So - here's a comparison shot of my new and old systems.

Olympus: M1X + 11-100/f4 + 40-150mm/f2.8 + 2xTC
Pentax: K5 + 16-50/f2.8 + 60-250mm/f4 + 1.4xTC (+ 50-135mm/f2.8)

(The Olympus is shown with the two extra batteries I bought for it;
it goes through batteries a lot faster than the K-5 with the grip,

The Pentax gear is a bit faster at the wide end (16mm/f2.8 vs. 12mm/f4)
But at 40mm the Olympus catches up, and from 90mm (~135mm on the Pentax)
I'm limited to f4 on the Pentax, while the Olympus still offers me f2.8
all the way out to 150mm (~225mm).

I've got a 2xTC for the Olympus 40-150, and a 1.4x for the Pentax 60-250.
These give me f5.6 all the way out to 350mm (Pentax) or 300mm (Olympus);
this means that with the Olympus I have the same maximum aperture, and a
slightly longer reach to fill the frame at the top of the zoom range.

P.S. The comparison shot was taken using my trusty old Olympus E-PL1.
I decided to take another shot showing the E-PL1 next to its new
 stablemate:
This was taken using my phone camera (a Google Pixel 3).
At first glance the phone camera seems to do considerably better
than the E-PL1 (not too surprising - the E-PL1 is over 10 years old).

Excellent indeed! The detail is remarkable — “Steady Stenquist” is still
steady!

The woodpecker is also my favorite.

A neighbor has a few bird feeders out; but the birds perch on the nearby

OT: cooking with GAS

2022-04-12 Thread Larry Colen
I recently mentioned that I had been thinking of getting a u4/3 camera to carry
on my bike rather than the K-3. Godfrey replied that he had a Gx9 and a couple
of lenses that he was willing to get rid of to lighten his load. As one would
expect of him, all of the gear was in immaculate shape.

Some photos of the camera, and a couple of it next to the K-3 with 18-270

https://photos.app.goo.gl/3EFqnwQmnmik8QR26

It looks like it will be a LOT easier to carry on my bike.

For my first couple of photos I used the PK adapter with my mf adaptall 90/2.5
macro, picked a camellia off the ground in my front yard and grabbed a couple
of quick snaps.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720298050194

At least in decent light, the image quality is just fine.

It’s not the direction that I thought I’d go with u4/3, I was looking at the
Oly Omd-m5, but the goal was something to carry on my bike, not something to
replace my Pentaxes for more serious work, and I think it should do well for
that.

What it lacks in size, it makes up for in features. Trying to find anything in
the maze of menus is an epic search. And there are things about the UI that I
am less than thrilled about, and a bunch of things I don’t see much use for.
However, there were a couple of interesting surprises, like the utility of the
touch screen.
