Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please?
I really think a lot of the antenna placement depends on location. I'm in central Iowa, and I have one antenna which sits atop our kitchen cupboard, pointing straight up. The other is on our deck, southwest side of the house, again pointing straight up. Each person needs to experiment and see what is best for them. Larry, I don't think that you are going to find a satellite receiver with speech output. The particular unit that I have is pretty straight forward, and the buttons are raised and are in a straight row at the bottom of the unit. They appear as little dots that are easy to feel. There are long bar type buttons on the front panel off to the left that perform other functions, and on the boombox itself there is a cluster of raised buttons; volume up, volume down, off, and mute. When you change channels you hear a little beep that tells you that you are indeed changing channels. The Source has this particular unit on sale for I believe to be $129. This of course, does not include the boombox that the unit clips into. This is a good unit for people with low vision, as the faunt on the display window can be changed. Ideally it would be nice to have a unit that would tell you verbally what song is playing. I am wondering if a speech device could be hooked up to the unit to read out the information on the display window. I think that it is dooable. This would be similar to the device that reads out the frequencies on ham radio equipment. - Original Message - From: Larry N [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2007 10:10 PM Subject: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please? Replay AV List
The recent discussion concerning Replay Av 8.30 prompts me to mention that there exists a discussion list oriented for screen reader users of this truly fantastic and speech friendly program. To subscribe, send a msg to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and in the subject line, type subscribe I have no vested interest in the list other than liking to see more participants which would lead to greater sharing of information. The program's url finder feature in and of itself is more than worth the $50 or so pricetag for the program in my estimation. And even if you never recorded a show or station, the ability to combine one's audio streams under a single umbrella may too make it worth the price for many. And, of course, you get the recorder to boot grin!! Anyway, the subscription address, once again, is [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word subscribe in the subject line. Annoying static in recording
Hi, gang! I recently recorded a great conversation using an R09 and external mikes. I think the battery was low, which might be why there was this static throuout the recording. In any case, is there any software that can at least cut down on some of that static? It's not hiss. It's almost as if there was that kindof static you get when a mike jack is on the fritz, but mercifully I haven't had that problem since. Would Soundforge (the full version which we don't have yet) or Goldwave or something like that help? Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please?
Ideally you want to try out the store demo in order to get a feel as to how the unit will work for you. . Once you become accustomed to the button configuration you shouldn't have any difficulty in operating the unit. As mentioned in a previous post the buttons on most of the Sirius receivers are raised making navigation a breeze. In doing my research on satellite receivers a year or so ago, I found the XM receivers to have square flush mount buttons making the unit very streamline. The buttons on the XM radio that I saw were very much like the buttons that you find on the latest models of cell phones. flush mount to the faceplate of the unit. The XM units may have changed considerably since then. You will just have to check it out for your self. When it comes to programming it is six of one and a half dozen of another. Then there are the subscription fees that one has to deal with. I have the two year plan with Sirius, but will probably opt out for the lifetime membership plan. You pay once and forget about it. . . . . . . - Original Message - From: Larry N [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: PC Audio Discussion List pc-audio@pc-audio.org Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2007 1:52 PM Subject: Re: Accessible Sirius Receiver Suggestions Please? Captchas Re: Winamp Question
I know this is a bit late, but something Chris said got me thinking...I notice Winamp's forums are powered by vBulletin. I've also noticed, for about six years now, the ANYTHING powered by vbulletin has the captcha code associated with sign-up. I've found three lists (two Opie and Anthony fan lists and the Orbitcast forums) who are willing to assist blind/visually impaired users in signing up. However, most of the vBulletin powered lists don't give an email address to contact the forum owner or an audio alternate to the captcha. So, what I'm wondering is, is this something each forum owner can set up on his/her own, or is this something whoever is in charge at vBulletin would have to set up for each forum? The first time I ever ran into it was signing up for the message board at megadeth.com back in like July of 2001. Part of me thinks the Winamp guys would be willing to add an audio alternative, but it makes me think maybe vBulletin's software just isn't set up to handle such things, and that they need to be made aware of the problem and asked/nudged to fix it. --- Visit me on Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/wesderby Now, I actually remember to log in and check it! I know this is a couple days late, but sometimes that does happen. But the important thing is this. The very best way to solve the problem is to try to contact the developers, send them some info about your error message and anything else that might be necessary. The best advice any of us here on any of these lists can give you is to just uninstall and re-install but as you said, it doesn't seem to help. Most of the developers seem to hang out at the Winamp forums located at http://forums.winamp.com Unfortunately they still appear to be using a captcha system which doesn't appear to have an audio alternate *make note to self to write to them about that* but if you ask them via e-mail and explain your reasons for wanting to sign up to report a problem, you will hopefully get some help. But that really is the best way to report a major bug like that, if it had to do with screenreaders we could approach the vendors and ask for help but since this seems like it's a Winamp only thing, then the forums are probably your best way to go. Hope that helps. At 01:44 PM 10/9/2007, you wrote: Hi. Re: New release of GoldWave 5.22.
Are there scripts that work with it or is it pretty good out of the box. I only use the scripts because I like some of the extra feedback. Thanks. Re: Captchas Re: Winamp Question
Hey Wes I did a bit of checking, and you might try sending a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and explain the whole captcha issue and hopefully, someone will get back to ya. Speaking of which I did get your e-mail here about my list so i'll get back to ya about that as well. Thanks man. I've also noticed, for about six years now, the ANYTHING powered by vbulletin has the captcha code associated with sign-up. Free download of 2nd Speech Center
I received this from a professional email list I am a part of. It is another text-to-speech program which is free for today only. See below Jeff Samco Nevada City, California Forwarded Message I just found out that www.giveawayoftheday.com has 2nd Speech Center as its free download today. 2nd Speech is a text reading software program that does a pretty good job. It will read documents, email, internet, etc. GiveAwayoftheDay.com gives one application and one game away free daily. There is no charge, no registration but you must install the program and activate it the same day you download it. The program is free because you get no upgrades and no technical support. but it's free. I've gotten lots of great programs and games from this site. You have to hurry for 2nd Speech Center as there is only 10 hours or so left to download and install it.
