RE: Print Scanner

Edd - as they are prints even an ordinary printer with a flat bed scanner will
work, provided the resolution is set at 600-1200 dpi,
and any post-processing is done with a decent software app such as VueScan or
Photoshop Elements. VueScan may be a bit complex for
her, but Elements or even Microsoft Photo have some adjustment capability.
If not, I have used an Epson V500 successfully for the same job.

Long time lurker.

My sister has been asking me about how to get her old printed photos scanned to
digital files. My guess is her family albums of
4x6's.
Should she use a service or buy a bulk scanner (vs flatbed).

The scanners run $200-$600 depending on quality (Epson FastFoto FF-680W being
the high end, Plustek the low end). Hard to spend
$600 for what essentially is tool for only a limited amount of time.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Preferences one way or
the other?

Very impressive. Probably the best I’ve seen in the year or so I’ve been

A small note for John Coyle - I think that’s Knaresborough, North Yorkshire,

RE: Australia - Brisbane and Perth

2023-08-21 Thread jcoyle
The best store for film and processing is FotoFast at Taringa - he carries a
wide range of film, including medium format, offers a
1-hour service, and has good modern processing equipment.
You can park underneath the building, at 200 Moggill Road - watch out for the
entrance across the sidewalk, traffic is very busy
there and it's easy to miss!
Locally, I can recommend Lone Pine Koala sanctuary, to see the aforenamed 'drop
bears', plus kangaroos, birds , a wombat or two etc.
For a view across Brisbane, go to Mount Coot-tha. We have some good family
areas too - South Bank, the W=Queensland Museum puts on
some excellent family oriented exhibitions, the Queensland Art Gallery is good
too. There are a number of large shopping malls in
the suburbs, the most convenient dependent on where you will be staying.
I'd be happy to meet up if you have time, and just ask if there is anything
specific you need clarification on.

You could check them online & search to see if any of them stock the B film
you prefer to use.

I didn't do a search for Perth ...

Maybe even a little beyond the red dot which is calibrated for an IR wavelength
of around 750 nm corresponding to the usual near-infrared film stock like
Ilford SFX200 or Konica 750. The infrared sensitivity of a DSLR sensor extends
way beyond that, well into the 800's, shifting the focus point even more.

And don't try to step down beyond f8 to gain more DOF. Aperture diffraction at
IR sets in a lot sooner than with visible light.

I've been using a #87 gelatine filter on my unmodified *istDS. This filter is
almost completely impervious to visible light.

Here's an example:

RE: K3-III metering

2023-04-26 Thread jcoyle
I'd had my first camera for a week, and was on board a ship off Funchal,
Madeira, and wanted to take a shot of the harbour and city lights. I had no
idea how to set the camera, and an experienced fellow passenger helped me out.
He asked two questions :
"What film are you using?" - K32
"What's the lens?" - Colour-Lanthar f2.8
"Ok - set it at 1/30th and f2.8" - which I did, and it worked perfectly!

On another occasion, a couple of years later, the sun was setting through light
rain, and, from a very high hill, and, with my non-metering Pentax SV, decided
1/8th at f1.8 might work, this time on K64. It did too, and is one of what I
consider my best images: PDML-ers may recall it from a PESO or gallery entry a
long time ago.
So we did get good images by guess and by God, although we also had a lot of
misses!

Sunny 16 is more applicable to tropical locations with bright light.
Perhaps something like Sunny 11 in Temperate climates? Those were starting
points for 100ASA film at 1/100 sec. From there it was all mental arithmetic or
the use of tables.

I have, and occasionally use with my non-metered cameras, a Gossen Lunasix

It is a technique that basically locks you into static subjects which can stand
making multiple exposures over a minute or two as you swap equipment around,
and also carries the cost of having to lug around yet another camera. Seems
less than appealing to me. I usually carry the minimum of gear, and
particularly when I'm carrying a largish and heavy camera to begin with.

RE: Pentax K3-iii Monochrome

2023-04-14 Thread jcoyle
Years ago I went back to the UK and as part of the trip was showing my (second)
wife places where I used to live.
Outside one house I'd lived in as a teenager, I took a couple of frames with my
Pentax, at which a woman came storming out telling me I had no right to take a
picture of her house - fortunately, she calmed down when I explained why. I did
not attempt to use the reasoning that, being in a public place, I could
photograph anything ( but not necessarily a person) I wished.
Strangely, in the same trip, I visited my former RAF station and all I needed
to do was to check with the MP on duty at the guardhouse, to get permission to
wander around ad take as many as I liked! It was, though, a medical unit, not
an operational fighter or bomber unit.
In another thread, people on the small island where I lived are now saying that
news outlets cannot publish photos taken at school events, because the kids are
identifiable. Has this madness gone too far?

Godfrey's procedures are similar to mine, with the difference that my colour
printers have always been used for both document and photo printing, thus they
have been well-exercised. With one (very) early exception, I've always used HP
printers: currently have a one-year-old HP7770 A3 which does an excellent job,
and an HP1100 B Laser which I bought in 2007, and is still going strong. I
only ever use genuine HP inks and toner, which may help to explain their
longevity.

fail when the R2400 came out. I bought that (Oct 2005) and printed literally
thousands of prints with it over the next 10-11 years. The P600 came out about
then, and Ann needed a printer, cheap, so I gave her the R2400 and bought
myself a P600.

