Larry, if you watch the WildEarth channel you will see plenty of that.
Man is just as bad but nowadays the prey animals & birds are (hopefully)
killed in a more civilized fashion. I wonder how many people realise

Haven't heard them complaining about the Lions or Orcas yet!

Rick

Thanks for your comments. We spent a W/E at a rustic lodge in the area.
Unfortunately it was very hot (over 40°C every day) - thank goodness for
aircons!

The back lighting & glare was terrible. That's about as good as I could
get. Also, the shutter speed was a bit slow (1/1000) for H/H at 500mm.

Lake Panic is an impoundment on a tributary of the Sabi River which runs
past the Skukuza Camp. The bird hide is on a bend in the upper reaches -
a Mecca for bird photographers who sit there in numbers for the whole
day with their long lenses. Various animals appear on the banks too. Not
my scene at all - we just paid a short visit.

Re: PESO: porcelain fungus

2023-11-15 Thread Henk Terhell
Thanks Larry and Paul.
Larry, I used a pocket flashlight above the mushrooms. Part of the light on
the edges is already shown on the raw pics which are in focus.
Final sharpening amplifies this edge effect I guess.
In focus stacking I introduced some ghosting effect (my enemy) that I have
to remove in photoshop or affinity photo but it is a precise job.
The surface in these woods is of course not at all solid so touching the
camera on tripod to change focus may introduce movement.
The remote control is useful though.
The K-1 with its tilted screen is a fine camera for this work but the lack
of built in focus stack is a great handicap.

Re: PESO: mushroom time!

2023-10-17 Thread Henk Terhell
Thanks all for your nice comments.
Ann, I never pick any of the mushrooms as I've not been educated or trained
to do this, though I recognize some of the most common ones.
And in the store you can buy (without risk) cultivated mushrooms for little
money.
By the way, I wish Pentax cameras had a focus stack feature as I have to
manually change focus for stacking with the risk of a change in camera
position.
Usually I put my camera on a plate on which an Arca Swiss clamp is mounted,
to get lower than a tripod with a ballhead.

LOL! I certainly *own* more than one camera and one lens. That said, I usually
don't *carry* more than one camera and one lens at a time.

On a trip, I usually carry two-three lenses… or a zoom… and end up using one
focal length more than 90% of the time. :)

Re: PESO 2023 - 261 - GDG

2023-10-01 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thanks Ann! :D

Yes, the gentleman on the right did get his order… his expressions were more
the result of the conversation he was having with the unseen person further to
the right … his spouse or girlfriend, I couldn't tell.

My Saturday morning walking group gathers there for breakfast, and I'm usually
the first there because i'm on the bicycle, so I nab the one large table and
wait for them most times. :D They showed up and filled the table about five
minutes after I made this photo.

The sparseness of the cafe plus the way the Lomo lens rendered the scene and
colors, together, is what tickled me. It's an interesting lens to work with: it
records light and color in a way that I find appealing for some subjects.
