Well, somehow, the lens seems to be working properly. It's
loosened up quite a bit after a lot of manipulation (though the rubber
around the focusing ring is looser now), and is achieving focus at both
ends and all points in between, so far.
Lesson learned, transient depressive episode
Shoot a brick wall wide open to see if the focus field remains flat. Use a
tripod and make sure the camera is square to the wall.
