GESO a few from the track

2013-11-23 Thread Larry Colen
When I was out at Sears Point a couple weeks ago, I did pull my camera out a
couple times to try my hand at photographing cars on the track.
I’ve got a lot to learn, and a lot of practice if I’m ever going to be good (or
even competent) at it, but I did get a few OK shot.
I think these were all shot with the K-5 II and the bigma.

Some from a friend’s race group, unfortunately, he kept running into
difficulties, and I didn’t get any shots of him:

Thanks Jack, Richard, Ann, Frank, Paul and Cotty!

It's still from the same location as my last photos, around the Red
Lake in Romania.

The hay stacks are indeed built around a pole with a pitchfork, in the
old fashioned way. They are used to feed cattle during the winter.
People are still doing traditional farming around there.

@Frank: Thanks for letting me know, it doesn't work on my Android
either, not even in Chrome. I will contact support.

a real giggle out of week 47. The link below will take you direct to the

with us during our eye exams. He thought it would be fun to take portraits
of his patients straight and behind the exam instruments. I immediately said
I could do a test since I had my camera on me. This is the result.

I rendered the photo using the Old Polar preset in Lightroom and ended up
liking it the best. Clearly the mirror hanging in the background is a bit
of a distraction, but using cropping and rendering, I tried to make it part
 of the picture.

Next time, I’ll take my tripod, so that I can do a photo of both Darrel and
 I. I can wear the more portable eye instrumentation and stand beside
 darrel—or the other way around.

Well, I don't know about that. There's a group of photographers in NYC who
don't just take photos looking into manholes, they =go down there= and crawl
around and shoot.

PESO - downtown Dallas - bird's eye view

Even though Dallas is on the news in regards to the recent
anniversary of JFK's assassination, this was not prompted by that.
A week ago I was flying to Knoxville, and the plane flew by the downtown
just before landing at DFW.

Thanks Paul, and Godfrey,

Steve and I had very different goals. He had to get a few clear shots of each
car. I didn’t have to get anything and didn’t care how many I threw out. I
also had the advantage of being able to spend time cropping and tweaking the
shots I liked.

There were a couple of LeMons cars out at the track that weekend, and they are
fun to watch. That’s what the Olds with the wing was.

D-LI90 charging: incredibly slow ... ?

2013-11-23 Thread Bruce Walker
Since I upgraded to the K-3 directly from the Pleistocene era K20D, I
skipped all the intermediate models. Therefore I am using a D-LI90
battery for the first time.

What strikes me is how _incredibly_ long it takes to charge. The
initial charge was something like 5 excruciatingly long hours. Then I
used it for 5 days and I'm charging it again tonight. So far, 90
minutes and counting. I'm used to popping the D-LI50 from the K20D in
and having it done in 20-30 minutes at most.

Looks like I'm going to have to get another one to keep fully charged
and ready to swap, something I never had to bother with on the K20D.

So what the hey? Is this normal and expected?

Much appreciated, Paul. My feeling too; this is the first one I'd
actually like to get printed.

 Lovely photo, and excellent light.

Thank you very much, Larry.

I did notice that it wasn't her eyes that the camera was focused on.

Actually, at 100% I could see that pretty much nothing is in clear
focus. At F:2.2 handheld a lot of luck is involved. :-)

Re: 14 image presentation from class

2013-11-23 Thread Bob Sullivan
Ken,
This was a master class on finding what inspires you to take photos.
The Arboretum offers a series of photography classes.
They start with how to operate your camera thru composition, color, macro and
botany - adult education and some good photographers.
I wasn't sure I was qualified for a masters class.
In any case, the lead instructor is a 'retired' 4x5 photographer with 8 books
published and pictures with the Magnum agency.
He has lots of experience to share.
The final night there were some fantastic slide shows.
Regards, Bob S.

I normally always have three batteries for any camera I'm going to use a lot. I
number them and use them in sequence. One in the camera, one fully charged in
the bag, third on the charger if not fully charged.

I made the switch. I bought three aftermarket batteries for the price of
one Pentax battery.

Sorry Pentax, I won't spend that much extra.

I am in no way associated with this vendor, but I have had several happy