The R2400 died shortly after Ann got it (but I think she got the job she needed
done with it) … I've always suspected that the shipment handling probably was
the death factor. The P600 continues to work perfectly and has similarly
produced a couple of thousand prints in the years I've had it.

The keys to longevity with these devices is:

1- Keep them in use, don't let them sit and sit. I try to print at least two
8x10 photographs every other week at least, exercising all the print head
nozzles

2- Don't run them with inks past the the ink's expiration date. Most of the
problems I've had with any of my printers have been when I stuck an expired ink
cartridge in because I needed to get something done and didn't have a fresh
cartridge on hand. Because the cartridges are expensive and sometimes I'm not
printing very much, I keep one spare set only on hand, ordering new
replacements as they each become exhausted. I mark the cartridges so I know the
expiration date of what's in the printer, and when I put a cartridge into
service.

I don't have much more to add to help David's problem, unfortunately. It's been
too long since I used an R2400 to remember the details of its maintenance and
error indicators at this point.

Diagnosed at age 92 and made it well past her 94th birthday.
An amazing woman.

Of course, having a cancer patient in the house meant Lisa and I were "extra

RE: OS 11 --> Weird problem

2023-01-30 Thread jcoyle
I fired up the Epson software after trying Henk's suggestion, and while it
allowed me to select Professional mode, I never got to
see a 'Scan' button! So I fired up VueScan 64, Version 6497 from April 2022,
and it immediately offered me the latest upgrade.
Installed it, and - Lo and Behold! After working out the interface, I am
cheerfully scanning some Kodachrome 64.
I do find you need to thoroughly understand the way all the parameters need to
be set under the VueScan interface, but it does work
well under W11.

Thanks for the help!

John, I remember the trouble I had installing my Epson V500 under W10. The
trick was to install the software from the CD and right
click on the file escndv.exe in the epson folder under program files (x86).
There you can change compatibility mode to an earlier
windows version. I choose Vista at the time and the professional Epson mode has
been working fine. My worries are whether this trick
will also work under W11.
You will have to wait forever for a new driver and software from Epson for
this old model scanner.

How good is old gear?

2023-01-16 Thread jcoyle
I know we are all impressed by the quality of modern equipment: I was given a
lesson today in what our older kit could produce. In
researching an article I am writing, I went back to an image taken on a
Voigtlander Vito CD 35mm rangefinder camera, the first
camera I ever owned. Scanned some years ago on an Epson V500, I made an inkjet
print 39x25cm, and the detail is so good the
portholes on a ship 300 metres away moving at 25 knots and taken from a small
boat are tack sharp.
No wonder I don't need to go shopping, not even for Pentax!

RE: What Pentax gear is on your shopping (or wish) list?

2023-01-14 Thread jcoyle
There is not really anything I want: I'm not very active photographically
anyway, and my kit encompasses the range 16-500mm, fit
both my film and digital cameras (at least those with a bayonet mount) and for
older cameras I have enough lens for my occasional
use, ranging from 18-135mm. Were this not the case, I'd probably have to
refamiliarise myself with what is current, but I am not
sure that the photography I actually do would significantly benefit from newer
gear - I use a K5ii and an MZ-S mainly, with
occasional forays into film with an SV, a Spotmatic, or a Rolleicord.
Which is why I have seldom got into gear discussions...

Subject: What Pentax gear is on your shopping (or wish) list?

It was recently observed that there is almost no discussion of Pentax gear, or
even gear for your Pentax, on this list lately.

Let's get this kick started: What gear is on your shopping list, or at least
your wish list? Why do you want it? Why haven't you
bought it yet?

The two major pieces of kit on my "want" list, are the DFA 24-70/2.8, and the
K-3 III.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've kind of wanted a weather sealed, "fast",
daily driver lens. I already have a Tamron 28-70/2.8
and the DFA 28-105/3.5-5.6 which is WR. So I do have weather sealed in that
range, and I do have a f/2.8 lens in that range. I
also have the 16-50/2.8 which works just fine on my K-3. So, I already have
the lenses that pretty much surround that specific bit
of functionality.

As to the K-3 III, what I really want would be a K-1 III, a K-1 with all of the
nifty features they've added to the K-3 III (though
I don't really need the fancy pentaprism for the larger field of view, because
it's already bigger), plus a modern sensor. The K-3
was released almost 7 years ago, I mostly use mine these days when I either
want a wide angle of view, with a fast lens, or when I
need the best sensor performance available to me in challenging light. I would
not be surprised if when you compared the final
images, the K-3 III sensor outperformed the K-1.

Since a K-1 III isn't available, or even announced, there are a lot of things
the K-3 III does better than my K-1, but I have barely
had a chance to take any photos at all the past year, and I haven't really had
any chance to photograph in conditions where I'm up
against the performance limits of either of my Pentax camera bodies. I have
very little reason not to hold off on buying a K-3 III
until either the price drops, or they sell a major upgrade to the K-1.

The 85/1.4 is also kind of on my wish list, but the pricing is such that it
barely qualifies as an idle fantasy.

All work, and I regularly use the MZ-S: I am not sure about buying a new model,

I believe I have:
2 MX (one - my first K-mount - bought new; one black bought much later as a

  ME Super
  Super Program
  PZ-1P
  MZ-S

and a variety of old lenses, teleconverters, winders; I even have an MX motor

I also have an airtight box in my freezer with a couple of dozen rolls of old

roll or two of Royal Gold 25, IIRC)

Despite that collection I, too, have no desire to go back to shooting any more

RE: Gorilla

2022-12-01 Thread jcoyle
I've scanned a considerable number of slides, negatives, and old glossy prints
using an Epson V500 scanner, with what I think are good quality results. The
trickiest were old family negatives from other members of the family processed
by the local chemist!
The impossible were the tiny negatives from 70's era insta-type cameras, could
never get a decent image from them, and there are no commercial holders
available, AFAIK.
Not sure if this helps!

