 Hi jim,

I am using n Track a little and I would say it rates a B grade in terms of
accessibility. things are pretty straightforward, but the one problem I
have is that I am unable to arrow up or down from the menu bar. Like if I
hit Alt F for file, when I try to arrow up or down all Jaws says is
Menu. However, these items can be activated by using the Jaws cursor, and
there are some shortcut keystrokes given when reviewing with the Jaws
cursor. I spoke with a FS tech and he really couldn't help me, so I guess
I am going to have to learn a little scripting to get Jaws and N Track to
work better together. it seems like it would be a simple thing to script,
I just haven't had the time lately to tackle it. If you know anything
about scripting, perhaps we could work together to develop some
scripts. This is a great program, well worth the money, IMHO. BTW, I
have
the current versions of both Jaws and N Track.

OTDJ Question

2005-01-03 Thread Jardata_Mail_Services
Hello List!

I reinstalled OTSDJ recently and added Snowman's JAWS scripts. The program
runs correctly, but I cannot get rid of the scratchy sound, especially when the
programs starts. I did it previously, but the Graphics Analyzer of Dynamics
Analyzer features seem to be different in the latest version. Can anyone tell
me how to get the smooth clear sound in this program like before?

I really want to get my broadcasting show on the road.

Also, is there a playlist program I could get to practice playlist manipulation
with?

Finally, is Winamp as easy to use in broadcasting as many people say?

Subject: sp2 and burning CD's, issues?

Hi everyone!
this question might have been raised before and if yes well all my
apologies to ask it again.

I recently upgraded to windows xp sp2 pro edition. I don't know if it is
related to this but yesterday I wanted to burn a CD. Everything seemed to
run smoothly and my burning software (I used real player 10 for this) said
that tracks were on CD. As I checked the CD I found out that there was
nothing at all on it.
I used a CDR, burning at a 24X speed.
After this I tried with roxio easy CD Creator 5 and nothing. Same issue.
So, what is it due to? Is there something in SP2 that prevents the burning
of CDs?
Do I need to upgrade roxio to CD/DVDcreator 7?

I'm asking this because given the price of such upgrade I'd like to make
sure that there is an issue with sp2. If there is none known then that
means that the problem comes from somewhere else (CD burner for instance)

Thanks in advance for your kind answer

As far as I can tell, vorbis rocks compared to mp3 files. That's when you
put vorbis at a 128 bitrate. Of course, I don't mind having mp3 files at
320 but at 128 ogg vorbis files sound great. Although nothing compares to
a
 wave file.

Hello and Happy New Year to all you good folks: I received one of those
FM
transmitters from /C-Crane for Christmas. Now..I need to know..where it
is
that I can plug it in! I don't have any output jacks on mycomputer; I
have a plug where the speaker is; below that is an input jack..and below
that is where the microphone plugs in. Okay..stupid question time: am I
correct in assuming that plugging the transmitter into the input jack of
the computer won't work? If it would, it'd solve a problem as..like I
mentioned earlier..the computer doesn't have a line out; it just has a
line in! So does that mean that I must use the speaker jack? Thanks
for
your help; you may remember..I'm the guy that..a little while back..was
looking to find where my jacks were located; I've located themm..but am
unsure of where would be the appropriate place to put the FM transmitter!
Hopefully in the not-too-distant future, I'll have another computer; one
with a bonified soundcard in it! Thanks again.

Re: recording with sound forge

2005-01-03 Thread Jerry Richer
Doc! With Sound Forge you can only record one source at a time. The
source can be monaural or stereo. You can not record separate signals on
each of the two stereo channels. You can record a track, then record
another and copy them onto one another over and over again but you can't
record more than one signal at a time. If you want true multi-track
capability you might consider Sonar. Many people use Sonar to do their
multi-track recording then use Sound Forge to create a stereo master. Check
out Sonar at www.chirpingbat.com/sonar.shtml

Hi Frank. Soundforge is a sound editing program. With it, you can use
reverb, and many other things with sound, and with the Effects menu, you
can shift the pitch of a recording, and if you want, you can get the
noise-reduction plug-in, to take out unwanted noise from vinal, and also
other sounds like air conditioner noise, as well as other hums. I hope this
helps. Maybe others can give you a more formal explanation.

