Ok, what am I doing wrong?
I have created two folders, the one being $dtb and the other audio+podcasts.
$dtb works great but I can't access the book on the other folder. Did I
name it improperly perhapse? The bookshelf just shows the six books I've
gotten from the site.
Thoughts?

Well if you're talking about the old disc players, those needles were death
on records, but yah, you could play em. Why do ya think those old talking
book records had such poor quality?

I have a nice sony I think X19? Clips onto your shirt and it seems to do
really well. Powered with a shirt button type battery.

Sure you can do the cartridge thing but why? Just as easy to have a flash
drive I'd think. I'd think APH would include whatever you'd need ccord wise
with the cartridges though.

My first guess would be that the mic has become unchecked. Could be as
simple as checking the mic.

If you know you're set to manual, just press the left and right arrows while
in record. You'll need to be monitoring with an earphone but I think this
will do the trick.
HTH.

Ok, I've got the latest version of Goldwave. What do I have and what if
anything would I be duplicating if I got Total Recorder? Sounds like
goldwave does much the same thing.

Doesn't
This is interesting, so last night I tried, just for fun flipping from book
to book to book. It flipped through them as fast as I could punch the
button. I didn't have to wait for the whole title to be spoken. I'm not
sure what your complaint is here.
