Thanks very much for the replies. It seems that some smallish charge might be warranted. I think we try to negotiate over the phone - it's nice to get the exposure in the encyclopedia and don't want to jeopardise this by pricing ourselves too highly. I guess they may be paying other photographers

I usually allow free usage for non-profit organizations (assuming I agree with their cause.) I figure I also volunteer my time to local ones and make monetary donations, so why not donate photos. My philosophy is that if they are making money off the shot I should get a cut, but if it is just

Alastair - maybe check out what some stock agencies would charge in your area and then charge half that (if you were in a stock agency you would be apt to get 50% only) That would be a fair amount and you wouldn't be gouging them - but you certainly should get paid... sometimes those images
