Re: Debating on whether to get XM, some info needed

2006-04-29 Thread Wes Derby
Hi Kevin.

Okay, let's see if I can help you...Others may have already, but here's my
opinion.

I'm on the bottom floor of a 3-story apartment building in Everett,
Washington. With my home stereo, I have a MyFi hooked up, and my antenna on
top of the stereo speaker which is on a wall next to a window...I have NO
clue what direction it's facing, and I have a perfect signal. They say to
point it south...I'll admit, I couldn't tell you what direction it's pointed
in if my life depended on it.

In my bedroom, I have the SkyFi with the SkyFi boombox...The antenna's kind
of up against a wall, and my signal is great. The boombox I have (the
DelPhi one) does have a headphone jack. Before I got the MyFi, this one was
hooked up to my home stereo with an RCA plug plugged into the headphone jack
of the boombox, and the two plugs plugged into the back of my stereo, and I
had a great signal.

We also have the car kit for the SkyFi installed in our van, and my wife and
I get a great signal no matter where we are, even in the Cascades, heading
to central Washington. The ONLY place I lose my signal is northbound on I-5
near Fort Lewis, and even that loss is only a few seconds. We travel this
route between Portland Oregon and Seattle quite a bit. For some reason, I
have no signal issues going from Seattle TO Portland though.

As far as the repeaters go, check out the message boards at www.xm411.com.
I'm sure someone there would be happy to check the map for you and let you
know abought the Raleigh-Durham area...In fact, there are plenty of
subscribers on the boards from that area. Registration is free, and unlike
xmfans.com, they don't have one of those Copy the text in the graphic
annoyances from what I recall. And if they do, they'll be willing to help
you around that. Unfortunately, calling XM's customer service might not be
a great idea...Most of the reps I've talked to have tended to be in Canada
or one of the Island nations, are not XM subscribers, and are not very
helpful...Although, now that XM is available legally in Canada, this may
have changed. You can call them at 800-967-2346.

Hope that helps.

 Hi.

With the recent discussion about XM on the list, I am seriously
 considering
getting subscribed to it. I do have some questions that will influence my
 decision.

First, how well do the repeaters work? I am in a basement apartment, and
I'm not sure if my unit faces the right way. Assuming there is a repeater
in my location, Raleigh, North Carolina, how good a signal should I
 expect?
Could I leave the antenna inside the apartment and still receive a signal?
Speaking of repeaters, is there a site where I can learn of repeater
locations? I have looked with a search engine, but all I find are maps of
locations, which doesn't do me a lot of good.

My second main question deals with the boom box XM receiver. Does it have
 a
headphone jack? If it doesn't, I may look at buying the home receiver
model, and take it with me to use in other locations.

Just curious. I've heard some XM channels before, and I like the mix of
 music on them.

Thanks in advance for any info.

2006-04-29 Thread Wes Derby
Sirius isn't good for anyone, unless you're a weightlifter or have a U-Haul
to bring it home in. The units are god-awful, the programming (other than
the NFL) stinks, and from the listening I've done, their DJ's are awful. XM
is lightyears ahead of Sirius as far as technology goes. XM has had the
MyFI and other portable receivers out since before Christmas of 2004...As
far as I've seen, Sirius STILL doesn't have a portable receiver that
actually gets live programming On the Go when not connected to a home or
car kit...Though, the new S50 may have changed that. Either way, they're
still way behind XM. Too much money spent on Hoo-Hoo Stern and not enough
on technology/equipment.

Just my opinion.

Speaking of that, is there any way to mount your whole audio collection, say

out_faac, but i can't find a good compromize between file size and bitrate.
the cd ripping aac encoder works beautifully, however, and winamp refuses to
play stuff encoded in CDEX, or should i just go get EZ CDDA and buy it?

2006-04-29 Thread Tim Grady
Well, its adequate for most people. Most of your criticisms are very
subjective, for example your program one. There really isn't much
difference in the music programming except that XM has added 10 more music
channels with commercials. For the most news, talk and sports Sirius does
better than XM, although there are 1 or two channels that XM carries that I
wish Sirius did carry. For most sports you can't beat Sirius, although XM
does carry the MLB and the ACC basketball and football. I don't no how much
use people have for an on the go portable unit as most people use the
receivers in their cars or homes. Those of us who use it any where else
usually use boomboxes.

nero

2006-04-29 Thread Tyler Wood
Hello again

Its been awhile since I've posted, due to computer repairs. During the time the
store repaired it, I got slight nero upgrades. You see, my sony burner was
supported by nero in the first place; yet my LG one wasn't. I asked them to
instal nero (the bundle). They instal nero express; but this is not a problem,
as I can copy and paiste the files. Now I have a question about the filters:

Actually, I have a lot.

What do all of them mean? I can't find a definission anywhyere (obviously, fade
in and fade out are what they appear to be. But declick, dehiss and such I have
no clue what hiss and click mean, especially since the music in question
usually doesn't have clicks or hisses in it, as far as I can tell). Now for the
fun part; how do I select multiple filters? And what are frames? Isn't that a
millasecond or something? I've been burning cds for 5 years and never before
have I saw these settings.

thanks,

They did, but you can still activate/reactivate an XM PCR unit if necessary.

It is, as far as I know, the most accessible satellite radio unit, and if I
can find one cheap enough, I might just get myself an extra unit on Ebay,
sometime. . I like being able to know what's playing when I'm not online,
and since I'm still on dial up, by the time I get online to look at:

www.xm411.comm

the song has changed. But, that site does work very well for me.

