There's an article with an accompanying video from a guy who's building a DIY "Auto" Film Processor (more semi-auto at this point). TLDR: In most situations I find that I can push up to 10,000 and get usable images, particularly when shooting social or dance events indoors. I'm much better off doing 10,000 without a flash than annoying, or distracting, folks with a flash at lower ISOs. Too noisy is very subjective and depends on the situation. I find the noise at ISO 10,000 comparable to the grain on Tri-X. I have found that I have lost far more photos trying to preserve ISO and ending up at too slow of a shutter speed, or too narrow of a depth of field than I have by pushing the ISO too hard. I used to shoot the K20D up to 1600 ISO, anything above that was usually unusable for large prints. The K-5II seems to be good up to 25600 if you like somewhat chunky* grain at times, color usually seems good with A, F and FA lenses, would probably be just as good with DA lenses but I don't own any. The color is really yellow even when using the highest correction factor under tungsten light with M and K lenses on the K5II. I've also gotten decent results with the *ist-D and Ds at 800 and sometimes 1600, though the latter were usually converted to B Yes, I do still have a *ist-Ds that I use in places that I don't want to risk damage to a better camera. It's effective monetary value is nothing, and slapping an old M 40mm f2.8 lens, (also effectively worth nothing), on it is like going back to using a Spotmatic and TriX 400, it's actually easier to get used to than using the K20D after mostly using the K-5II. *A lot like old GAF 500 ASA slide film except at a much higher sensitivity. I’m right where you are. With both the K-2 and K-3, 25600 seems to be the practical limit. The K-1 shows a slight advantage, probably due to sensor size. When shooting birds or sports I try to keep it at 6400 or less, but go with what nature gives me. Shooting cars for publication I go for 400 or less when using the tripod. Handheld, I go to 1600 if necessary.
