It's the amount of data the camera can handle before it has to write
some of it to the Flash memory. You take one shot at a time and buffer
size isn't relevant but take 6 quick ones and you'll see why it's an
issue...

Yep, get the highest mah rating you can. Make sure you get batts which
are rated as OK for fast charging too, if you get a fast charger.
If you want to shoot RAW then go for no less than 1Gb in my opinion. As
Alex says 512 is fine for jpgs.
I can wholeheartely recommend the Lexar 1Gb cards.
