Re: [PD] creating an engaging interactive art in public space

2011-04-07 Thread Adityo Pratomo
oh wow, this is so complete, thank you for answering Simon. Have you done
this kind of installation before? After some digest, I think you're right,
the key is to create something easy to understand and interesting for both
the audience and the performer. You nailed the key point here.

Thank you very much :)

Looking at only the public space + interactive part of the question (so not
considering general things to consider in making work for an audience .. or
in making something interactive, or placing a work in a public space) ...

Some choices I would probably make ...

  - I would want to ensure there was no need to explain to an audience that
interaction is possible and desirable, and to use the interactive-ness of
the installation to provoke a desire to explore and discover. This is
certainly not the only kind of interactive installation I would be
interested in, but it would be my first impulse.

  - The work must either invite or provoke the sort of activities that
create a recognisable response in its 'resting' state, or should be devised
in such a way that visitors to the space doing the common things in that
space provide the required input. These are two very different approaches
and lead to very different kinds of work, both are interesting to me.

  - The interactive-ness should be noticeable by a casual visitor, and the
methods and logic of that interaction should be able to be worked out by an
engaged audience member through the kinds of exploration invited by the
special qualities of the installation and the particular habits and rules of
the public space it has been placed in. It is important to remember that
only some will engage in this way, and that the work should not depend on
this way of engaging but it should certainly allow for it. Confusing or
inconsistent behaviour is certainly a possibility, as a conscious choice of
the artist and followed through properly, but is hard to make work.

  - The kind of engagement with the interactivity which is playful more than
 analytical should be rewarding.

  - The work should also be engaging for an audience member that is more
passively observing while others interact. That is I would keep in mind that
the interaction is only part of the work, and that quite often a passer-by
will be engaged by the work because of the interaction with someone else.

  - Interactivity presents the opportunity to give a work a strong sense of
being alive, and of building a heightened sense of connection with the
space. The moment a visitor notices the responsiveness is very important, it
can be the start of some kind of narrative or journey, or some kind of
surprise which shifts the way the public space is perceived, or ...

There is a lot more to say, it is a very big topic!

[PD] creating an engaging interactive art in public space

2011-04-04 Thread Adityo Pratomo
hi there everyone

Just a normative non-technical question here. I was wondering how would you
guys create an engaging interactive art piece for a public space? I was just
doing a casual internet browsing the other day, looking at various
interactive art in public space, then suddenly that question popped up. I
think that art in public space is very much different with one on gallery or
museum, because people won't have that mind set of actually having an
interaction with an art piece. If so then, what are your strategies to
create one? Are you assuming that people or passer-by will automatically
react to that interactive art? Or is there anything else?

Thank you guys, have a great day :D

Cheers,

Adityo

Yes, a proper PD workshop. Good for you guys :D As a proud Indonesian PD

of PD as a creative tool for artist.

Anyway Hans, thank you for making a possibility of localizing PD, might be
helpful in the long run

there are still some colorspace issues on mac OSX,
actually it's not RGBA, it's GRAB, due to some endianness issues...
mm, we could fix it if we really had any mac OSX but we don't ( lluis and
 me,
lluis's one died and i never had one ).

  2. does the images and the video from webcam has the same size (320x240 in
 your help file)

it's not a requisite, the object should be intelligent enough to detect any
 sizes.

  3. does the referenced image have to appear in the gemwin? Can it be
resized to a smaller size? I see that in the video that you give, the
referenced image appears in a small size in the corner of the screen, howdid
 you do it?

well, analyse the patch it's just with a separator,
a translate -2 or +2 and two rectangles,
if you don't want it, just remove one rectangle
( and all its branch ).

other than those, this object works like a charm. absolutely gorgeous.
your the master, hands down :)

the real work is in opencv here..
 so thanks to them.

 Hi All,

I'm currently working with my sister for a project that will involve
creating a simple remix tool, in which a song will be played, and the user
can create additional sounds on top of that song, recording it and thus
create his/her own version of the song. I've done with the basic of the
tool, it's now operational. However, I have some questions:

 1. Can I load an mp3 file? I use readsf~ and I think it can only read wav
 and aiff file
 2. Can we create a graphical front end using HTML? Or are we restricted to
GrIPD to create a more informative graphical front end? If so, can grIPD
work on Mac OSX, beacuse it's the OS that we're working in, and the GrIPD
website don't show any information of installing it in Mac OSX.

Many thanks for your help :)

 Regards,

 Didit

[PD] play mp3 file and create graphical front end interface

2010-06-10 Thread Adityo Pratomo

The FFT that's being displayed in GEM is a fairly narrow range, but I don't

Also the scope seems to miss beats quite a lot, even those that are

Re: [PD] Pd, Max/Msp, Reaktor, Plogue Bidule... How do these compare?

