I've not used pro tools, but it's the industry standard for recording.

I know of no pro recording studios that use a pc for audio or video eiditng.
This has been the case for as long as I go back knowing rec tech people, and
that was at least 1995.

Hi,

You can't convert midi to wav or mp3. All midi is is a set of musical
instructions that your soundcard works with.

You could use total recorder, or something like goldwave, turn on the what
you hear option in your soundcard's volume, and record it that way through
the soundcard.

much info they put on the label? It seems to me that too much info

Re: new Olympus recorders

2007-01-11 Thread Keith Gillard
Very interesting and well thought out device. I'd like to know how loud and
clear the integrated speaker is. Like every new device, it seems that you
can't get every thing you want. It is a shame that this device does not
have an SD card slot. These days, 1 GB of memory is minuscule and paying
and extra $50 for each memory upgrade from 256 to 1 Gb is almost laughable.

Sure the Milestone 311 is pricy but it does have a card slot, great clear
and loud sound as well as a long life rechargeable battery.

Still, I can't wait to road test this new device.

Cheers...Keith

Neal from the midi-mag mailing list is going to do a audio review of one of
these units when he gets it.

Here is the press release.

Three New Digital Audio Recorders for Note-Taking at Work, and
 Podcasts, Audio
Books and Music at Play

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., January 4, 2007 Olympus unveils three new
 DS-Series
digital voice recorders that bridge the gap between work and play. In
addition
to capturing audio of meetings, interviews and other critical
 information
expected of digital recorders, the new Olympus DS-30, DS-40 and DS-50 are
optimized
for downloading, listening to and creating podcasts. The new
 recorders' high
sound quality is also great for listening to audio books and music, making
   them the all-in-one audio device.

Software included with the devices makes downloading podcasts easy, and
 the
podcasts' contents are updated automatically each time the audio recorder
is
connected to or synchronized with a computer. Podcasts and
 other audio content
can be downloaded from any Web site. The new voice recorders are also
specifically designed to work with Audible.com, a leading online
 provider of
audio books and other spoken entertainment and information.

Olympus has done a fantastic job designing the new DS-Series, in
 particular the
voice guidance feature will have great appeal to both commuters and the
visually impaired community. This functionality is a great asset
 to anyone that
relies upon Audible for its audio programming, said Chia-Lin Simmons,
vice president Strategic Alliances, Audible, Inc. We are
 confident that the
combination of Audible's vast audio selection with Olympus, the technology
leader in digital voice recording, will be well received.

The voice recorders are also distinguished by a number of premium
 features,
including:

The highest sound quality in the Olympus line-up with the new
 XSHQ Remarkable
Stereo Sound Quality mode. The new DS-Series devices can record and play
audio
content up to 44.1 kilohertz (kHz), which is equal to the sound
 quality of most
CDs.
A convenient removable stereo microphone for recording high-quality
 digital
audio.
A Voice Guidance function that talks, confirming which settings have
 been
selected and helping visually challenged users to navigate the device.
Built-in memory from 256MB to 512MB to one gigabyte that enables
 amazingly long
recording times ranging up to 275 hours.
PC Link enables the recorders to connect to a PC via the
 included USB cable
for quick downloading of audio files to and from a computer. Our DS-Series
voice recorders have been used for years by professionals such as
 doctors and
lawyers to capture audio throughout their workday, said Andy Flagg,
director,
Sales and Marketing, Olympus Imaging America Inc. These new
 devices have moved
from the hospital and courtroom into their personal lives. With stereo
headphones and up to one gigabyte memory, the new devices are optimal
 for
holding virtual libraries of music, audio books and podcasts, as well as
the
   traditional voice recordings.

   Intelligent Stylish Design
These DS-Series recorders are sleek road warriors that can go anywhere
 to
capture audio for podcasts and interviews. As podcasters join the ranks of
lawyers,
doctors and other professionals who use voice recorders, they can
 rest assured
that they will have what it takes to get the job done. The new DS-Series
have microphones that can detach from their bodies and attach to a
 remote
controller (an optional accessory) to allow podcasters to clip the
DS-Series'
microphone onto a shirt or tie and record in high fidelity at the flip
 of a
switch. Recording in this unobtrusive manner with the recorder tucked away
in a pocket helps to keep an interviewee at ease, which in turn
 can lead to more
entertaining and informative podcasts.

Designed for optimal ergonomics with a high attention to detail,
 the recorders
feature a speaker for audio playback on the back, buttons for recording and
playback on the side, and easy-to-use arrow pads and buttons to
 navigate menus
on the front. Olympus even created a power on/off sliding switch so users
   wouldn't accidentally

RE: midi to wave/mp3

2007-01-11 Thread John Sanfilippo
There actually is a pay program midi to mp3 which does this very easily.
Only problem I've had with it is that it will clip the end of the sound.
So I suppose you can counter act this by recording extra space and some
unheard midi message such as a pedal up down a few seconds after the
actual sound stops. I haven't tried this and I haven't registered the
program.

