Cool Edit was a multi-track editor (it was bought by Adobe and became Audition.) Seems Cool Edit 2000 is still on some old software lists and can be downloaded. No idea whether it just works as an evaluation or its the real thing. I know some people used to use Cool Edit successfully. Some are

Hi All, Can you turn on cueing in adoobe 1.5 so you cn here what you are selecting? I have seen in Soundforge where you can press the letter q. then You can hold down the left shift key while pressing the right arrow. As you move across the audio file, you can hear what you are selecting..