I have the BEOON as well .. it's useful for quickies, but to do a full roll of
film, or a lot of slides, it isn't convenient or as consistent as other jigs.

The Essential Film Holder negative carrier, by Andrew Clifforth, is what I've
been using for some months now. It's a simple jig, not too expensive, and he
can supply a variety of masks for 35mm strips, mounted slides, and various 120
formats. Work with any 2x2 inch mounted slides. The website is here:
https://clifforth.co.uk/index2.html

This and a thin flourescent or LED based light box works great with my copy
stand and whatever camera/macro lens setup I need for a format.

Since I setup and do my scanning in my office, I minimize ambient light by
shutting the blinds and turning off all but my desk lamp at a low setting. I've
also done a simple black paper shield surrounding the camera and film stage but
haven't found it particularly necessary. The hardest stuff I have to copy are
my Polaroids … the ultra-glossy print surface is hellish with respect to
reflections and keeping it flat!

I'm going to set up and do some scanning later today (it's rainy out, I will be
home all afternoon it seems). I'll photograph the setup with the EFH in a
couple of configurations and post some photos.

Only four of us have posted photos, and they’ve gotten very few comments.

How about some pix and commentary, friends?

RE: catching up on a hot summer day (Where's Ann been?)

2022-08-08 Thread jcoyle
Don't know how I missed this earlier, Anne - but so glad things are beginning
to get better!
Reminds me that, just before we were coming to the USA in 2016, I had a similar
fall - tripped on a kerb, fractured my right eye socket, almost degloved my
right hand and had a number of other scrapes and bruises. Did not overnight in
hospital, but had some excellent repair work done by very kind and efficient
staff, and allowed to go home. Three weeks later, I'm meeting Anne on 7th.East
for an excellent lunch!
Keep safe, Anne us oldies gotta hang around a bit longer.

RE: OT: Why It's Illegal to Take Photos of the Eiffel Tower at Night

2022-06-30 Thread jcoyle
While in Paris on several occasions during the 1970's, I took a number of
photos of the Eiffel Tower at night: since these predated any grant of
copyright, I think I would contest any claim upon the copyright by a third
party, and also amongst others on the grounds I am not a EU citizen and
therefore not subject to their laws while outside the territory.
On a more general note, I agree that the world has gone crazy, with corporates
trying to control images beyond any reasonable extent, and suing, in the USA,
companies outside the USA for trade mark infringement where the defendant has
used the brand long before the existence of the appellant's brand.

I refer to the response of the commander of US forces at Bastogne - "Nuts".

The company running the Eiffel Tower (SETE) have the rights not to the tower
itself but the nightly illumination.

fotocommunity.de have a special agreement with them to the effect that you may
publish those photos via your account on their website if you add a mention
transferring the SETE the rights to the image.

And it's not only the Eiffel Tower. There's a rule in Belgium saying that you
aren't allowed to publish photos of the Atomium in Brussels regardless if
they've been taken by day or night.

As of January 28, 2022, it is no longer allowed to take and publish photos of
the two Belgian nuclear power stations near Liège and Antwerp.

The whole world is goin crazier by the day.

I think you mean bluetooth, not USB. USB is hard wired.

Forgive my asking the obvious - and I know you're very experienced!
USB or hard-wired mouse?
If USB - mouse battery Ok? USB port functions correctly with other devices?
If hard-wired - will it work on another PC?

In either case - drivers up-to-date?
No particles blocking the optical sensor?

In either case, if you have another mouse, remove it from devices in the system
and install an old one and test.

I've started having a problem where the mouse pointer just disappears & won't
come back.

Windoze10 (came preinstalled on the new computer I bought when my old computer
died).

I've done the two things Micro$oft recommends - ♦ UNCHECKED the box that says
"Hide the mouse pointer while typing", and ♦ CHECKED the box that says "Show
the location of the pointer when I press the CTRL key.

When the pointer disappears pressing CTRL causes an expanding circle to flash
momentarily on the scree showing where the mouse pointer is supposed to be.

But at the same time I can't move the pointer with the mouse. No matter how I
move the mouse, the pointer is frozen in the same position.

The only way I've found to bring the mouse pointer back when it malfunctions
this way is use keyboard commands CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up a log off screen
(using the tab key to move the focus to the appropriate
box) and then powering off the computer.

Not very satisfactory.

Subject: Tori and friends

You may remember that last summer a friend of mine bought a ’59 Singer Gazelle
and I helped her getting running well enough to take it to a local British Car
show, and then towed it down to her place in Watsonville. In the intervening
time Tori has done a lot of work on the car, including body work (with a little
help) and repainting (her first paint job). The car isn’t likely to win the
Concourse at Pebble Beach, but it’s still an impressive achievement. Damned
impressive in fact.

I was heading to a party about 20 minutes from her on Saturday and hadn’t seen
the car for several months so I stopped by to get some photos of it. She asked
me to take it for a short drive, during which the cable for the column shifter
came loose, so I manually moved it to have 3rd and 4th rather than 1st and 2nd,
drove back, fixed it, and suggested that for the next round of photos she
replace her gimme cap with some sort of scarf. She went one better and put on
a bit of a pinup costume.

