On Linux many Window Managers like Blackbox support resizing through other operations as well. In Blackbox I can Alt-Rightclick anywhere into a window to resize it freely. Maybe OS-X has some similar hotkeys? I think these operations are very useful especially in Pd to quickly resize (sub)patches without having to search and hit the window border exactly. Unfortunately, this isn't the case as far as I've known. It's one of my primary gripes about OSX's otherwise beautiful interface.
