& if you cropped an image without the TC to the same size would it be
just as good?

Lightroom Problem, solved (for now...?)

2021-07-16 Thread Rick Womer
The problem with the unwanted face detection (which could not be turned off)
evolved quickly into LR thinking that I had 43,000 missing photos, in addtion
to the 50,000 actual photos on my hard drive. It also seemed to attach some
urgency to my finding said photos, though they did not exist.

I had 2 long on-line sesions with Adobe support staff, which got nowhere; they
ended with some suggestions that I tried, and they just didn’t work.

Wednesday I tried again and got a tech (Nisha) who was bright, curious, and
eager to be helpful. The upshot of four hours interacting via Bomgar (allowing
her to control my computer remotely while chatting) was that LR had become
convinced, for no apparent reason, that I was hiding a folder that contained
the 44,000 missing pics. She managed to persuade Lightroom that this was not
the case, and then we set about rebuilding and checking the catalog.

So… It appears that I’m back in business. Might have to post a PESO again this
weekend.

Criminals are still taking advantage of the situation where they can.
Yesterday they robbed & vandalised a Crematorium & a Psychiatric
Hospital - can you believe it? Tragic for all the targeted business
owners who have lost so much. An amnesty has been proposed for looters
to return goods without fear of prosecution. One commentator said
yesterday that "concerned" politicians don't have a leg to stand on
because they have been looting state funds from metaphorical
supermarkets for years! Zuma supporters & incompetents lurking in the
Cabinet have now been exposed. A major Cabinet re-shuffle can't be far
away.

Re: 16-50 redo

2021-07-16 Thread pentax
They are yes, and it promises to be an outstanding lens.

Mike Muizenbelt did a short review of a pre-release copy on Youtube.

It is focussing fast and accurate, and is amazingly sharp, even in the corners.

However, since I already have the older one (SDM) which works OK, and also have
the K1 with 24-70 en 15-30, an upgrade is not really worth it at some 1400
Euros/dollars I think ;-)

Re: The ist D

Great video Juan!

I like your style of street photography very much.

Had an MX as wel as an Ist-D myself, the latter died with a failing CF
card-slot, but it was a nice cam indeed.

Are Teleconverters a Con?

2021-07-16 Thread Alan C
All teleconverters degrade the image to some extent, 2x more than 1.4x.
In film & 6Mp days cropping wasn't really an option so they did give
more reach without the expense of a longer lens. Long ago I had an M42
Vivitar 2x which made my SuperTak 55/2 a useful 110/4. Given a high
quality TC and a fast host lens, good results are possible. However with
the high Mp sensors now in common use, a cropped image without the TC
may be just as good or even better so what is the point? Only perhaps
cropping options of the TC image which starts with full Mp?

Just to let you know.

Sparked by the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma, South
Africa has descended into a near state of anarchy in several densely
populated areas no doubt orchestrated by Zuma supporters. The level of
destruction is very serious & will lead to many problems in the near
future especially the distribution of essential goods because delivery
trucks have been burned on the highways too.

The authorities have been slow to react but Taxi Associations &
vigilanties are fighting back to save their infrastructure from
pillage. The Police & Army have been overwhelmed.

Fortunately there are no problems in the Lowveld yet but roadblocks
have been set up on the main roads into Phalaborwa as a precaution
after intelligence suggested that hordes may be on their way.

Please look on the internet if you want more details & commentary.
