St. Patrick's Day in Berkeley

2023-03-19 Thread John Francis

On Fridy my wife and I drove up to Berkeley to catch a
St. Patrick's Day gig at the Freight & Salvage (a music
venue). Getting there was a nightmare - instead of the
hour and a quarter that Google Maps was estimating when
we left home it took us twice that - there were no less
than three separate accidents that were slowing traffic.
Fortunately we'd allowed for that, and still got to the
venue on time.

We were there to see The Black Brothers - two members
of an Irish family well know in their country of origin
who moved to Berkeley quite some time ago.

I didn't have a camera with me, as the Freight's website
explicitly states that no photography will be allowed.
As you can imagine I was more than a little annoyed to
find out that this was not the case - photography is
restricted, but not outright forbidden. (I was rather
looking forward to finding out just how well my current
camera did when compared to some older shots I'd taken
in the Freight's previous venue using my PZ-1p and the
A* 300/2.8)

Fortunately I was not totally without a camera - I had
my phone (a Google Pixel 6a)in my pocket. I got this:

I'm more than a little impressed!

He had just gotten up from the desk when the tree came crashing down.

Power is out again right now. It took the 2 days to fix it the first time, I
got woken up by a text from PGE that power was out, an hour later got a text
that it was back, then an hour later it was out again. Same number of houses,
when I left for breakfast they were working on the pole.

I have a co-worker in town from New Jersey who needed a place to stay, all of
this came down an hour after we left the house on Tuesday morning, so he got to
spend a couple nights in a cabin in the woods with no electricity. Wednesday,
just as we were leaving someone showed up from AT to recon the situation, he
said I had to make sure to file a trouble ticket specifically for my house. I
get my network feed through Sonic, which has much better customer service than
AT, I was on the phone with them (mostly on hold) while she was on hold with
AT trying to get something scheduled. Wednesday night I drove pretty much
all night down to Riverside (took a nap in a Walmart parking lot someplace
South of Pomona) and got a call from someone at AT asking if I was “there”,
after a bit of confusion it turned out he meant at the new place for work, not
my house.

So, I’m hanging out at a local diner that has both power and internet right
now.

The funny thing about “the good thing is that the tree missed my house” is that
if it did hit my house, a bunch of repairs that the house needs anyways would
have gotten paid for by insurance while they were fixing the tree damage.

I did some research. Lampreys have a very unusual lifecycle - egg,

short. Their larvae feed on algae & rubbish before transforming into
sexually mature adults. The digestive tract of all adults quickly
becomes degenerate so they can no longer feed in the normal way. The
larger species like the river lampreys which have specially adapted
mouthparts become parasitic & are able to survive a few more years on a
blood diet. Eventually, they too perish after procreation. Parasitism of

This bounced earlier this morning—I don’t know why.

So, I’m trying again.

Re: PESO: European brook lamprey

2023-03-19 Thread Alan C
I did some research. Lampreys have a very unusual lifecycle - egg,
larva, adult & then die immediately after procreating for the first
time. The big difference between the species is the larval stage which
can last from 2 to 10 years. The life cycle of the brook lamprey is very
Parasitism of
humans has been recorded but is uncommon.

Re: UK PDML meet-up in May, anyone?

2023-03-19 Thread Bob W PDML
It happened just over four weeks ago so I’m well on the road to recovery now.
I was in A for about four hours - you go to the front of the queue if you
have a head injury, so I was seen and treated straight away.

Once my head had cleared I noticed they’d written ‘?stroke’ against my name on
the whiteboard. I was looking forward to that, but sadly none of the nurses
stroked me. Bloody NHS!