2010-03-16 Thread Adityo Pratomo
Sorry for bringing this old thread up, I find Alex's opinion very
interesting. Actually I kinda feel that using Pd, I'm stuck in the process
of making the instrument instead of the music kinda situation.Even though
at first, I can custom made an instrument specific to what I want, I ended
up exhausted at building the instrument first, and find myself resting for
several moments before finally finishing a composition.

I recently tried Reaktor, and one thing that's best is the interface, that
features definitely makes me interested in learning deeper into this tool. I
also tried Max/MSP, and yes I love the interface, kinda more engaging to
patch things. I also recently acquired Launchpad, (with all the monome
emulations build using Max/MSP, I become slowly adapt to it). But either
way, I kinda stuck with Pd because this is the first audiovisual environment
programming that I know and dig. So, I think, probably it will all go down
to which tool we are comfort with (ugh, sounds so diplomatic, hate it).

But anyway, I feel that Max/MSP produce a smoother audio than Pd, is it me
or does anyone feel this too?

 hi,
 Here are MY thoughts:

As a composer attending composition courses in brazilian universities I was
presented with the idea that MAX was professional and stable. and pd
experimental and unstable. Another given point is that MAX had some
wonderful capabilities that Pd might never, giving the sense that you can
only do some sorts of thing in MAX. But that is some load of BS in my
opinion (I know you didn't see that coming... shocking, huh?).

when it came for me to decide which to study and where to implement my
research. It felt logical to go for a free environment, meaning that I'd be
able to show results and present knowledge in a free way, and one wouldn't
need to buy a software to able to check my study. But this seems more of an
issue here in Brazil, as in some places people don't bother with the cash
 issue, and got MAX everywhere.

But in Brazil, most MAX users go for the pirate version, and if you hope
for stability, what is the point in that?

The CA$H issue is greatly pertinent in this discussion, but it gets deeper
than that. The way I see it, and you have put it in your email, is that Pd
and MAX are in fact more powerful, and you need quite a knowledge to be able
to design stuff. Reaktor and Bidule are easier for that matter.

So my point is, it is too important that you really know what you are
doing. You need to study DSP for christ's sake, know exactly how FFT works,
or even Wavelets! You also need to really work hard and practice it as an
instrument to be able to develop patching techniques in Pd or MAX.

They are great Do it yourself environments, and now I ask, what is the
point of spending a lot here? It seems reasonable for me to pay for other
people to do the work for you. If this was cooking, I would pay for a chef
to cook for me, and not spend a lot to make the meal myself...

At least here in Brazil, I haven't seen people doing great and highly
sophisticated MAX patches that would justify it being a more powerful tool.
And i dont really use it to know myself whatever there is to it besides the
friendlier interface and customer support. And i haven't had trouble not
being able to use Pd in my Computer Music projects. I also have the idea
that Pd is simpler and more straight to the point, and that MAX is heavier
to run and has all sorts of gadgets that are there more to justify the
investment, but that end up making it more confusing for me.

It gets to a point where is rather paradoxal to me, you have a do it
yourself environment trying to be an end-user end oriented tool.

Now, Reaktor and Bidule are not that powerful and more straightforward into
some direction. This makes them more specific tools and easier to use, and I
see now the point of paying for those. they are more headed torwards
end-users, and they are kind of cooking for them.

Another issue comes to aesthetics. Being a free software community, stuff
made in Pd or by Pd people tends to be more anarchic and somewhat
standard-free. MAX, on the other hand, seems to be highly inserted into this
really specialized niche of the traditional Computer Music environment.
After all, it is something that comes from IRCAM, so it is natural that the
aesthetic of MAX users usually tend to look as something related to IRCAM's
school, and that kind of standard.

But then, being a composer dealing with computer music is hard because you
need to be both a composer and a computer science guy. The way around is
making partnerships, and people in IRCAM actually do partnerships. So, if
you are a composer, you need to compose and that is it... you give the
computer stuff to a computer guy and let him bother with it in the way he
wants. Philippe Manoury is a composer

Re: [PD] life as a new media artist

Hmm, I see. Looks like we have to have a day job right? Just curious, is
there anyone have a day job in a field that has no relation with art? Like
for example, I myself, I work as a network consultant. And then use my spare
time to do some art stuff.

well, my question would be very simple this time. Is there anyone here

financially funding your project while still gaining money for personal

Re: [PD] how to deploy PD in a server?

2009-08-12 Thread Adityo Pratomo
@adityo: it really depends on what you need. obviously, if Pd is running on
the server, the audio will be generated on the server as well, so people
might not hear anything (unless they happen to sit in the server room)
if it is just about listening to a patch of yours, the traditional approach
would involve running Pd on the server and streaming the audio to an
icecast2 (or similar) streamingserver to which people can connect in order
 to hear the stream.
if you want more interactivity, you can use http/php/xmlrpc/irc/... to
communicate with Pd (using [netreceive] or similar), so people can change
 parameters.

so basically by using [netreceive] and php i can deploy Pd in a server, and
then people can use their own client (without installing Pd) to play with
the parameters? Is this what you're trying to say?

