We're just about to enter yard sale season around here, and I figure I can pick up quite a few bargains in the way of backdrops and props. I never thought about using dyes, but that is a great idea and quite a bit cheaper than latex paint, to boot. Thanks for the tips, John & Bruce! -- Walt

Keep in mind what David Hobby (The Strobist) often does with a background: gaffer tapes it to a wall. No stand required. Don't be tempted to use duct tape -- you shouldn't need to ask why. :-) I mentioned the backdrop thing to an artist friend and she said it's fairy easy to create random mottled
