I have a piece of audio that runs about three minutes or so. The first 45 seconds or so should be played at normal level, then a quick duck of about 12dB over maybe two seconds, then the rest of the audio should remain at the lower level for the rest of its duration. How in the world is this done

It's definitely a Gold Wave bug. The fact is, when you choose a format for recording, that format should automatically be the default when you save it. In fact, it shouldn't even be required to ask you for it, for if you wanted the recording saved in something else, you would have made it in that
