Re: mp4 files

2011-06-12 Thread JM Casey
Sorry, didn't see this part. Yes, winamp will play mp4 files going back to
I-don't-know-what version. I have version 5.61 my self, which I believe is
the latest. I don't believe goldwave will handle mp4s "out of the box", but
there may be a plugin...

Hello.

I can't check right at the moment, but i'm pretty sure the latest version
of Audacity can handle mp4 files. You might have to download an extra
decoder plugin, but that should be readily available.

Re: mp4 files

2011-06-12 Thread JM Casey
You shouldn't need an extra plugin to play mp4s for any new version of
winamp, though if I understood the question, it was about converting the
files, and not playing them

Audacity is free.

I use Switch in windows to convert MP4 files to MP3 files.

I Googled Winamp and MP4, and it looks like you can play MP4 files with
winamp, although you may need a plug in. Have you tried this yet? I only
spent a few seconds doing this. I suspect you could figure it out by
spending just a few minutes with Google.

You can find out more about file extensions in general using Google, but
one site I found was http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/mp4, where it
says the following:

(Note that I cleaned this up a little bit, but I apologize for the
formatting. You may have a better result by just following the link
above or doing your own search in Google.)

File Description Movie or video clip that uses MPEG-4 compression, a
standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG); commonly
used for sharing video files on the Internet.

The MPEG-4 video format uses separate compression for audio and video
tracks. Video is compressed with MPEG-4 video encoding. Audio is
compressed using AAC compression, the same type of audio compression
used in .AAC files.

MP4 files are supported by many video programs and various hardware
devices, including the Microsoft Zune portable media player.

Re: To all Total Recorder tutorials

2011-06-12 Thread Larry Higgins
I think within the setup for background recording, there is a way to
test/play a stream to see if it works. I don't know how one could
possibly make sure a scheduled item would actually run unless you set
it up to record within the next few minutes, then afterward, editing
the entry to run at a later date or hour.

If you set the recording option in TR to Software, it load Winamp,
which actually plays the stream in question right through your sound
card. The audio is captured from the sound card, not from the stream
packets themselves. I know this is true by two proofs. 1. If you use
Winamp's down- and up-arrow volume buttons while recording a stream in
Total Recorder, when you play the stream back that you just recorded
while manipulating those buttons, the volume of the stream will, in
fact, go down, then up again. 2. If you record a short stream with
WGet (or, in my case, WinWGet, because I like wrappers), and then
compare that recording with another short stream from the same source
using TR+Winamp methodology, if your ears are good, which mine are not
but I've been told this by more than one person with far, far better
ears than my broken ones, you'll notice that the TR+Winamp version of
the recorded stream has artifacts that the WGet stream does not. I
suspect these artifacts are from digital audio being converted to
analog, played through the sound card, then re-encoded by TR. Like I
said, personally I cannot hear these artifacts any more, but I believe
they are there and I believe the reason for their existence is as
explained. If TR has a way of getting around this, I'd dearly love to
know how it's done. That would make my weekly captures of various
radio programs sound so-o much better.

Reaper Tutorial

2011-06-12 Thread Steve Matzura
I downloaded and listened to the Reaper tutorial given via what
appeared to be Teamtalk that was posted here recently. Brilliant stuff
all around! I finally learned how to do things with it that I only had
heard were possible but had no idea how to do. I just wish that
whoever made that MP3 would have added some metadata to indicate who
produced it and how to get in touch with them should anyone have
questions, which I do have one of, although it's not specific to
Reaper. I want to know, where do all you brilliant mix-masters and
masher-uppers go to get your source material? I've found a couple
sites that specialize in grist for the mashup and remix mills--that
being raw instrumental and vocal tracks--but they're almost always by
these independent artists of which I have never heard. Now, I profess
no great knowledge of music past, say, 1985, but I do hear modern
radio and I do recognize some of the names and some of the musics it
produces, but I've never seen any site that has breakups of songs I
recognize. Where do folks go to get this stuff?

Re: A strange request

2011-06-12 Thread Steve Matzura
That has the same eq issues as resampling, but at least the only thing
that will be bad about either the analog or digital solution is the
record noise will be wrong. If you play something at double speed and
record it flat, no equalization additions or subtractions, when you
halve the playback speed, everything should be perfect. I've been
recording and reading talking books just this way for 40 years. The
record surface noise eq is wrong when slowed down, but who cares?
You're interested in the content, not the background noise, and the
content eq will be properly preserved.

Yep, it does work exactly that way -- I don't know what you were looking
at.

RE: winamp problem

2011-06-12 Thread Quinten Pendle
Hi Joe

Try the following:
Inside winamp, hit control +p for preferences and use your arrow keys to
find the general category. Once there, tab until you reach a checkbox that
says "check for new winamp version at startup" and uncheck it.
This should solve the problem.
Hope this helps.

All the best
Quinten Pendle
