Re: Monitor calibrator question

2022-08-24 Thread Paul Sorenson
Here's another vote for the Spyder.  I've been using the Datacolor
calibrators on Windows marhines though several iterations beginning with
the Spyder 2, and now the Spyder X Pro.  All have proven worthy of
spot-on calibration.  Amazon is showing the Spyder X Pro for $150.

So, I am shopping for a new calibrator. I’m not feeling fond of Xrite at the
moment. What are people’s experiences with the Spyder calibrator (a mere $169)?

You can be pretty sure Spyder will have the right drivers for your new Mac.
I’ve been through four mac computers since I bought my first Spyder about 20
years ago. No software problems I render photos for publication on a regular
basis. The NY Times photo editors have told me my renders are bullseyes, same
with the magazine guys I work with.

Same here. Two Spyders even. Never was happy with them. Then I got a
Colormunki and I've been a happy camper ever since.

Having said this, I still haven't calibrated my current Eizo CS2740.
It's been spot on right out of the box. Never felt the need to do
something about it.

Which did you get? What is it replacing? M1 processor? I will be interested to
read your review on it, particularly for photo processing.

Re: Monitor calibrator question

2022-08-24 Thread Bill
X-Rite is the gold standard for monitor calibration. Frankly, it's not
their fault that Apple breaks shit every time they release an update.
I've been using the same Eye1 since Windows XP. I'm now on Win 10 using the
same software as I started with.

I'd be feeling not fond of Apple for fucking things up for me and buy
another X-Rite.

Whatever you buy, you can rest assured that at some point Apple will decide
to screw you on it.

I had a Spyder, which I had bought because in theory one could use it in Linux,
but they were downright antagonistic. At some point after getting my mac I went
to the colormunki, which I liked a lot better. I recently ran into isues with
the colormunki/xrite software no longer working on the generation of macos on
my computer, so I upgraded that and broke lightroom. Long story short, I ended
up having to do some aftermarket juju to upgrade my mac pro to catalina (which
is about to be end of life) and start paying for the ransomware lightroom.

You could try running displaycal and see how it works with the xrite i1

Re: GESO - Metropolis

Thanks.

This is plain, old Oslo. Several shots are from recently developed areas.

I'm not sure it qualifies as a Metropolis, really, but I was looking for
that "theme" at least in part, seeing as it's also the marketing name of
the film. :-)

Ah. Not sure I've watched any of his films in their entirety, but I've
seen some scenes. Didn't think about them when posting, though.

What is the ‘special’ film you used?

The film is actually called Metropolis. Lomography brand. Which I guess
often means a repackaged/rebranded version of something else, possibly
intended for a different purpose, but I think they claim that this one
is actually a new film.

I have been taking B film photos lately, mainly Ilford FP-4, but I have
bought five rolls of Ferrania P30 which promises interesting things.

Nice.

Now I have to find a suitably neo-realist set of subjects.

Exactly. I also got a roll of Lomography Potsdam Kino 100. Might be similar.
