Painted ladies are frustrating photographic  subjects.  The underside of
the wings are rather dull, while the upper surfaces much more interesting
and colorful.  Rxcept in flight, they almost always keep their wings
folded, even while feeding. Even when they do open their wings while on the
ground or a branch, it is only for a brief "twitch," making it almost
impossible to get a good image of the upper wing surface.  Swallowtails and
even Monarchs are more cooperative in this regard, although never easy.
