Centre focus, lots of contrast so it shoudl be fine biut its not. What it feels like its doing is it will focus, then front focus then back focus then front focus then stop. I cannot shot as the focus ilight is flashing so no picture. its sporatic it will be fine for 2-3 shots then it will start.

Sorry to hear about your problems with the 17-70. My sample of the lens has been consistently snappy and fast WRT focus speed. The more I use it, the more I like it. Here is a photo of my cat from a few days ago - plus a detail of his face. Handheld, no adjustments to the raw file in PS.

Took the new 17-70 out to shoot birds in my lilac tree today. First few shots focus snapped in there like no tomorrow. Then it started to acing up. It would hit focus then start hunting, but not a lot just a few mm either way but the green focus indicator would flash and would not let me take the

If there are leaves or branches between you and the subject, the camera/lens doesn't really know what you want. If there is a breeze, and said obstacles are moving, AND you do not have spot focusing on, the camera will hunt. Choosing action mode will do the same thing. Focusing looks for