To light things up, i read that Processing can be deployed as a Java in a
website, so browser with a Java plugin can actually see the work done with
Processing. I'm just curious, is this can also be applied in Pd, without
actually rewrite Pd as a Java code?

Thank you in advance

[PD] how to deploy PD in a server?

2009-08-03 Thread Adityo Pratomo
Hi there folks,

Does anybody now whether can PD be deployed in a server and then anybody can
login into that server and run PD without have to install PD on the client
side? What are the requirements for this? I understand that there's NetPD, i
haven't read much about it, buat isi this sufficient? Because i am thinking
about making music using PD and then run the abstraction and patches on a
server, so anyone who want to hear it can just login to the server. Is it
possible?

Thank you very much

[PD] Embedd Pure Data in BASIC Stamp?

2009-04-10 Thread Adityo Pratomo
Hi there everybody

I just founded out that I have a BASIC Stamp board lying in my house, and I
start to think about starting a project that involve this board. But the
problem is can Pd actually be embedded in a BASIC Stamp? Or if not, can it
be embedded in an ARduino board? I've noticed that there's PdA (Pure Data

Thank you all :)

Both the Stamp and the Arduino have insufficient program memory to run Pd,
even with no gui. They are best suited for I/O with a serial connection to
 Pd via [comport].
Also the Stamp can't wait for serial input while doing some other task, so
it works better as an input device.
The Stamp is much slower than the Arduino since it must interpret Basic
tokens at runtime while the Arduino directly executes the machine code
resulting from compiling a higher level language.

So if your project involves something like reading sensors or activating
motors or lights, they are both good for that, whether or not you have some
higher level of control or display implemented on a desktop/laptop.

[PD] (Ask) Master Degree in New Media Arts

2009-04-07 Thread Adityo Pratomo
Hi there everyone.

I want to ask, can anybody give me information about universities that give
a master degree in new media arts, probably those that similar with MIT
Media Lab. I've just graduated with a bachelor degree in electrical
engineering, and in my final assignment, I create some kind of installation
using Arduino and Pd. After that, I feel very eager to continue studying
about this new media art field. So can anybody tell me where should i go?
Any information will be appreciated.

Thank you very much everybody!

Cheers

[PD] questions about Firmata and [arduino]

2008-09-08 Thread Adityo Pratomo
Hi there everyone. Lately i've been working with an arduino board loaded
with the firmata firmware and then i use the [arduino] object to read the
input from the sensor that connected to the board's input port. For the
firmware, i choose to upload the simple_digital_firmata code from the
Library-Firmata example. And everything just went well. After some
examination, i made an assumption that this code is actually doing the
almost same thing done by the [arduino] object.

So my questions are is my my assumption true? if so, is the firmata code is
used by the arduino board so that it can communicate with the computer, and
the [arduino] object will maps those I/Os from the board to the pd? Actually
what does the [arduino] object does when it's started up for the first time?
The last question is Why can't i get the [arduino] board to respond when i
upload the standard_firmata code?

Thank you so much every body, sorry for the long questions, i'm so curious
here :)

have you tried to click that command? You may find some help file about that

help, it might be helpful. As far as finding the list of available command,
i can't help it, i still search it manually on the Pd folder :)

Maybe (probably?) there is a more elegant / OpenGL-native way, but I'd
make a cube out of 6 [square]s with appropriate transformations.
 [separator] would be useful here.

the more elegant way would be UV-mapping, where you put all 6 sides in
one texture and then apply it to the 3d object. but GEM does not support
 that.

 So that when i

should use [pix_image] and [pix_texture] but how can i achieve my

[PD] problems with PIR and Firmata

2008-08-12 Thread Adityo Pratomo
hi there everybody, i have a question about the PIR in firmata. I'm
connecting a PIR sensor to an ardunio board and then programming it on Pd
using the Firmata firmware. Then, the input from the PIR sensor will detect
any motion and any voltage output will be used to trigger a bang. But i have
a problem, i guess the sensor will trigger the bang twice, since the output
from the sensor change twice from a single motion. The question is how can i
make the bang only react from the first trigger and then ignores the second
trigger. I've used the delay routed to number 0, but it's useless since
there's no exact time when the second trigger will occur. Any idea
everybody.

And when i debug the firmata, for every single detected output, i have a
message like these

DEBUG: 144
DEBUG: 4
DEBUG: 0
DEBUG: 144
DEBUG: 4
DEBUG: 0
DEBUG: 144
DEBUG: 0
DEBUG: 0
DEBUG: 144
DEBUG: 0
DEBUG: 0

can anybody tell me what these messages means? is my system working
correctly?

many thanks in advance.