I have no personal experience with ProTools, but from what I've read
here and elsewhere, even the most devoted aficionados of the Mac
admit with disappointment that Apple has not seen fit to make
ProTools, one of the most potentially valuable programs for the Mac,
accessible at all for the blind. I recollect no success stories of
anybody using the pc version successfully, and I would be surprised
if one could use it effectively in a course which is likely to
require you to make use of many of its features.

All midis clip at the end of the sound because it's just playing a set of
instructions. You could make it smooth by fading out the midi after
recording it to mp3 or playing the song live with a midi keyboard fading
the sound at the end.

Only problem I've had with it is that it will clip the end of the sound.
So I suppose you can counter act this by recording extra space and some
unheard midi message such as a pedal up down a few seconds after the
actual sound stops. I haven't tried this and I haven't registered the
program.

Hi,

You can't convert midi to wav or mp3. All midi is is a set of musical
instructions that your soundcard works with.

You could use total recorder, or something like goldwave, turn on the
what
you hear option in your soundcard's volume, and record it that way
through
the soundcard.

What this means is that if you take the original analog source, in this case

you suggested, cassette tapes, then transfer it to your PC to Wav and/or
then MP3, you will loose more sound quality then if you did the same

Bobcat,

Yes, the link you provided below works for me as well. Perhaps if you call
Creative, they might be able to tell you how to get that remote working with
Media Center. Another approach would be to purchase the Remote and receiver
separately which I think you can do. I know that if you do a search on
PriceWatch for Windows Media Center Remote, you should find places that sell
them along with the ir blasters.

One more approach is to simply use a wireless keyboard. You can use the
shortcuts already mentioned, and you can also change channels by simply
typing in the numbers.

Thanks for that keyboard info Rick. My computer didn't come with remote
capability, even though it came with Media Centre. My sound card, Creative
Audigy 4 Pro, came with a remote but I haven't been able to set it up to run
Media Centre so far.

BTW: The link didn't work for me as it was split up between lines. I
couldn't even do a normal copy and paste with it. I opened it in notepad
and removed the space that resulted when I copied it. Here it is again. I
hope it works without having to copy it since it is so long.

 Hi.

Here is a url that describes a ton of shortcut keys for media Center.
Although the page refers to Windows Vista, I was able to see that most of
the keys also apply to Media Center 2005 under Windows XP. The remote is
also quite useful and in many cases even easier than using the keyboard.

Re: Creating .pls and .m3u files

2007-01-11 Thread Dane Trethowan
That's not necessarely a simple method as I found out, depending on
what you're doing your content may not be put in order for your
playlists, you have to be careful with that one. If the file
structure you're using and directory tree is comprised of numbers
then you're fine as Winamp can work out the order of playlists from
that but if not? Well you could make a fine mess of things, I did
actually mention Winamp in my original reply to Peter's question.

On 12/01/2007, at 4:55 AM, Chris Skarstad wrote:

suggested, or you can also use Winamp, or Station Playlist Studio, or
any other program that generates m3u or pls playlists. I've never
been able to tell the difference between m3u and pls playlists though.

Olympus DS Series

2007-01-11 Thread petrakigianos-giasou
The first place I heard about this Olympus DS device was via a
podcast done for Blind Cool Tech. For those who purchase this
device I would like to know:
1. Is the voice guidance feature set to ON by default? I read
this feature can be turned off by sighted users.

2. It comes with software version 7. I hope the software is not
required. Just copy and paste the folders and files to the
device is good enough for us. The software is probably going to
be inaccessible - just my opinion.

The only thing missing with these devices is an expansion slot
for external cards like micro SD or SD.

In my opinion this is the greatest device for the blind if it is
what it is accessible with the voice guidance feature since
the Book Port because it is made for both sighted and blind
users the Olympus device.

I will support both Olympus and APH here.

Creating M3U playlists, further explanations etc.

2007-01-11 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ok, well I went through Winamp and the options for creating playlists
just in case I was missing something and I actually think that the
batch files I wrote in Take Command are easier.
take Command allows the user to write very powerful batch files which
can take user input etc, such is the case with mine which I'm happy
to distribute.
You run the batch file as you would with any other command say from
the run programmes option. You're typed in the path name to where the
files are that you want to make a playlist from, you hit enter and
the batch file does the rest. I'm looking at ways of having a
browse option incorporated into the batch file, only one thing you
need to do and that is get a version of Take Command onto your
system, I think its available from http://www.jpsoftware.com.
Now the second advantage of creating playlists this way, while I'm
sure allot of people use Winamp, not everyone does, I prefer to use
VLC myself these days (no, that's not the London talkback station)
smile, its the name of an open-source media player which is
compatible across all platforms including Windows, Mac Os10.x, LINUX
etc.

Good evening everyone;

Pardoning my ignorance here but with respect to the Ipod, do any audio
tracks that you want to listen to on said device have to be obtained via
Apples Itunes service or can generic MP3, WMA and other varieties of audio
files be transferred and successfully played in an Ipod?

