One of Dan's historical photos prompted me to post this link. DNA tests on deceased Quaggas has shown that it was in fact a recessive form of Burchell's Zebra which occurred mostly in the Cape. Selective breeding in closed herds has "resurrected" the Quagga. Similar projects have greatly increased the numbers of White Lions & King Cheetahs which are merely recessive genetic colour variants.