2005-01-03 Thread Kelly Pierce

   Kelly

   PC World.com - Dec 29, 2004
http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,119016,00.asp

Risk Your PC's Health for a Song?

Ads and adware have a new way to get on your computer--through files
that appear to be music and video.

by Andrew Brandt and Eric Dahl, PCWorld.com

Think you're downloading a new song or video? Watch out--that file may
be stuffed with pop-ups and adware.

PC World has learned that some Windows Media files on peer-to-peer
networks such as Kazaa contain code that can spawn a string of pop-up ads
and install adware. They look just like regular songs or short videos in
Windows Media format, but launch ads instead of media clips.

When we ran the files, we noted over half a dozen pop-ups, some
attempts to download adware onto our test PC, and an attempt to hijack our
browser's home page. However, you can take steps to guard your PC against
this ad invasion.

   Off-Key Experience

A reader initially alerted PC World to an ad-laden Windows Media Audio
file, titled Alicia Keys Fallin' Songs In A Minor 4.wma. We then found
two other WMA files and two Windows Media Video files that had been
similarly modified.

Using a packet analysis tool called Etherpeek, we determined that each
media file loaded a page served by a company called Overpeer (owned by
Loudeye). That page set off a chain of events that led to the creation of
several Internet Explorer windows, each containing a different ad or
adware.

Overpeer first made news in mid-2002 by offering its services to
record companies looking to stop P-to-P pirates. It creates fake audio
files that purport to be popular songs but play only a short loop of the
track or an antipiracy message; the file then pops up a window offering
the downloader a chance to buy the song. By flooding file-sharing services
with spoofed files, Overpeer makes finding real music files more
difficult.

Marc Morgenstern, Loudeye vice president and general manager of
digital media asset protection, says the files we found come from a
different division of the company--one that targets users with promotions
or ads based on the keywords those users search for on P-to-P networks or
in other venues.

Though the two businesses differ, the result is likely the same--a
further reduction in the effectiveness of popular P-to-P networks.
Morgenstern characterized Overpeer's actions as just deserts for people
who illegally trade copyrighted works for free. Remember, the people who
receive something like (the ad-laden media files), in some cases, were on
P-to-P, and they were trying to get illicit files, he says.

   Firms Surprised

PC World contacted Microsoft and the seven ad-serving companies whose
ads popped up when we ran the Keys audio file. We're looking into exactly
what's going on with this file and checking to see if this particular
model is in keeping with the licensing terms for Windows Media [Digital
Rights Management], says David Caulton, group product manager for
Microsoft's Windows Digital Media Division. We wouldn't want to endorse
anything that involved delivery of content that appears to be one thing,
and then something else is delivered.

Only one of the advertising firms, Kanoodle, responded to us.
Kanoodle stringently vets all prospective partners to determine in
advance how they will distribute our sponsored links, Lance Podell, the
company's president emailed PC World. As in this case, upon detecting or
discovering any prohibited distribution activity, we eliminate it
immediately. Indeed, Kanoodle's ads no longer appear when we relaunch the
file.

   DRM Loophole

A loophole in the Windows Media DRM process allows companies to create
ersatz media files and link them to adware. Normally, when you download a
protected Windows Media file, you also receive a license that lets you
play it. According to Caulton, if Windows Media Player can't find a valid
license on your PC, it checks in with a remote system running Microsoft's
Windows Media DRM Server.

You'll rarely see that happen. Some files, though, are set up to ask
you for information before playing. They do this by displaying a URL in a
dialog box labeled License Acquisition. Normally that dialog box is used
to check for a user name or offer a chance to purchase the file that's
being played.

For example, a legitimate DRM-encrypted file might let you play it
three times, then bring up a window asking if you want to buy it. Or a
band might offer a song to you for free if you agreed to sign up for its
mailing list or view a 15-second commercial. At least, that's the way it's
supposed to work.