The full sunlight was a bit of a challenge, but we did have some pretty clouds
in the background.

For those that just want one photo:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/52111568366/in/album-72177720299395937/

For those that want the full set:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720299395937

You may note that some of the photos are not of a ’59 Gazelle, but of a ’38
Minx. The person that sold the Gazelle to ths car lot she bought it from is a
bit of a Rootes group fanatic. I had first heard of Doug when I was working
with his brother Mike, about 20 years ago, and Mike mentioned that Doug had
“Tigerized” a Hillman Husky. An idea that had crossed my mind on more than one
occasion when I was driving a girlfriend’s husky back in college.

Tori connected with Doug, a very handy resource because he had done a lot of
mechanical restoration on Nigel (the Gazelle). It turned out that Doug had a
’38 Minx sitting around, but not the resources to fix it up, along with all of
his other projects. That is going to be Tori’s next project.

For reference, the “before” photos of Nigel, when we were fixing it up at my
house:

Our photo class visited Laurel Hill Cemetery last week. It was founded in 1836
on the outer fringe of Philadelphia, but of course it
has been engulfed by the city over the decades.

In front of the administration building is this antique Pontiac hearse, which
attracted photographic interest. Note the brackets
holding the wing mirrors.

RE: New Toys

2022-04-18 Thread jcoyle
Hi Alan - an A35? That was possibly the most uncool car of the era - but with
that motor it would have shocked many a boy racer! Mind you, that comes from
one who had a bog standard 850 Mini. At one time the speedo jammed at 80
mph(!) and I got stopped by the police for driving too slowly (guessing I was
doing roughly the 30mph speed limit): I was silently praying he wouldn't notice
the speedo reading.

Long ago, in Rhodesia, I had an A35 van (1000cc BMC engine, hot cam, twin
SU's) in BRG with a light grey roof. Then came the Mini's.

This is actually my fourth Miata/Eunos/Mx-5, but my first NB, the others were
all NAs. They have a reputation here of being a “woman’s car”. I’m fine with

In the motorsports community there is a saying “the answer is always miata”.
They are fun to drive, get decent gas mileage and are just a little bit more
reliable than an anvil. The best racing I have ever seen is in a class called
Spec Miata. In the last race I did with the SCCA, I qualified mid grid, a

qualifying times of four cars, or two rows of the grid.

Same for me Paul, but some time ago, when I passed 80, I cut back. Even on my
overseas trips I carry only one body, (K5ii), 16-45 and 50-200 zooms, and a
50mm Macro: together with a decent flash I feel I'm covered for my sort of
photography.
I have used a Nikon Coolpix with a 4.5-36mm, f3.7-6.6 lens and have been
satisfied with the results for walk-around shooting - and it has an amazing
battery life!

I never thought I’d say it, but at 74, I’m worn out. I don’t know how much
longer I can keep carrying big glass and a full frame camera on a walk through
the woods. Yes, my k-3 is lighter, but it’s still a lot of camera with a lens
that’s long enough to shoot wildlife.

Here’s the camera I want:

RE: PESOs (3) - Warm February Afternoon

2022-02-24 Thread jcoyle
Nice images, Rick.
WRT climate - that sort of warm winter day is not unprecedented. In 1965, I
was working for a shipping company that had one tanker for which we could not
find a new charter as she came to the end of the then current charter. Given
that she did not need a refit, it was decided to lay up the vessel at Falmouth,
in the south-west of England. So a colleague and I travelled down from London,
boarded the ship (while she was under way!), paid off the crew, and stayed on
board while she was taken up the River Fal to lay up at King Harry's Ferry. We
dined on board that night, on the foredeck, in February with a temperature,
although it was evening, of about 18C, and had a very pleasant meal!
It can happen!

RE: Pentax Spotting

2022-01-05 Thread jcoyle
I've told this story before: mine was an Asahi Pentax SV, bought for me by a
nurse travelling via Singapore while I was
living on St. Helena in 1968: the camera arrived about four months after she
left, due to there only being sea mail
service to the island!
It was stolen in 1975 in the East End of London, but I bought it's exact twin
in Adelaide about 15 years ago, and it
still works like new.

RE: OT: Dyspeptic Rant on Modern CD players

2021-12-15 Thread jcoyle
I'm with Rick on this: my CD player (which also handles USB sources) will show
videos and stills with an easy and informative display, is 35x18x3cm and sits
on the stack of other devices connected to my TV.
In any case, why should I be forced to spend either the time or the money in
converting these high quality sources, Deutsche Gramophon vinyl and CD's, into
another format which is just as likely to be replaced in the future by some
other whiz-kids brainchild?
I'm still mad at having to buy an external CD/DVD player to connect to my
latest generation PC: do the PC manufacturers think we have thrown away our
source software discs? I admit to being an old fart, but I still use Lotus
software written in 1990 when I need to have a secure file (on the grounds
no-one else nowadays would be able open it, even if they recognised the file
type).
And of course, how many backup files are no longer accessible because either
the creation or restore software exists (hello Microsoft), or the media is now
"obsolete"?

My collection is overwhelmingly classical, and consists of about 150 CDs and
twice that many LPs.

I have no desire to spend time ripping them to alternative methods of storage.

2021-12-12 Thread jcoyle
Hi Bob - the 1926 is one of the box type - as I said, unbranded but a search
for similar styles of box camera gave a couple of very close matches. I
suspect that there were multiple variations around the fittings to the standard
box due to supply issues or minor changes to them.

