I know that I'm a little late on this, but backing it up seems to be a
very good idea.
Then test the new drive against both drives, looking at any files that
show discrepancies to make sure there is no corruption. Compare the two
original files and make sure you have an un-corrupted copy.
I don't know the answer to the question you asked, but if it were my
photos I'd go ahead and get another external drive and copy all the
photos over to it just in case.

Rick,
What is the model of this drive? It didn’t quite click what you were saying,
that it wasn’t something like a WD
to the newer drive.

Thanks, Doug and Larry.
I have it backed up to Backblaze; and also had it backed up to another
external drive (which is having problems). A new drive just arrived
last evening, and I'm planning to back it up there too.
Backups have "saved my bacon" several times, so I am diligent about them.
Please tell me you have it backed up to another drive. Or two. Or three.
If not, I'd be worried about that alone, but specific to your query, I'd
be concerned.

I have my photos on an 8TB external drive, in a folder named Photos
(imagine!), and organized by year/month/subject.
The 8TB drive started to act a bit flaky. Running Disk Utility on the
drive (OWC Toshiba MG0s...) gets me the message "First Aid process has
failed."
Running it on the OWC 8TB
