When Jonh Colyle and his wife Jan visited Boston a couple of weeks ago
we went out to Cambridge to hang out, drink beer, talk about the PDML
and shoot some photos. Since the Head of the Charles regatta was going
on at the time we walked down to the river to see about getting some
shots.

Chicago PDML meetup

2016-11-04 Thread jcoyle
Was a great success!  Lovely afternoon with Christine, who met us
just after the big parade to celebrate the Cubs win in the World
Series (after 108 years!), then took us to the Art Institute for the
Impressionists, the photo gallery, and the miniatures.  Afterwards,
to the Bean, the park and thence to the Elephant and Castle pub for
drinks and chat, where Bob and Lynn Sullivan joined us for
dinner.Thank you so much to Christine for being such a terrific guide
and great company, and to Bob and Lynn for making the effort to come
in (2-1/2 hours drive, normally 45 minutes!) and spend time us - it
was really appreciated by Jan and I.No photos for the PDML yet, but I
have posted one on Facebook - really crude conversion to BW from a
soft original - even the K5ii cannot deal with all  my mistakes!

PESO -- Unholy Alliance

2016-11-04 Thread P.J. Alling
For some reason the State of Connecticut seems to have conspired with
Ikea to make it impossible to get to some places in New Haven without
going through Ikea's parking lot... I had to go to one of those
places. There was a spanking breeze blowing which produced this tableau
of flags in front of the Pirelli Tire nee Armstrong Rubber, now Ikea's
concrete billboard. Ikea probably wishes they could tear it down to gain
some more parking spaces, but the same Architectural preservation
society which was set up try to keep examples of earlier buildings safe
from the likes of this building is now protecting it.

Now some may think I don't approve of the former Armstrong Rubber
building, and at one time I may have been ambivalent about it, but I've
come to realize that if I ever became the head of an evil conspiracy to
take over the world, I'd want it for my headquarters.

The Head of th4 Charles is a huge regatta, traditionally the big kick-off
for the Fall rowing season. They usually have 50+ races, many having 30 or
more shells competing, representing colleges and clubs from all over North
America.

PESO: 109 East Palace

2016-11-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
This a a PhotoShop merger of two image I took in downtown Santa Fe:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18306679=lg
Comments are invited and appreciated.

Background information:
This innocuous Santa Fe storefront was once the secret jumping-off spot for
Manhattan Project scientists. "When you need to be dropped off at a
top-secret research facility that does not exist, what address do you give
the driver? For two decades, that address was 109 East Palace in Santa Fe,
New Mexico. Located a few blocks from Santa Fe’s city center, the
unremarkable building served as the first stop for Richard Feyman, Enrico
Fermi, Robert Oppenheimer, and innumerable other scientists working on the
top secret Manhattan Project in nearby Los Alamos. Dozens of scientists,
technicians, and other workers would arrive each day to be ferried up to
"the Hill" where work on the atomic bomb (and possibly other secret science
projects) actually took place. According to Voices of the Manhattan
Project, the primary contact person who greeted arrivals at 109 East Palace
was Dorothy Scarritt McKibbin, who became nearly as vital to the Project as
any of the scientists. McKibbin would process each of the arrivals and keep
the overwhelming secretarial work in order, essentially making sure that
the top-secret trains ran on time. She also became a close confidant of
Oppenheimer, the man widely considered the father of the atomic bomb.
McKibbin ended up staying in Los Alamos after the Project was dissolved and
became a bit of a local celebrity, earning the nickname 'The First Lady of
Los Alamos.' The building at 109 East Palace ceased being a receiving
station for Los Alamos in 1963, but a plaque in the back of the gallery now
occupying the space commemorates the building’s history.

Re: PESO: Early Voting

2016-11-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Yes, it was rather early in the day. I believe it was Saturday. There
were lots of folks at the open market, but the rest of the city was fairly
quiet.

I think the colors in the banner were intentional -- to attract attention
and promote early voting.

Nothing to do this AM but sip coffee and diddle with the water filled boat

Will probably save this final version a little longer.
Appreciate your patience.

Comments? Thanks!

Re: AF film lenses on DSLR

At work I got the FA50/2.8 macro to have something AF for working in the

But what I've seen, and it's not just a Pentax situation, when using it with
the florescent lights for piece shots I get this blue dot in the middle of
the image. Have yet to work with light placement to see if I can eliminate
it. But from what I've been reading it has to do with multiple factors, one
of which is the nature of the film coatings and the light
interactions/reflections with the sensor surface.
I only see the situation under the fl product lights.
Anyone else here have similar issues when product shooting? If so, how did
you resolve the situation?

It sounds like you've accurately assessed the cause of your
phenomenon. The first thing I'd do about it – the first thing I'd do
even if I weren't having that problem – would be to ditch the
fluorescent lighting. It's the most awful form of lighting you can
use. Not just because of the color balance but because it's not a
continuous spectrum source like incandescent lighting.

I've had the same thing happen with the A100mm f/2.8 macro. The hot
spotting is sensor reflections off an inside element. I found it is
really only a problem with high key backgrounds. It's related to veiling
flare.
I use studio strobes, not continuous lighting, so while the florescent
may be ugly light, they aren't causing this problem.

I hope not. I've got pictures I've taken loads of redos - often sometime
after they were taken. You can always come back and see a different crop,
different way of processing, turn it to a B image or even an abstract.