I just recalled I also have some Spotmatics, an ESII, a KMD and an ME, most of
which work.

Most of us are of an age when the cameras we bought new are now vintage…

What is your 1926 English camera?

Somewhere in the family we have my father’s camera which he bought used in 1956
for the Melbourne Olympics - it was twenty years old at the time. An Agfa of
some sort, very difficult to use. My oldest is a 1958 Leica M3. Not
particularly old by Leica standards. After that it’s the MX I bought new in
1979, which brings me back to the first sentence…

I'll start with a Rolleicord from 1955, a Fed 4L from 1969, and of course an

I doubt this little Fulvia Coupe will ever spend time on the roads of England
or Germany.

It was originally sold new in Los Angeles, California, during 1967; lived
around there until 2002. Something happened, its then owner took it apart about
1995, lost interest but kept it, and left it dismantled in the sun. It was sold
to the last owner, transported to and restored in the Chicago area. It was used
lightly there for the next 19 years, kept in a heated garage, and not used on
the road in rain very much, or winter at all.

I've now brought it back to California where it lives in a nice dry garage,
covered when not in use. It has no rust at all ... Most of the mechanicals and
cosmetics are in excellent shape: my shape up is basically catching up on
regular maintenance from years of light use and doing upgrades to things that
will make reliability a non-issue (like, a modern ignition system and modern
electric fuel pump…). What isn't in great shape will be soon.

Whatever the history of Lancia cars from then was… eh? It no longer matters.
Lancia itself disappeared into the maw of FIAT in 1968.

I don't need to drive very much anymore, and I have a modern car as well. I
walk and bicycle 90% of the time. This 1967 Lancia Fulvia Coupe is a Car Toy, a
thing to enjoy and smile about, study the engineering and history of, work on
when desired and/or needed, and drive when the conditions align. The Signora
Fulvia will be coddled and catered to for the remainder of my stewardship.
Concerns about long-term durability and daily-use reliability no longer apply.
LOL!

…Kinda like my 1939 Berning Robot II, 1953 Voigtländer Perkeo II, and 1954
Kodak Retina IIc cameras… ;)

The work on my 1967 Lancia Fulvia continues … I stopped by the shop on Thursday
morning and it was almost ready to come home. All of the items on my "get it
ready for driving" list but one had been completed, that one being fitting the
H4/H1 halogen headlamp upgrade units. So I snapped a few exposures with the
iPhone 11 Pro, using the Moment camera app, and asked them to call me if they
finished the work by end of day.

Fulvia, Almost Ready #1 :: https://flic.kr/p/2mQ4P5g Fulvia, Almost Ready #2 ::
https://flic.kr/p/2mQ6Tti Fulvia, Almost Ready #3 :: https://flic.kr/p/2mQ8aPt

Since I'm putting in the halogen headlamps, the driving lights seemed redundant
for the kind of driving and roads I'll use the Fulvia on, so I had the mechanic
remove them. To my eye, the front end looks cleaner without them.

As it turned out, the headlamps were fitted an hour or so later, so I caught a
ride to the shop and drove the car home. Ah, what fun!

There's more stuff to do, of course, it is a 50+ year old car… :D It's nice to
have it starting easily and running nicely now.

enjoy!

I will say that a major reason that my photography sucks a lot less than it
otherwise would have is the PDML, specifically reading people’s critique of
each others work the first few years that I was active on the list.

Having people who will tell you when your work sucks is very valuable, but not
nearly as valuable as having them tell you why, and how to make it suck less.

It's been a long time since I posted a GESO, though I am still shooting as much
as ever. So here is a small gallery of shots from southern Pennsylvania and
western Maryland, taken in late August:

https://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/cumberland-md-bedford-pa?blog=9

Almost everything was shot with an Mz-S and Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens and a
variety of film stocks, mostly outdated. The shots from Old Bedford Village
were made with a Sigma EX 70-200 f2.8 lens.

We were on a genealogical vacation and my wife was hunting for info on her
ancestors who lived in those parts long ago, so the trip was confined to small
towns, back roads, cemeteries and the boondocks...

One of my favourite areas - that's on the corner of Rue Poulbot and Rue
Norvins. Many years ago my wife and I walked along the Rue des Abbesses, in

over the hill behind Sacré-Coeur can also be interesting, as it seems quite
different to the touristy area of Montmartre. Paris rewards getting off the

Why we are not posting - WAS: November PUG is Up

2021-11-04 Thread jcoyle
Like many others it seems, the last two years have been a mix of Covid
restrictions and health problems - in mine, chemotherapy took me out of action
for six months this year, and I am only now beginning to carry a camera around
with me again when walking. Restrictions on travel have obviously reduced
photo opportunities, not just overseas but at home as well (and I've never had
much interest in still life and macro shots). Family photos I have also cut
back on, as no-one much is interested in prints any more, and digital images
get a "Thanks" and quickly are deleted, it seems.
While age is also a factor (I'm 82), apart from the chemo I am in pretty good
health, with no other major issues, so my sympathies got to fellow Pentaxians
such as Ann and Stan, who have far more day-to-day problems to cope with than I
do.
Hope to get more active this coming year,

Experimenting with shooting HP5 at ISO 100 ... Helpful when all you have in
stock is HP5 and you want to shoot in daylight with a shutter limited to 1/500
sec.

https://flic.kr/p/2mz9o3u :: Saturday Morning by the Cafe - San Jose 2021

Essentially, to get the slower speed with HP5, I dilute HC-110 concentrate to
1+61 and process otherwise my normal way. I usually use 1+49 for ISO 320-400.

