I've been wondering if there is there is any way I might be able to
actually see what I'm doing if I want to shoot from the hip with one of
my Pentax cameras. Are there any good options for this, besides getting
an LX and a proper waist-level finder?
I'm not necessarily looking for a finder

I have been thinking about the same. Building a finder that mounts on
the flash shoe and that you can look into from above from a distance of
at least 30cm and see (more or less) what's in scope of the camera.
The conclusion was that optically at least a mirror and a lens are
needed, but I

I decided to check again, and discovered that Leica made three such waist
level finders.. I guess my searching technique has improved a bit, or
maybe some new pages have been posted to the web. However, I've yet to
actually see such a finder.

The Zigview LCD that has been talked about in this thread might work,
with a custom adapter.

Yep. You can get now get some very basic bs digicams for less, can't you?
Perhaps if I glue one of those to the back of my MX-5n...

What, you expect a *NEW* waist level finder for an LX would be much
less than $200? A used one is listed at KEH for $140
It is feasible, just look at what the box camera's had or some of the
folding camera's... Not very bright, but it was a basic waist-level
viewfinder. I've got a box camera that even has two: one for portrait
and one for landscape shooting!

I read the review, it's a fairly low resolution device, I would expect a
bit more for $219.09 (listed as £119.99). That's about what you could
expect to pay for a refconverter, a device that requires a greater
precision of manufacture. This is probably cobbled together from off
the shelf

I doubt it. I've been involved in manufacturing and packaging. These
people put the cheapest parts they could into an extruded plastic
shell. Costs relatively pennys to manufacture. The retail package and
shipping are probably worth more.