But since the license dialog box acts just like an

Re: New Sound Card

2005-01-03 Thread doc
SPDIF

History

Since the early 80's, a step towards digital audio has been set by the
introduction of the Compact Disc player. In the beginning, those signals
stayed inside
the set, and were converted to analog signals before leaving the cabinet. A
new trend is to keep signals into the digital domain as long as possible,
because
this is the only way to keep the signal quality. To make this possible
different devices must be able communicate with one another within the
digital domain.
Several interfaces exist to perform such tasks, from which one has grown to
the audio standard worldwide: IEC958 1989-03 (consumer Part) from the EBU.
In Japan an equivalent EIAJ CP-340 1987-9 is standard.

Characteristics

The interface

IEC958 is a newer standard which supersedes AES/EBU and also S-PDIF. The
S/PDIF interface (IEC-958) is a 'consumer' version of the AES/EBU-interface.
The
two formats are quite compatible with each other, differing only in the
subcode information and connector. The professional format subcode contains
ASCII
strings for source and destination identification, whereas the commercial
format carries the SCMS.

Here is a short comparision table of AES/EBU and S/PDIF interfaces:
  AES/EBU S/PDIF (IEC-958)

Cabling 110 ohm shileded TP 75 ohm coaxial or fiber
Connector 3-pin XLRRCA (or BNC)
Signal level 3..10V 0.5..1V
Modulationbiphase-mark-codebiphase-mark-code
Subcode information ASCII ID textSCMS copy protection info
Max. Resolution 24 bits 20 bits (24 bit optional)
NOTE: AES/EBU also exists in 75 ohm/BNC version (AES-3id-1995 standard). 75
ohm BNC version of AES/EBU is very electrically similar to 75 ohm coaxial
S/PDIF
shown above.

The electrical characteristics of AES/EBU are based on on RS-422, so
basically any differential RS-422 chip will do as the receiver and
transmitter chips.
S/PDIF coaxial interface is not specificaly based on any other standard I
know of (but is quite similar in signal levels and bandwidth requrements to
some
video signals).

Both S/PDIF and AES/EBU can, and do transfer 24 bit words. In AES/EBU, the
last 4 bits have a defined usage, so if anyone puts audio in there, it has
to
go to something that doesn't expect the standard specifies. But in S/PDIF,
there's nothing that says what you have to use the bits for, so filling them
all up with audio is acceptable. Typical S/PDIF equipments only use 16 or 20
bit resolutions. While many equipments use more than 16 bits in internal
processing,
it's not unusual for the output to be limited to 16 bits.

Note on HDR-2 (2 pin header) interface used in some PC products:
Many modern PC CD-ROM drives and some soundcards (SB32, AWE32, etc.) have a
two pin digital output connector in the back of the drive and they sometimes
call that interface S/PDIF. Unfortunately the electrical signal which comes
from it is not exactly what is described in S/PDIF specifications. The data
format is exactly the same, but the signal is TTL level (5Vpp) signal
instead of the normal 1Vpp signal. The output level might be selected to
make the
interfacing to other digital electronics easy when signal is travelling
inside the computer (the normal output driver system and input amplifiers
can be
avoided). The downnside of this is that you need to build some electronics
to make the signal from the CD-ROM drive to match what normal S/PDIF
equipments
expect.

Subject: Nixing the Creative Volume Control
I just installed my SB Audogy 2 card. Everything seems to have worked out
all right, except it's now replaced the Windows volume control with
Creative's own. It doesn't, at first glance, appear to be accessible. How
can I get the Windows volume control back, or else make the Creative
volume control accessible?

Re: Talking books todigital files

2005-01-03 Thread Peter Scanlon
When I started talking about the Porta Studio on here I was particularly
referring to one model that had 3 speeds including slow sped as in Talking
book speed. Am I correct in saying Tascam no longer makes a model like this?

You can get them from me. My prices on Tascam and Teac are as good as any
of the heavy weight dealers in the business. I'm sorry I can't tell you
what's available off the top of my head. There's just too much to keep up
with and it's always changing. Do you have any idea what you would want in
such a device?