Enjoy!

I tend to agree with Paul - I've used VueScan for donkey's years, on a number
of scanners, and still am not entirely comfortable with the interface. I
prefer to deal, for example, with dust spots post the scan, but VueScan has a
tool to do them during the scan: this often leads to a softer image than I
would want. The Epson software is good (Perfection V500 with all updates).

In my experience the Epson software is far superior to Vuescan on an Epson

true of earlier Epson flatbeds I own. I found it impossible to get good scans

RE: How do I correct an old image like this?

2021-10-01 Thread jcoyle
Hi Gonz - from your low-res Flickr image, I used the following process in PS:
Auto Tone
Auto Colour
Auto Contrast
Image Adjustments:
Brightness reduced
Contrast +10%
Shadows/Highlights:
Mid-Tones +15%

And then resized it to 300dpi
The result is at
www.epraxisdata.com/Img002_adjusted.jpg

not brilliant, but perhaps it would work better on a decent scan.

Scanned an old negative. Played around with the usual knobs, but cant seem to
get it to look decent. There is not
enough dynamic range here it seems. I've seen articles somewhere where they
make old photos like this pop out almost to
new. How does this work?

RE: GESO British car show

2021-09-28 Thread jcoyle
Great series of lovely classic cars, Larry. My favourites of the era were:
the E-type, of course
Triumph TR3's and 4's (didn't like the style of the later ones)
AH 3000 - any version

Funnily enough, I always liked the quirky little car marketed in the UK as the
Californian (L16454 in your set).
When I was in the RAF, I regularly hitch-hiked the 180 miles from camp to my
home on the south coast. The best trip ever was in a Jaguar XK140 from the
camp gates to South London - 110 miles - then a Rolls Royce (who cares which
model) driven by the owner, for once, from South London to my front door!
Never did as well as that again. By contrast, on another trip one leg was in a
Humber Snipe from the 1930's.

Sunday week we found out about the local british car show this last Sunday. We
got the car registered on Wednesday and discovered that it would make it about
two miles before over heating. We tried a couple of small repairs, but there
is no longer a local radiator shop where we can get it boiled out, so rather
than trying something ambitious and risking the car not running at all, we kind
of cheated, loaded the car into my trailer, drove to Boulder Creek early in the
morning, then drove two miles to a diner we like before meeting folks for the
show at 10. As we were about to leave, some folks were having a small reunion
and doing some sort of video about it and asked if they could use Nigel, the
Singer, in the video. Of course Tori said yes

We still got to the meeting point on time, I saw a couple of people I knew in
the parking lot. One was someone I had not yet met in person, but had seen him
driving past in his MGB while I was riding my bike around the block and found
him on facebook. The other was Larry, someone who had loaned me his trailer on
a couple of weekends something like 30 years ago, when I started racing. Larry
was driving a rather pretty Caterham 7. As it turns out Larry was parked next
to Larry in a Jaguar Mark 4, a few cars down from where Tori and I were parked.

It was an impressive show, we got the 49th spot out of 50 a couple days before
the show. One person substituted his 356 for a broken Triumph. Years ago,
there used to be a big Britcar show in Palo Alto the weekend after Labor day
which would get 300-500 cars, drawing people from all over this part of
California, so a little over 50 cars including a few that just showed up and
parked across the street for a fist try was pretty impressive.

With about fifty british cars, most over 40 years old in the show, a tow truck
did make a rescue on Sunday afternoon. A toyota corolla that broke down while
driving through Boulder Creek.

I tried to get photos of most of the cars, plus some of the other interesting
cars that drove or stopped by, so it’s a rather large gallery, 124 photos if
flickr cooperates. I just put the K-1 on Av, bracketing nominal and two stops
under as a safety.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157719972794900

Also a few silly shots at the Brookdale lodge of the folks using Nigel to shoot
the video of their reunion:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157719972549480

I apologize for the size of the galleries, the goal of them is to show off the
cars rather than my photographic skills.

Once the car is registered we need to take it someplace more scenic than my
front yard for some photos. Also, Tori wants
to do a photo shoot wearing something a bit nicer than scruffy work clothes.
Even so, I think this is a fun one. She
hated the faded blue top so she bought a bottle of black dye and that made a
big difference.

Help you did. In the file saving options, there is a check box for "save

I unchecked that, and life is back to normal.

OK, did some screen shots:

Here you can see the open file with the correct file name

And here, the drop down menu showing the Save As command that I am used

It's curious. As I mentioned, if I use the Export command, it works fine.

Just to let you know.

Sparked by the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma, South Africa
has descended into a near state of anarchy in several densely populated
areas no doubt orchestrated by Zuma supporters. The level of destruction
is very serious & will lead to many problems in the near future
especially the distribution of essential goods because delivery trucks
have been burned on the highways too.

The authorities have been slow to react but Taxi Associations &
vigilanties are fighting back to save their infrastructure from pillage.
The Police & Army have been overwhelmed.

Fortunately there are no problems in the Lowveld yet but roadblocks have
been set up on the main roads into Phalaborwa as a precaution after
intelligence suggested that hordes may be on their way.

Please look on the internet if you want more details & commentary.

I haven’t been very active for a while because I’ve been spending my time
trying to sort out a Lightroom problem (with 1 1/2 hours on a chat yesterday,
1/2 hour last week, and a several hours on the computer).