Thanks all over the place and back,
Dennis

Hi all, the easiest way to do this, is if you have a turntable that
you
can set up close to your computer! You can either get an inexpensive
pre-amp that will boost the low level of a magnetic phono cartridge
and
equalize it correctly and feed the output of that pre-amp to the line
input of your sound card! Then, all you need is a sound editing
  program,
such as Gold Wave, or Groove Mechanic wich is designed for recording
vinyl! An alternative solution, if there is no way to get a turntable
  in
the same area as the PC, is if you already have a fairly good quality
stereo system, with a turntable and a cassette deck, you can first
  record
the vinyl LP's on to a good quality cassette and then, plug a cassette
deck into your PC's sound card and record that way! Since I have my
stereo system set up right here along with my computers, I just feed
my
main pc's second sound card into the tape monitor loop of my reciever,
  so
I can record anything that I wish onto the hard drive!

Re: new Olympus recorders

2007-01-11 Thread David Tanner
I searched on Google for Olympus ds-50 and one of the sites listed was Amazon.
I took the link and then ended up with a list of brands of digital recorders
that they carried in the camera department. Then I went to the listing of
Olympus recorders and there was a link there for the Olympus ds-50. I took
that link and got the whole description, and could have ordered it right on

EAudioBooks

2007-01-11 Thread Brandon Hicks
Hi all,
Recently, I've been looking for downloadable audio books. I've looked at
Audible, but they only appear to accept credit cards as payment. Since
it's a sure bet that none of the books I'm interested in would be in the
free section there, I'm wondering what other options are out there.
Are there any audio book sites that offer downloads of audiobooks that
can be paid for via debbit card, not credit, or a PayPal account? Or,
even better, that provide free audio books that have been written in the
past, say, 40 or 50 years?
I've seen a couple out there, but I lost my bookmarks when I moved to
the Acer and my Compaq is long gone, and I can't seem to find the sites
again. If any of you have stumbled on any such sites, please let me know.

Thanks
Brandon

Re: USB Sound Card Recommendation

2007-01-11 Thread Brent Harding
My turtle beach internal is supposed to have optical in and out. I'm not
sure what those connectors are like. I find 2 square things that stick out a
ways that feel like they have a tiny holl in the middle where a pin on a
cable might fit in. I wanted to use mine with my Iriver H120 mp3
player/recorder because my stereo mix is of real low quality for some reason
as compared to the speakers. I'd rather not have to deal with splitting the
speaker connection if I don't have to, but not sure what sort of cable to
get because the Iriver has a normal mini plug that supposedly can be
switched into optical mode.

 Hi all.

I'm looking for a recommendation of an external sound card.

I'm looking for an external sound card that can connect to my AV unit and
record from it using an Optical in socket. I'm also needing an Optical
 out
socket, so as to play files from my computer to my hi-fi. So it's
 important
that it has both Optical in and Optical out facilities. In addition, and
probably the most important, it should be accessible by screen readers,
 such
 as JAWS.

At present, I have a Creative SoundBlaster, Live, 24 bit external sound
card. Unfortunately, although this does have an Optical out, it only has
 a
 line in facility.

 Any advise very welcomed.

 Best wishes.

Subject: EAudioBooks

Hi all,
Recently, I've been looking for downloadable audio books.

Thanks
Brandon

Bugfix: MP3 VBR (lame)header bug fixed.
 Bugfix:
Source files were not always deleted when the Delete source file

 optimization
fixed. (now produces bit-to-bit exact sound quality as the official
 LAME 3.97 command
 line encoder)

with winamp, hit shift l if you want to add an entire folder.

if you just want to add songs, you can go through a folder, hit your
applications key, and tell it to queue it in winamp.

No options to go through, but if what you do works, then great. I'm merely
mentioning this for people who may not know how to create a playlist in
winamp.

VLC myself these days (no, that's not the London talkback station)
smile, its the name of an open-source media player which is
compatible across all platforms including Windows, Mac Os10.x, LINUX
 etc.

Chrome was 50-14000 Hz. Cds do better than that.

But, tape sounds horrible and has relatively poor frequency response, at
least as far as music goes. Talking cassette tape, btw. Of course
personally recorded, out of print, or tapes of books are a different
 story.

Hello Keith, go to http://www.tracertek.com and you will find a couple
 of
really
nice preamps you can use for hooking up the turntable to the computer.

 Hi,

 Good info,

Can you suggest a good little pre-amp that would work well with my
 JVC
 turn
 table?

BTW: How is Groove Mechanic for accessibility?

 Cheers...Keith

Hi all, the easiest way to do this, is if you have a turntable that
 you
can set up close to your computer! You can either get an inexpensive
pre-amp that will boost the low level of a magnetic phono cartridge
 and
equalize it correctly and feed the output of that pre-amp to the line
input of your sound card! Then, all you need is a sound editing
  program,
such as Gold Wave, or Groove Mechanic wich is designed for recording
vinyl! An alternative solution, if there is no way to get a
 turntable
  in
the same area as the PC, is if you already have a fairly good quality
stereo system, with a turntable and a cassette deck, you can first
  record
the vinyl LP's on to a good quality cassette and then, plug a
 cassette
deck into your PC's sound card and record that way! Since I have my
stereo system set up right here along with my computers, I just feed
 my
main pc's second sound card into the tape monitor loop of my
 reciever,
  so
I can record anything that I wish onto the hard drive!
