Re: Worldcon 76 (oops, more)
Oops, I forgot a couple of details. I had been wandering around showing off a metal print of this photo, which I considered worth showing off: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/42922334624 and someone bought it from me. It does work well in metal, and was meant as a test print, rather than a final product, so that was cool. She offered me $100 and it cost me $60 to print, so while it isn't a great markup percentage, I'm thrilled that my test print paid for itself. I had a few other people ask about buying it as well. It seems that metal is a good medium for selling, because it doesn't require expensive hanging and framing, and photos that work well in metal are the bright eye catching ones that tend to appeal to the masses. One of the major photographers in the local fandom community did a presentation on one of his projects, a series of portraits of authors and others in the field on a 4x5 camera. I can certainly understand the appeal of using that camera, but it really does not seem to be the optimal tool for the job of portraiture, particularly in situations of limited time, particularly at $5/frame. It was such a good idea, too. Not that there's anything wrong with sites like Flickr, Tumblr, Instagram, etc., etc., etc., where you decide for yourself which of your images get posted, but there's real value in a *curated* gallery. Ten years of editing the PDML Photo Annual has shown me just how many people aren't good judges of what constitutes their own best work. Where the PPG failed was in not finding an adequate way of incentivizing image voting and not promoting the resulting gallery, touting its difference from other online galleries. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