When I launch LR 10.3 (with photos stored on my own drives, not in Adobe’s
cloud), the catalog window says that I have 44,000 missing photos, and 94,000
photos overall. I actually have 50,000-ish actual photos, and a casual scan
doesn’t show any missing.’

So, two Adobe on-line techs and I have tried to figure this out. Yesterday the
tech came to the conclusion that my catalog must be corrupted. So today, I used
LR to open a backup of my catalog from just before the “missing photos” notice
appeared; LR still told me the same thing. The “missing photos” persisted even
when I opened catalog backups from 1 month, 3 months, and a year ago (at which
point some of the “missing photos” hadn’t been taken yet!).

At this point this is probably just a distracting annoyance, but it’s become
harder to trust LR with anything.

Ideas anyone?

I’ve done almost no shooting this month. It’s been hot and humid, the spring
flowers are fading, and the muse has been very quiet.

Looking back in Lightroom, a June photo-slump seems to be a pattern: In three
of the last five years, I have taken zero photos during June; in 2018 I shot an
ordination (otherwise no pix), and in 2015 I took on few pics on my way to and
from work on one day.

I’m looking forward to having the muse sing in me again.

RE: Recent departure(s) and my reflections on "online communities"

2021-05-27 Thread jcoyle
Stan, I think you summed up the Pentax list group in exactly the terms I would
use. There is a degree of camaraderie that I am not sure would be found always
even in a group which could meet physically, and that's a wondrous thing!
Like you, Jan and I on our travels have met up with Ann in New York, Larry and
John in San Francisco, Mark in Boston, a whole bunch including Christine in
Chicago, Dario in Ravenna, and all but one of our Australian members, current
or past at various times.
I note that normally, whenever one of our group has an issue, people do reach
out, as was done for me when my daughter -in-law died, then again when my
daughter died, but it does not always happen. I made note to myself to ensure
I do in future.

Subject: Recent departure(s) and my reflections on "online communities"

There was a bit of discussion (and consternation) here recently when one of the
longtime members of this group declared “I am outta here” or words to that
effect.

I copy/pasted much of the ensuing discussion and sent it on to the dear
departed (sorry, can’t resist using that phrase!) Just in case he had signed
off before the discussion occurred. And I asked “so, what’s up with you?”

In brief, the individual has understandably been under a bit of stress.
Spending long periods listening to warning sirens while huddled with your
family in bomb shelters can do that to you.

All of this got me to reflecting on this group. This is an interesting group. I
am not sure if I was the first to make this sort of move, but back at least 20
years ago I was at least one of the first to use the List to make connections
when I traveled. Frank and Dave and others in Toronto, including an evening at
a Blue Jays baseball game. Bob and Cotty and others in England. Gianfranco and
Dario and others in Italy: Venice, Rome, Naples,Ravenna… Lasse and others in
Sweden and Aland. Boris in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and Haifa. Henk and others in
Amsterdam and Amersfoort. Rob and a bunch of others in Sydney and Melbourne and
Adelaide. Jostein in Oslo (and Salisbury and Tenerife) and Paul and Bob in
Milwaukee. And Mark in Boston and of course the Chicago weekend organized by
Mark and Christine. And the Grandfather gatherings. And photo meetups for
weekends in D.C. And that is just me and off the top of my head. I can recall
hearing of many NYC meetups and others, often on occasion of visitors from
outside the U.S. passing through on business or vacation. Larry and John on the
West Coast, Ann and Dan on the East Coast have provided something of a nexus in
those regions.

An interesting group. Formed around a common interest in photography in
general, the proper and effective use of Pentax gear in particular. Not exactly
tight knit, but close enough that we can ask favors of one another, close
enough that we can (mostly) trust one another when buying/selling gear, close
enough that we can share our feeble attempts at artistry without fear of
ridicule and humiliation. Maybe close enough that we could reach out to someone
in difficulty and without feeling like an intrusive stranger? I do know that
there is no generic answer, we members are not all alike. But, for me, for some
of us, maybe, we could work a bit on thinking about reaching out to provide
comfort to one another occasionally? Just a thought.

And now back to my regularly scheduled attempt to get a decent shot of the
Oriole at the feeder…

Hey Ann - I resemble that remark! Bear in mind we had to climb four steep
flights in our own apartment as well as those
in yours when we came to see you!
Jan and I now rely on the two flights up or down to our garage for
stairs-oriented fitness, the main thrust is a daily

Good day to you wherever and whenever you are.

Good times were had aplenty in the past years, but no more. I no longer
feel welcome here, merely my presence is tolerated. It stands to good
reason, that at least half of what contributed to this is on me, as it
always takes two to tango.

I wish you all the best wherever your path takes you and I'd gladly

working on this for her portfolio. (She hopes to enroll in a major art school

I will introduce myself to the PDML. My name is Peter Stevens, my
location is in Newark, Delaware. I have been lurking on this list for
some time and finally made the jump to join in.

My camera of choice has always been a Pentax starting with a ME Super
followed by an MZ-S, a DS2, a K7 and aK3 II. I will admit to a Lens
Buying Addiction, there being no twelve step process for LBA other than
poverty. Any limitations to my photographic pursuits are of my own and
not the photo equipment.

As for my photographic interests, I will photograph any thing and
immediately regret it 95% of the time. The other 4.9% i regret when I
look at them later.

