Just tried it - works ok.  I think the shutter release button on the
67II and 67 are in a slightly different location.  The 67II is on the
right grip slanted down when holding normal.  Bit of a stretch to
reach in the manner you described - not impossible.

Right now, with the left wood grip on and the camera turned vertical
with shutter button up, the wood grip rests at the front of my palm
and my fingers comfortably reach the focus ring.  Feels much more
comfortable.

I'll try your suggestion a bit and see if it becomes any more
comfortable.
