Re: [PD] GEM causes sound glitches
Hey IOhannes, List Sorry for the late reply, I was in holidays. No problem, I just wanted to be direct concerning a problem that has been affecting the nice work that you do (I am aware of all you work and I am really grateful for this, more about this in the end of this email). And in order to improve the work I would like to continue to be direct :-). So, some other observations about my experience with glitches: I made all tests you suggested in the last months working with 2 complex projects. I've read everything concerning glitches in PD and I was working in OSX machines i5 and i7, m-audio interfaces and jack: - The problem appears even in simple operations with of GEM objects combined with audio - Computational power seem to hide the problem. If you share the power with other software the problems appear again. - Increasing buffer size works in some cases but it is basically the same case of the computer power If you want to listen to the glitches look at the first minute of this earlier version of a project installation we delivered in August. I've minimized glitches using an i7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9Kvts3KWQ4 I will try to provide a minimum example patch, soon. Concerning my gratitude with people in this list: I finished my PhD in 2011 and returned to Brazil. I spend 2 years trying to validate in Brazil, fighting against corruption in the university, trying to get a job (who wants to give a job to a PhD with papers, prizes, etc?) and health problems in my family. The best way I found to keep my duties with my son and normal life was to work as independent artist. Half of my income during these two years came from projects or workshops using PD. After being criticized and isolated in my reserach department because I was using a difficult, free and not so documented software (words from my colleagues) PD provided me very nice work possibilites back home and means to keep my moral high. I am really grateful for the community and although I am not always present here I keep spreading the word and working hard. All the best, a great 2014 for everybody and thanks for everything. (this reads as if my contributions (as this is what you are mainly talking about) to Pd do not meet professional standards and/or make Pd unfit for professional work...which i find slightly insulting myself). as for design problems: i really don't think that this was an insult. design problems creep in everywhere. personally, i have loads of them, so i find myself redesigning and refactoring things all the time...and i don't think that this is a bad thing per se. so please accept my terse comment as a simple: every now and then you should rethink your design. as for help: you *can* help solving any problem, even without being an expert in C++ and multimedia frameworks (dan has pointed out some ways). this is the way of open source: you don't have to be microsoft or apple to contribute to problems. gfrdsa IOhannes PS: probably the most constructive remark in my email was in the meantime, raise the audio buffer of Pd. depending on your patch, this *is* likely to solve your problem at least partially, so you shouldn't just discard it (as being yet another snide remark in an unfriendly email). ___ Pd-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list -- Luiz Naveda _ - PhD researcher http://www.ipem.ugent.be/samba - Director SysMus09 http://www.ipem.ugent.be/sysmus09 IPEM - Institute for Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music Ghent University Office: + 32 9 264 4127 Blandijnberg 2 Ghent, B-9000 Belgium ^v^ ^v^ ^v^ ^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~~^~~^~^~^~~~^^~^ ^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~~^~~^~~^~^~^~~~^~~~ ___ Pd-list@iem.at mailing list UNSUBSCRIBE and account-management - http://lists.puredata.info/listinfo/pd-list
Re: [PD] GEM causes soung glitches
Iohannes, I am very sad to listen these words from you. I am just trying to point to a problem that I feel is important: making sound and work with gem causes glitches in several scenarios. It is a main problem for me and for some people I know. I accept that you think I am not a professional as you are and I also accept that I have all sort of design problems. No problem. But we have a problem here. I am just trying to wave the priority. I cant help solving the problem directly. My programming skills are not so good. But if you want I can do other tasks, try to raise money, I dont know. How do I start? I would like to ask you, in a very kind way and very friendly. Re: [PD] Nikon DSLR Capture with Pd
Hi there, Some time ago I made a system using pd + arduino to trigger my Pentax via infrared at specific time points. The goal was to take shots of paper objects jumping in a paper bed attached to a speaker. It is part of a series of studies of paper design and photography. See some photos here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dlbh1642r4h0vtj/f-k8i1R23f (and work here http:// paperdesign.naveda.info) It didn´t work well because there were hidden delays in the chain from PD to the Infrared led ...and the speaker was driven by pulses around 10 hz. I don't know if the patch is useful but the arduino code was based on the code from: http://sebastian.setz.name/arduino/my-libraries/multi-camera-ir-control/ So, if you have no problems with latency, just build a arduino-pd system (see pduino), get an infrared led and have fun! Re: [PD] Pd-0.40.3-extended and Pd-0.39.3-extended on 10.5 Leopard
Hello, 8-( Leopard updated. Pd still crashing... This can be a really idiot question, but I was reading the comment abut Miller's version and thinking, why PD-extended is not a really an extension of PD? Like a module? Why it must be a complete package? If it is only the help integration, why not develop a support engine in separate? Register new libraries is not so difficult. If this question is really idiot, please ignore... Luiz On Nov 16, 2007 8:09 PM, marius schebella [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: that sounds promising. Re: [PD] sound annotation
Yes, it is possible with pd... But I think this would be useful if you need something like a list of words to work with the labels in realtime or any other especial application. There are good pieces of software to do this task for analysis. Re: [PD] next conv in Brasil... meaning business
Hey Everybody, Sorry for the late reply. I really would like to work to a PD conference in Brazil. I am from Belo Horizonte (UEMG-UFMG-FUMEC) and my background is music performance, analysis, acoustics psychoacoustics, mediation technology, guitar, PD, Eyesweb, origami arquitecture... I love Macs, I work in a PC...I love PD but I work also with Matlab... I love Samba but I am working in the academic world... It is difficult this task to be subversive into the enemy's field ! 8-) I have experience with projects in Brazil (FAPEMIG, FINEP, research) and I can help with contacts, writing the project, finding money and support. I worked also in projects related with music education content for computer aided education and I know what the funding agencies want to read Let's be practical: (We can put subjects like free software, 3rd world and information, art/show/science/resistance actions into the conference timetable!) Who decides where will be the conference? What we have to provide in order to be a serious option? Who is pointing to São Paulo (must be there?)? Where is the PD community of Brazil? Who are the Brazilians or Pd users active in this proposition? We need a specific list. Best! Luiz On 9/10/07, Ed Kelly [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey alex, good to see you in Montreal, I think the small things happen all the time, at least that's what we strive for I hope. Meanwhile, the big thing can happen too in 2009. One thing I think would be a really good idea is if there is some kind of map around when things happen - the conferences always happen at about the same time every year. I've been at the ICMC twice now and I intend to go again, but that's always the last week of August or first week of September (for example). Really, conferences are far too short -- and busy. If we can find a two-week window in the international conference schedule (ISMIR. ICMC. Pris Ars Electronica, NIME etc) then we could do it then. Balancing this, those of us who have academic commitments need the summer to finalize our work, often, so maybe late July/Early August would be a good time? But---this is two years away. We still need to be precise about it though, because funding agencies are keen to have timetables/schedules etc. And I was gutted I didn't go to the party...but I'd love to see you all in Sao Paulo in two years time... And as I said, it's nice to have some local meetings before an international one... and the goal must be gathering people! Users, whatever... like you described. It's better to organise the schedule so that people organised in one thing aren't likely to be interested in the other thing that happens at the same time hmmm, yeah, the event in Montreal could be much longer if things werent all at the same time... We could have here a longer event. If it is smaller, things could be not simultaneous... one way or another, there should be plenty space and material for a Convention here...
