Re: PESO: 8 butterflies & 2 moths

2018-09-11 Thread Henk Terhell

Reading from wikipedia:

Danaus genutia, the common tiger, is one of the common butterflies of
India. It belongs to the "crows and tigers", that is, the Danainae group
of the brush-footed butterflies family. The butterfly is also
called striped tiger in India to differentiate it from the equally
common plain tiger, Danaus chrysippus_._

Re: PESO - River Thames

2018-09-11 Thread Igor PDML-StR

1600 x 1200 is too large.
Even on the screen where I have 1920x1200 resolution, it is very seldom
that I have the browser window open to the full screen, as I usually do
many things in parallel on my computer.
My laptop has even smaller screen resolution. So, your 1600 pixels do not
fit in the browser window (and laptop's screen).
Instead of the photo being aligned on the left side, there is a huge empty
margin on the left.

Actually, the image itself is 800x800px. So, having that table 1600 px
wide is rather strange.

Here is how your page looks in my browser:
http://42graphy.org/cotty/SC-page.jpg

Overall, my personal opinion is that a photo should be easily visible on
the screen of the targeted audience without scrolling (either vertical or
horizontal).

A lot of people around me are using laptops. Until recently, most laptops
were with XGA screens (1024x768), and then some with the "wide-screen"
aspect 1280x720 or 1280x800.

So, I was trying to keep the photos within 900x600 px, to allow for the
browser frame, headers, etc.
Gradually (and especially since many laptop screens are now 1366x768 or
higher), I've relaxed those to 700x700 for the square format.

HTH,

Igor

BTW, the webpage layout is a bit annoying: it has this empty white space

forcing that empty space. (I am vaguely remembering that I may have
commented on that earlier. If so, - I am sorry for repeating it.)

Ah, interesting. No I haven't heard you rant on this before ;-)

The page is created in Softpress Freeway 7 which is rather dated and is a
WYSIWYG editor for simpletons like me. The page is 1600 by 1200 pixes and
aligned centre so I'm at a loss as to why you would have to scroll
sideways?
Happy to take advice as I just wanted a simple white page as a template
for my pics :-)

Re: It seems that metal prints sell

2018-09-11 Thread Ken Waller
I've had a number of my images done by Bay Photo put on metal plates and I
think that medium has a lot going for it.
On the wall they float about 1/2" from the wall and have a modern feel to
them. With the conventional print in a frame you have the added task of
picking a mat, frame and glass which must add to the image or you stand the
chance of a potential buyer liking the image but not the frame, mat etc.

Plus I think your profit margin can be higher since you're not paying for
those frames, mats etc.

I normally wait for Bay Photo's special sales on the metal prints for added
savings.

Haar sadly not.

There was a veritable plethora of swans there that day. I like a bit of
quirkiness in my photographs so was waiting for something unusual. I excluded
the other birds from the frame and waited for this one to drift further to the
bank so that his body was not visible - then when he was just a head an neck, I
started shooting. The other frames he was looking straight at me, which
mimicked the church spire better, but I didn't like losing the classic curl in
the neck, so went with this frame. I chose a square crop as the spaces left and
right added nothing. I like it so er flew with it.

Ah, interesting. No I haven't heard you rant on this before ;-)

The page is created in Softpress Freeway 7 which is rather dated and is a
WYSIWYG editor for simpletons like me. The page is 1600 by 1200 pixes and
aligned centre so I'm at a loss as to why you would have to scroll sideways?
Happy to take advice as I just wanted a simple white page as a template for my
pics :-)

The funny highlight of the shot is the white bird head peeking from its

your otherwise "classic" tranquil image.
Did Godfrey work as the "trap" for it?

BTW, the webpage layout is a bit annoying: it has this empty white space
on the left, requiring to scroll the page to the right to see the
photograph. There is some weird table structure in the webpage design that
forcing that empty space. (I am vaguely remembering that I may have
commented on that earlier. If so, - I am sorry for repeating it.)

As for "Thames", that often brings up this old joke that I remember
since my childhood:
(Being lazy to type it up, I've found this, slightly different but very
similar version on the Internet)

The Master of the house is comfortably installed in an armchair in the
library, reading a newspaper. Suddenly, John, his butler rips the door
open and shouts, "Sir, the Thames is flooding the streets!" The Master
looks up calmly from the newspaper and says: "John, please. I have already
told you before, if you do have something important to tell me, first
knock on the door, then enter and inform me, in a quiet and civilized
manner, about the issue. Now please, do so." John apologizes and closes
the door behind him. Three seconds later, the Master hears a knock on the
door. "Yes?" John partially enters the room and with a gesture one would
make when welcoming and ushering in somebody and water flowing over his
shoes, he announced, "Sir, the Thames."

Cheers,

Igor

Re: OT: Florence

2018-09-11 Thread John
Yeah, I'm thinking about if there's anything I need to stock up on; trying to
make a plan 'B' for stuff I can cook on the camp stove. I always have bread,
peanut butter, canned soups & stove-top Mac & Cheese.

Plus I have bullion cubes, noodles, canned tuna & chicken, fresh & canned
veggies. If I get through this one, next time, I'll get a case of MREs to keep
in the house.

There's not that much perishable food in my fridge. It's still full of film &
photographic paper. The only thing I really desperately need the fridge for is
to keep the ice maker going.

I guess I'm about as prepared as I can get, but I'm still trying to think of any
additional things I might do to get ready.

John - hope you are not hit as hard as they are predicting -- we are supposed to
suffer a bit from Florence as well - but it isn't clear...

one question -   only 5 gallons of water???

ann

The National Hurricane Center recommends 3 gallons per person. I'm up to 6 now
(found another empty last night & filled it).

That's not counting a dozen 500ml bottles of water I keep in each of my cars.

With previous storms, I never had any problem with the water being shut off.
Never even got a "boil water" advisory.

My big deal right now is trying to get my kitchen completed today & tomorrow,
because I know if the winds blow the roof off again, I'm not going to be able to
get back to working on the kitchen for a while.

At least this time around I don't have to worry about the National Guard calling
me to State Duty for the cleanup. Any damage I'll be able to get on to repairing
right away instead of spending two weeks trying to ride herd on a bunch of crazy
people who have never used a chain saw before.

I'm trying to stay positive.
