Sadly, we don't have hundred pound notes. Probably soon...

And our money is plastic these days. I've never actually tried but I suspect
that it will not tear as easily as paper and, with wet hands, will be
impossible to rip. And you know what they say about taking scissors into the
shower.

Re: Problems reading SD cards

2024-02-25 Thread mike wilson
Not wishing to teach granny how to suck eggs but you could set your old hard
drive as the C: drive by installing it where the existing new drive plugs in.
The new drive can then be plugged in and act as an internal storage (usually
D:) drive. Swap as much data as possible from the old drive to the new and you
should have enough space for a reinstall of W7, PS6 or whatever route you
choose.

Transfer the guts of the new machine to the case of the old. You should be

Unlikely to be the cards if you are getting exactly the same error on all
three. My default position is to blame Adobe, which seems to have a more than
50% success rate. For hardware problems, I would look at the card reader.

Re: Another lightroom redo

I don't disagree with the overspiced evaluation but the other doesn't even have
salt and pepper. Definitely more on the foreground but not so much as the
before image, which does seem to have an artefact at the junction of land and
sky. The sky is possibly better in the new version (in that it is more
realistic - I don't know, as I was not there) but that is arguably a matter of
taste.

Re: Let's test the list!

2023-12-09 Thread mike wilson
Not horrendously expensive here, as long as your consumer unit (fusebox) has
room for it. Cartridge types (a base that fits the rail in the unit with a
replaceable active part) vary from about £30 to £150. No more than an hour's
work for the sparky to fit it. Using surge protector plugs on everything would
easily cost us that.

"Don't know about B film. Perth is amazingly unphotogenic. It is not a city
of great character or charisma. Fremantle is way more interesting, and perhaps
it qualifies, seeing that it is more or less attached to Perth. There is an
amazing lack of interesting architecture in Perth. Fremantle has the convict
era stuff which has merit. I can't think of any particular advice I could offer
anyone, but am happy if you want to put your friend in touch.

Somewhere back in the Tag thread I may have put up some pics of the old railway
workshops and brickworks, all of which are being preserved. I find "industrial
archeology" to be of photogenic significance, but with almost everything being
less than 200 years old, there's not a lot of choice. There's an awful lot of
concrete and corrugated iron here, and some bizarre recent modernistic
footbridges and stadiums that attract attention by controversy rather than
merit."

Like the man in orthopaedic shoes, I stand corrected. But no fair modifying a
23 with most of the bits of a 27 and still calling it a 23.

Two ways On the 23, there is a vertical fin under the fuselage at the tail.
Not visible in your pic. The elevator surfaces extend beyond the jet pipe on
the 27, which does seem to be the case. There is also a slight difference in
the air intakes, not discernable here. Otherwise, they are almost identical
externally.

Re: PDML-UK Part 2

2023-05-20 Thread mike wilson
An excellent morning indeed. Good company, good weather and unlimited and
unexpurgated bitching. What more could a chap want? Although I don't remember
it was Doug we were calling a bastard...

Well done on finishing what is a tough route at the best of times. About 20
years ago, a Russian friend turned up to do about 12 miles of it wearing a
blazer, slacks and ordinary shoes. Because the weather was good and he was
used to walking in the taiga, real hard going. Then the weather turned
argumentative. Luckily I had foreseen this possibility from previous
conversations, so I had brought extra suitable clothing. He still looked like a
drowned rat at the end.

Schlumbergera is a genus of succulent that is, generally, split into two groups
for the purposes of domestic house pants. Those generally descendants of the
species truncata have yellow pollen, stem segments with pointy edges and flower
earlier. Those based on the species russelliana have pink pollen and stems
with rounded edges. I list them in the general timings of their flowering.
It's not possible to be very precise about all of this because the damned
things hybridise as vigorously as orchids, pigeons and doves and all the other
organisms famous for the practice.

Flowering is triggered by day length. They need a solid 12 hours a day without
light over two weeks at reasonable (16-20degrees C) temperature to cause buds
to form. Once formed they are prone to dropping if disturbed.

If they get too much light the stems turn bright red.

In a previous life, I grew greenhouses full of these things and had to get them
ready for market at Christmas time. The best way to trigger flower budding was
to cover them with black plastic bags about a week before you wanted them to
start. For some reason, nobody wanted to buy them like that. As mentioned,
there was no point in selling them once budding had begun, as they would all
fall off on the way home or shortly after.

Re: PESO: European brook lamprey

2023-03-20 Thread mike wilson
Lampreys are fascinating organisms. Apart from being (afaik) the only
four-eyed vertebrate, their body chemistry provides rich hunting grounds for
pharmaceutics. Some are anadromous, some are not; some have a parasitic phase
of their life cycle, some do not.

As a child, I remember seeing "fields" of brook lampreys in streams, only the
upper parts of their bodies out of the gravel as they hunted passing
invertebrates in the current.

Used as a meat substitute here during Lent, due to the non-fishy taste of the
flesh, they were usually eaten in pies.

If I remember correctly, there was a Roman governor who enjoyed executing
people by having them thrown into his lamprey pool.

One sending from Rick; same message ID for both. But by the time they leave
smpclient.apple, the ESMTPSA IDs are different. There's a sequence of numbers
at the end of the latter ID which go 12.2023.03.06.11.34.18 That is clearly a
timestamp. On the other, it goes 120.2023.03.06.11.34.19 There is then a one
second difference for the rest of the route until they arrive at me, when they
are back in time.

Cricket's easy.

You have two sides; one out in the field and one in.

Each man that's in the side that's in goes out and, when he's out, he comes in
and the next man goes out to be in until he's out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in
goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out and, when
he is out, he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when
the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have got out and both sides have
been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out,
that is the end of the game.

Much simpler than American handegg.

Well, most of those are utterly dreadful. And having been to Plitvice Lakes
National Park, I have to say that the image bears no resemblance whatsoever to
the place I was at. I would also say it would be quite difficult to take a bad
unmodified image of the place. It is that scenic. Have a look at the Wiki

decade. The Stallone one was dead on.