If I remember right, they discontinued the XMPCR about a year and a half ago
because of some software some guy created which allowed users to set the
XMPCR to not only record songs/programs from XM as individual MP3's, but to
tag them with ID3 tags as well. The creator mainly did this for the
concerts that used to air on XM Live, but the RIAA freaked out because they
figured this would lead to more music being available for file-sharing and
felt XM wasn't doing enough to protect copyrights and such.

For those who want to see what's playing though, go to www.xm411.com. The
MacroMedia Flash movie thing seems to be mostly accessible. I've used it
successfully.

On a sidenote, as an XM subscriber, I've suggested that they do like the DMX
Music service that was on my digital cable used to do...If you clicked on a
channel, it'd show a list of the last ten songs that had played on that
channel. Since then, Comcast has switched to Music Choice, whose site, last
time I checked, is pretty uninformative. For those who ARE XM subscribers,
I made my suggestion of showing the last ten songs on each channel to the
head of music programming, Jon Zellner...Very cool guy. If you're an XM
subscriber who uses a screenreader and would like to see this, either use
the contact links at xmradio.com, or email Mr. Zellner at

Zellner at

fans as E-Lo) at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

One thing to consider before buying one is if you can activate it
now. This may not be a problem at aall but something worth checking
on. I enjoy mine. It is the best designed digital radio for us if
it is satellite or any other of digital radio. They won't make the
others where we can see what song is playing.

 Hello,

An acquaintance wishes to buy an XM PCR. If one finds one in good
working condition, what should he be willing to pay for it?

I had heard that immediately after the manufacturer
discontinued making them, their value on Ebay shot way up but
subsequently returned to more normal levels. So what is such a
receiver worth now in U.S. dollars?

 Thanks.

I've since deleted it from my computer. That's what I was concerned
about, that it may contain spyware. Are there any alternatives?

Hi List,
Is it legal to use BiTorrent? does it work with Window-Eyes and JFW?
Is

that Program preferred to LimeWire? Do they work equally well? I have it
installed, but don't understand the next step. Please help!

Re: Debating on whether to get XM, some info needed

2006-04-29 Thread David Tanner
Your comments were great, but let me add just a few additional comments that
really impressed me over the 4 months that I have been using XM.

I baught the little Rodio cheapy just before Christmas at Best Buy and also got
the home kit. I payed a whole $18 for the radio with the car kit, and I
wondered how well it would really work. Well, I work in a 1 story building
with a metal roof. When I first got the radio I took it to work and hooked it
up in my cube, which was a good 25 feet from the closest window. After a
little experimentation I found that I could use the radio with no problems by
laying the little magnetic car antenna on top of the flipper in my cube.
Reception was usually fair to good. In late February my cube was moved to
where the wall of my cube is right next to a window, and now reception is
absolutely wonderful. The last week of February my wife and I drove all the
way from Minnesota (Twin Cities) to Orlando Florida. We had very little
problem loosing signal. We had some problems in southern Georgia heading north
on the way back, but after a bit of moving the antenna around we finally found
a place inside the van where we could put the antenna and get a signal with
very little interuption. Also, going through the mountains in Tennesee we had
a few problems, but we figured that was to be expected. Otherwise, it was
absolutely wonderful to have uninterupted access to the stations that we had
gotten use to listening to without having to constantly having to search the
dial to see if there was a station within range that was worth listening to as
we traveled. Using it while traveling it was also nice to check in with the
weather channel once in awhile to see how the weather was in the areas we were
going to be going through in the next few hours.

: Hi Kevin.
:
: Okay, let's see if I can help you...Others may have already, but here's my
: opinion.
:
: I'm on the bottom floor of a 3-story apartment building in Everett,
: Washington. With my home stereo, I have a MyFi hooked up, and my antenna on
: top of the stereo speaker which is on a wall next to a window...I have NO
: clue what direction it's facing, and I have a perfect signal. They say to
: point it south...I'll admit, I couldn't tell you what direction it's pointed
: in if my life depended on it.
:
: In my bedroom, I have the SkyFi with the SkyFi boombox...The antenna's kind
: of up against a wall, and my signal is great. The boombox I have (the
: DelPhi one) does have a headphone jack. Before I got the MyFi, this one was
: hooked up to my home stereo with an RCA plug plugged into the headphone jack
: of the boombox, and the two plugs plugged into the back of my stereo, and I
: had a great signal.
:
: We also have the car kit for the SkyFi installed in our van, and my wife and
: I get a great signal no matter where we are, even in the Cascades, heading
: to central Washington. The ONLY place I lose my signal is northbound on I-5
: near Fort Lewis, and even that loss is only a few seconds. We travel this
: route between Portland Oregon and Seattle quite a bit. For some reason, I
: have no signal issues going from Seattle TO Portland though.
:
: As far as the repeaters go, check out the message boards at www.xm411.com.
: I'm sure someone there would be happy to check the map for you and let you
: know abought the Raleigh-Durham area...In fact, there are plenty of
: subscribers on the boards from that area. Registration is free, and unlike
: xmfans.com, they don't have one of those Copy the text in the graphic
: annoyances from what I recall. And if they do, they'll be willing to help
: you around that. Unfortunately, calling XM's customer service might not be
: a great idea...Most of the reps I've talked to have tended to be in Canada
: or one of the Island nations, are not XM subscribers, and are not very
: helpful...Although, now that XM is available legally in Canada, this may
: have changed. You can call them at 800-967-2346.
:
: Hope that helps.

:
:
: Hi.
:
: With the recent discussion about XM on the list, I am seriously
: considering
: getting subscribed to it. I do have some questions that will influence my
: decision.
:
: First, how well do the repeaters work? I am in a basement apartment, and
: I'm not sure if my unit faces the right way. Assuming there is a repeater
: in my location, Raleigh, North Carolina, how good a signal should I
:
