As I was about to say, before my finger slipped and set that last post out

Hungary and Slovakia to my world list.

This is a very cowsmopolitan group; I would be interested in hearing about
how widely others here have traveled.

PESO: August PUG reject

2022-08-02 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Since the list is so quiet, I decided to post as a PESO one of the images I
looked at for the August PUG (On the Road) before choosing a different
image.

My favorite road trip, as you might imagine, is the fabled Road to Hana, on
the island of Maui. It is really more than a drive from Kahului to
"Heavenly Hana," as some of the best sights are beyond the village of Hana
itself. The Hana Highway is a 64.4-mile-long stretch of Hawaii Routes 36
and 360 that connects Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. The Hana
Highway begins at the end of busy Kaahumanu Avenue, by the airport and
Costco, but the adventure starts after Route 37 branches off towards the
summit of Haleakala and 36 heads along the coast, past the artsy surfer
town of Paia, to Hookiapa, where surfers, windsurfers and sea turtles crowd
the beach and Peahi, with its monster offshore waves, known as "Jaws,"
reachable only by jet ski.

Beyond that are several waterfalls visible from the road, and more
enticing ones a short hike Mauka (inland). Before Hana is Waianapanapa
State Park, with its striking black sand beach, explorable lava tubes, a
powerful blowhole and majestic views. Although Hana is only about 52 miles
from Kahului, even an uninterrupted drive would take 2.5 hours, since the
highway is very narrow, and passes over 59 bridges, of which 46 are only
one lane wide. There are approximately 620 curves, many of them hairpins,
while driving through lush, tropical rainforest.

12 miles past Hana is Oheo Gulch, part of Haleakala National Park, where a
short hike leads to numerous waterfalls, many with inviting freshwater
pools. One mile south is the Palapala Ho'omau Church, with the grave of
Charles Lindburgh, who helped preserve this part of Maui, with funding from
the Rockefeller family. On my last visit, I left a miniature Distinguished
Flying Cross on his grave, to commemorate what we have in common.

This part of the back route from Hana is technically part of Route 31 (the
Piilani Highway), but it is a narrow and very rough unpaved road, and does
not connect with the main part of 31. Rather, the road turns inland, past
a wind turbine farm, to join the Haleakala highway near the large
Ulupalakua cattle ranch and the Tedeschi Vineyards. There is a private
road there that leads to Oprah's estate, and beyond to the coastal resort
of Wailea, but regular folks must take the long highway back to Kahului
before heading South to the beach.

In any event, here is an image from my last trip on the Hana highway, when
a rockslide had blocked part of the narrow road, and a work crew was busy
clearing away the debris. Besides the memories it evokes, I like the
expression on the nearest worker, frustrated at being delayed by yet
another car full of tourists.