My ability to write frequently needs the reader to guess my intent or
meaning, my brain to finger connection spotty at best. So any of my
emails should never be taken seriously.

You and me both Ralf! Just working through selling or giving away the last of
my mother's stuff, much of which is fetching zilch or a tenth of what my
parents paid for it. Also just sold all my D kit, enough, as the buyer said,
to set up a complete darkroom at his school for the kids, so I was happy enough
with that. Included two enlargers and three enlarging lenses, which together
cost more than I got for the lot. Selling has not been helped by COVID

Just posted a photo of my lab in 2001. That was before I got the Jobo
ATL2+ automatic film processor. Last film developed in 2009. Everything
with the exception of that processor is still there.

Plus, the room is now chock full with the belongings of my mother from
when we cleared out her flat after she moved into an old peoples' home.
Cutlery, china, all sorts of decorations. Too good to throw away, not
worth enough to be sold. :-/

RE: (or not OT:) process vs. outcome

2021-03-27 Thread jcoyle
At one time I was an apprentice with an aircraft manufacturer, and part of our
training was in the use of tools to make metal objects (I still have a set
square and a drill setting tool I made). Working to 1/4 inch precision would
have been far too generous when I was tasked with making a retort stand for the
test laboratory, so I slowed down and worked to probably a 1/64th degree. Lo
and behold, the stand stood and would hold retorts!
I think Stan has nailed it with regard to slow and steady, rather than the
opposite.
BTW, I was hopeless at woodwork at school - everything I tried was an
abomination!

There was a recent brief discussion here between Darren and PJ about the
benefits (or not) of AI advances which will, among other things, provide far
greater accuracy in camera’s autofocusing systems.

The topic got me to thinking about two woodworking classes I took a few decades
ago. The first was a two-semester, 32 week class on the use of shop tools for
woodworking. Taught in a local (Northern Virginia) high school Shop class
facility by the local high school Shop instructor, we spent 3-4 hours one
evening each week learning how to safely and efficiently use circular saws,
table saws, jointers, planers, drill press, sanders, routers, etc. Each class
started with the guy's about 30 minutes of lecture/demonstration for the 8-10
of us in the class, and then the rest of our time was working on our own
project(s) with observation, oversight, and occasional intervention by the
instructor as needed. Before that class, I acted as though the little lines on
the tape measure were primarily for decoration, filling in space between the
bigger marks at the 1/2” and 1” markers. By the end of the class I had learned
that 1/4” precision in measurement and sawing/planing was usually just about
good enough but finer was better.

The following year, through a different Adult Ed system, I took a class in the
use of hand tools. This one was taught in a guy's workshop basement on the
Maryland side of D.C. The guy taught, demonstrated, and let the 5-6 of us
practice with his tools. I learned that it was possible to work to 1/64”
precision, but 1/128” was better if one was going to handcraft a wooden jewelry
box or the like. A huge part of the difference was learning how to use good
quality hand tools, being careful, slow, deliberate, thoughtful… I never did
build a jewelry box but sometimes I look at the dining table I built with power
tools to 1/8” or 1/16” precision, and I think what an interesting challenge it
would have been to do that table more slowly, deliberately, thoughtfully…

I find a real pleasure in using good tools. Somebody with an iPhone or Canon
might be able to fire off 10-15 shots while I am slowly carefully thoughtfully
manually focusing my oh so primitive Pentax lenses, but the process itself is
intrinsically satisfying to me. Maybe I could get the same outcome some other
faster more mechanized way, but I would miss the pleasure of working with fine
tools.

RE: OT a bit of personal news

2021-03-26 Thread jcoyle
Jan and I are so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother, Larry, but, as with
mine last year, when the time comes it can be something of a relief. The grief
will last a while, but will fade.
As to the rest of your news, sounds almost like a clean start for you - which
can sometimes be a really good thing. Good luck with the job search, it's not
easy at 60!

Subject: OT a bit of personal news

The good news is that I’ll be driving up to the Oregon coast tomorrow, a place
that I’ve found very rich in photographic opportunities.

The fraught news is that I’m doing so to bury my mother who passed away this
morning. She was 90 years old, and over the past few years there was less and
less of her there. In short she had a critical case of time to go. My
emotions are a mixture of pain and relief, but I’ve basically said goodbye for
the last time every time I’ve seen her for the past four years.

I also got fired today. I’ve been hating my job more every day for a while
now, so this also isn’t entirely bad news. Finances may get a bit tricky for a
bit, but with luck I’ll be able to get a new job that is actually in my career.
Even light construction is nowhere near as much fun at 60 as framing houses
was when I was 20.

One bit of unequivocal good news, my Pentax 18-270 lens arrived today. It’s
been a bit awkward carrying both the 16-50 and the 55-300 on my bike, plus I’d
invariably have the wrong lens mounted for whatever photo presented itself. A
few days ago I found it on Ebay for $200 and I decided that buying it would be
one of my better mistakes this week. We’ll see how the IQ works out. If it is
as good as my Tamron 18-250 was it should definitely be adequate. I do wish it
were weather sealed, but I’m less likely to ride my bike in the rain.

RE: for discussion

2021-03-23 Thread jcoyle
Very occasionally I have seen a potential photo, and have then gone out
specifically to try to capture it.
More often, by usually carrying a camera with me, serendipity gives me
something worth at least a shot, if not a more
serious attempt at catching a really good photo - and sometimes I'm up to the
job!

My philosophical question of the year, do we go and look for a photo or
does the photo look for us.??
