-africa-construction-strike-ends-after-12-wage-increase.html.
The new deal led to the strike ending yesterday.

Despite the strike lasting for three weeks, it “appeared to have a
 relatively small impact,” says
 *Fin24*http://www.fin24.com/Economy/Construction-strike-ends-20130913-3.
With many workers refusing to strike, “many building sites” remained
 active.

Other strikes had much bigger effects on their related industries. Strikes
by “workers in the motor and gold

operations at some of the country’s biggest

Utterances like that really dented the image of the Africanist fraternity.

sense in what other comrades are say, that the standard in the PAC has been

It has always been to the expectations that the PAC NEC would from
time-to-time re-act to developing events both local and international but
 to
the emb arassment of the PAC members the party remains leaderless. Of
lately, Hugo Chavez is no more, Marikana and farms strikes swept the
country, e-tolls debacle is causing headache, fuel-price hikes which can be
subsidized is reaping havoc. The so called party leaders are comfortably
silent. Which other tools do they need to steer the masses. Letlapa
Mphahlele appears to be a walking dead-man, his SG, Narius Moloto is
obssessed with power working for more than three organisation as the
secretary-general, this is madness. He cannot issue at least a three-lines
media statement re-affirm ing PAC policies. With the exception of other
NEC members who are trying to save the PAC, the entire top-six must step
aside, they're completely useless for the party progress. They 've to
 recall
that they enforced Butterworth congress and they contested their current
positions willingly and knowingly about challenges ahead. They have sold
 out, let them go!

Comrade lack of party/payco policy on energy is creating a vacuum in
propagatin' our position. I wil suggest to those cadres who have been
invited to ask themselves question what will payco achieve in this
regard? As i don't believe that payco should partake in this march
we've nothing to gain.

There's no policy position I know on this issue in the PAC. When you partake
as PAYCO or PAC it should be founded on policy position of the party, when
we represent the party in different platforms in reality we advance party

the pros cons of the issue not mere excitement. Mandela made the decision
to stop nuclear proliferation in SA out of excitement and to please the
outside world, the consequences had devastating effects to the poor and
working class in the form of exorbitant electricity prices and billions
wasted maintaining nuclear infrastructure that no longer service society.

I believe PAC government with its industrial strategy founded on
fast-tracking economic emancipation and massive industrialization we cannot
afford to dismiss nuclear energy completely. Of course we should also make
radical steps to move to environmentally friendly renewable energy but we
can't perform miracles, western powers who are major polluters must lead the
way, they can't have it both ways, proponents of renewable energy and keep
nuclear energy. Africa's pollution is less than 1%, for me these campaigns
are misplaced they must target western polluters.

Let's look these issues from the correct political context informed by our
socioeconomic challenges and standing in world politics.

Comrade President,Iam expecting you as my political Principal to be more
 informed around the
issues of Green politics Renewable energy a.We are not opposed to
industrial development however we are opposed to the use of nuclear energy
hence there are environmental friendly alternatives that could be
used,Green Renewable Energy and solar are the alternative. We cannot allow
the corporates and Western countries continue to use Nuclear energy that is
polluting our environment and putting the lives of the working class at
risk. The law of money making doesn't care for the laws of nature.

Cde President should we keep quite when the Developed Capitalist countries
are exporting the ecological crisis to Africa,by dumping toxic waste and
establishing the most environmentally destructive industries in Africa.

I will continue to PUSH this campaigns,as I sit in the Green Energy Forum
on my capacity as PAYCO NEC Member and Community activist. There are future

PAC would join the march on what basis? Is it a principled policy
 position
 or NGO opportunistic position?

From a developing country that needs urgent boost on industrialization
 and
massive need of energy resources, nuclear remains an important option.

We just cannot join a bandwagon of western countries who are developed
 and
used the very cheap nuclear energy to get where they are today.

Cadre Krumah you've said mouthful insofar as unity is concerned, to
all comrades going to congress let contribute meaningful in building
PAC.

Genuine comrades within the PAC including its component structures aspire
for a state whereat members and particularly those in leadership positions
and those who might have led should not be pharisist on forging party unity.
We should not condemn Letlapa and other for being factionalist when we are
 indifferent.

I personally urge you and many other PAC members that at all times efforts
should be made to achieve unity among comrades as opposed to antogonising
each and every PAC comrade who hold differing views. The resentment comrades
have against each other is not healthy and above all it deepens disunity
 within the PAC.

While the ANC continues to dismally fail in bringing any meangingfull change
for the vast majority of the African masses and neocolonialism strengthens
its stranglehold in Africa, we as PAC continue to be weaken by our own
inability to unite even on the most basic and less complex matters. I
believe that all of us should spent whatever remaining energy and
intelligence we each posses to forge unity with purpose and unity in action.

There are comrades who have condemned the approach to resolve PAC political
and organisational issues through neocolonial and bourgouisie courts and
preferred more of party internal mechanism amidst the daunting challenges
including counter organisation. However, there are comrades who strongly
believe that political efforts had been tried without success thus the court
approach might bring a solution whilst other comrades embraced all forms of
interventions to reclaim the PAC position the party on a socialist
revolutionary programme. We can appreciate all the three perspectives since
none is antagonistic to the others, most comrades are driven by a
determination to reclaim and rebuild the PAC, thus we should forge unity
with a common purpose amd action than attack each others to an extent we are
indifferent to the self contradictory statements of cde Letlapa. Cde Xaba
views should be appreciated and like many other views we should contribute
in making their effort and risks to be succesful to reclaim the PAC, thus
all comrades who will attend this congress should be encouraged to be united
and act in unison as oppossed to experiences of Alice whereat comrades who
complained about the decree failed yo act in unison thud Letlapa was
retained. If the court application fails and if attempts to reclaim PAC from
Letlapa are also not successful, then this implies all in PAC is back to
where things have been before. . .

Forge unity than disunity, organise and not agonise other comrades.

I can only hope that in my message there is adeqaute sense and reason.
